A quality little place 12/28/2010

From what I hear, this is one of Portland's more popular independent coffee shops. There is a gap under the door, so it's a little drafty, and the chairs are obnoxiously uncomfortable, but the employees are great and know what they are doing. The owner (one of the owners?) even won the Coffee Fest New World Latte Art Competition. Yeah, kind of a big deal. They also have free drinks and a potluck on Thanksgiving. There is granola and a few types of large pastries in big jars on the counter. Stumptown supplies the beans, and the tea comes from a company called Steven Smith. And just when you thought this shop couldn't be any more cool, they have a subscription to Onion World magazine (it's true, check the bathroom). more

Editorial
  • Handsome folk dressed in turn-of-the-century “Newsies” chic brew single-cup drip, French press, and espresso drinks from rotating single origins, which are roasted daily on the city’s smallest roaster – so fresh grounds are never a concern. The owners and much of the crew also run Coffeehouse Northwest, which quickly gained a cultish following after it opened in 2006. Halfway between coffee cart and café, the walk-up stand makes up in style and content what it lacks in seating. Browse fresh flowers at Sammy’s or pop into Trader Joe’s while your coffee is lovingly prepared.
