Something for everyone 12/3/2011

Coker UMC is welcoming to all types of families and people. In response to the review that the church is conservative, San Antonio as a whole tends to be somewhat conservative, so there is a conservative element to the church. However, as a liberal member of the church (both in theology and politics) I feel welcome and included at Coker and have many like minded friends at the church. Coker is absolutely great for families. We joined when our first child was a baby. Coker has wonderful nursery facilities, so parents can enjoy Sunday school and the services. There are adult Sunday school groups for all types of interests, from young couples to older traditionals to classes interested in social justice and if one doesn't find a class that fits their needs, they can start one. As children get a little older, there is Sunday school for children, children's church as a part of the service, and as the children get older, great confirmation, middle school and high school ministries. The newest building on campus is devoted to the youth ministry programs, which shows how committed Coker is to its youth. Coker also has a great preschool/Mothers' Day Out program for children from approximately 1-5 years old. Coker has a beautiful traditional Sanctuary for traditional services, but also has a contemporary music filled "Celebrate!" service in a more modern setting. Coker also has a great preschool program for children from approximately 1-5 years old. In recent years, Coker also started a Food Pantry to serve the community. That effort has gone from a small effort to a large and permanent part of Cokers' Ministry. Several years ago Coker UMC changed its Mission Statement from "To Create Disciples, Rooted and Growning in Christ" to "Love God--Serve Others--Change the World" and I feel that Coker is sincerely trying to reach outside itself and into the community to achieve these goals. more

Coker UMC is one of the most conservative UMCs in San Antonio. Yes, the church is very welcoming and loving. The ministers are approachable. But if you are not a conservative Methodist, try other UMCs - they may be more your style. more
