Hip lunch spot 7/19/2010

Dropped by for a quick lunch and couldn't believe we stumbled on such a gem off the commercial drag of Thames street. Felt like we were in a retro jetsons like vibe with great music and surprisingly fresh food. \r We decided to eat at the communal table looking at the wall size images of Gidget like women in 50s bikinis and ordered the cod sandwich (can i just say thank you for not frying it) which came on a buttery brioche and superbly crispy shoestring fries. The steak and cheese wrap was made from hand sliced juicy prime beef. Our server Michelle was all smiles. We will be spreading \r Pros: Fresh fare, hip vibe more

My ""Go To"" Spot In Newport!! 7/19/2010

Though I now live out of state, I’m a local Newporter and Chrisitie’s has become my ""go to"" when I’m home to visit. It’s the perfect place to meet up with the girls for cocktails, take my mom out for lunch, or gather a group of friends for a dinner. The drinks are enormous and reasonably priced, the menu is eclectic enough that there is something for everyone (and the small plates let you sample and share!), and they have a HUGE center table that let’s you seat everyone in your party. Everyone I bring here is blown away by the décor and can’t believe that this place is in Newport. (I love the wall art) To me, Chrisitie’s is quirky, fresh and I’ve always had a great time. I’ve never had any service problems and in fact have had a couple occasions where the staff went out of their way to assist me, making me continually go back. I’ve worked in enough restaurants to know that food or ambience alone aren’t enough to make a place, it’s all about the staff. And they are great here! I was there this past weekend with one of my young niece’s who has food allergies and our server made the ordering easy and we were stress-free knowing that all our concerns were addressed. I’d recommend it as a great place to go for anyone looking to break away from run of the mill. Pros: Large Unique Drinks, Delicious Food, Decor Cons: I don't live closer for it to be my local... more

Perfect place for drinks/dinner/dancing! 7/16/2010

For after-dinner drinks that turn into dinner that turns into a night of more drinks and (possibly) dancing, Christie's is my group's go-to. The bartenders are friendly, fast, and know their way around a martini shaker. Appetizers are delicious (we like to order a bunch and share), and the menu overall is very fresh and urbane and unlike anything else here in Newport. Did I mention the weekend DJ (who plays all our requests) and the lounge with swinging chairs? Love. Pros: Terrific drinks, breezy vibe, 2-level outdoor seating more

Very cool vibe, yummy food and drinks! 7/16/2010

I loved this place! Coming from NYC to Newport, I was craving a spot just like Christie's. It has small town prices, with a big city feel. The decor is chic and modern (rare in Newport!), the food was so good (scallop dumplings and pepita salmon) and the drinks were awesome! The best part about this spot is their 20 person communal table! We had plenty of room and all of my friends visiting from out of town adored it! Pros: Eclectic food, friendly service, cool decor more

Easy, Comfortable, Delicious! 9/25/2008

I have been to Christie's New and Old, and while the new definitely has a different personality, this is a very refreshing change! The food is great (Meatloaf, Mac 'n Cheese, banana cream pie!), the service is relaxed and friendly and the beer list is fun and interesting (Stone smoked porter!). Highly reccomend for an easy, relaxed dinner. more

WORST Restaurant Ever 9/13/2008

We drove 3 hours to visit Newport but what a disgust! The first thing we did is to have lunch at this worst restaurant I've ever been. First - we waited for 40 minutes to be seated. Three groups who came after us were seated first; when asked why we don't have a table yet, the manager said: ""Oh, I thought you were six."" Wasn't that obvious that we were only 4. So finally we were seated. We asked for a high chair for the baby. The manager came and gave us something to sit on to reach the table; no high chair, no straps. She said: ""I hope this is good"". Can't she see that she needs something that has straps? She does not have a common sense. Next - it took another 30 minutes for someone to get the our orders. Other groups who were seated after us were already enjoying their meal. Next - the food was not great. The mussels was too salty. Next - we asked for the check - it took another 20 minutes to give it, no we have to remind them that we want to pay and that we need the check. They said they were too busy -- there were only a few people eating -- it was already 4PM. Too bad we started touring Newport with this experience. It is DEFINITELY NOT recommended. Cons: Nasty Manager - just worries about her looks more

What a fun place! 9/11/2008

I took my family to Christie's this past weekend. We sat on the deck and enjoyed a great meal. The lobster rolls and chowder were awesome! The service was friendly and prompt. My kids enjoyed the food so much that we went back for breakfast the next day! I am a ""local"" and will definitely be back! more

Pathetic attempt at being chic 8/25/2008

I went to Christie's today, Mon 8/25/08 to have an end of vacation breakfast and found that this place is definitely one of Newport's worst. The owners have made a very sorry attempt to upgrade the decor to something fashionable but it instead it looks like a knock off of something you may have found in Miami circa 1998. The tacky little hostess at the front was very rude and the petty manager only made the situation worse. With so many lovely restaurants in Newport, I recommend steering clear of this one. Cons: atrocious staff more

Abominable experience 8/4/2008

Went on a Sunday night with 6 adults and 1 child. We chose the place because everywhere else had a 45 minute wait and we wanted to get the little one some food soon. \r \r The restaurant was rather empty (this should have been a sign) and they managed to seat us promptly. But NOTHING went well after that. The waiter was congenial, but slow. Took 25 minutes to get our drink orders (mostly soda). Took an hour to get our appetizers out. We complained to the waiter and the manager, and it was still absurdly slow.\r \r They said the kitchen was backed up. I walked past the kitchen (which you must do to go to the bathrooms) and it wasn't busy. Hard to believe they had any orders at all. The place was about 20% of capacity.\r \r The apps were so-so. The fried mozzarella was bland and lacking any seasoning, a complete failure. We had vegetable samosas which were pretty good. They didn't even start the apps until we had been there for an hour.\r \r Some of the entrees our table had... Fish & chips, which was revoltingly greasy, thick batter completely overpowering the fish. The chips (fries) were thin and again, incredibly greasy. Had to ask 3 times for tartar sauce. Burgers, ordered medium, served charred, completely inedible. You know it is bad when you take a fork to the burger and it thunks. Fried clams, which were a little bland, but could have been worse, and a roast chicken dish which was truly the only good thing at the meal. The kid's meal was unremarkable. Came with carrots and dip and we had to ask 3 times for the dip.\r \r As I said, the waiter was nice, but the manager was rather patronizing and arrogant. \r \r I wouldn't recommend this place at all. I can see why the place was empty. If we weren't so hugry and had we not had a toddler with us, we would've walked out despite their multiple promises that the food would be ""right out"". Bland food is bland food. No excuses. Pros: Nice locaion Cons: Food, service, seasoning, management more

Crowded, overpriced...the best bar in Newport 7/4/2005

I read what the other reviewer said about Christie's, and they're right. The food is nothing special, it is too expensive and they are understaffed. But you don't go to Christie's for an intimate meal with friends. You go for the atmosphere. You go to chill out on the dock and listen to the cover band play your favorite hair metal ballads. You go to show off your new summer wardrobe and the tan you worked on all day at Second Beach. You go to mix it up with the Newport co-eds and tell them outrageous and completely untrue stories just to see what you can get away with. There's no cover on Friday nights. What are you waiting for? Pros: The dock, The bands, 16oz cans of Bass Cons: sky high cover, $7 Crowns, Closes at 1 more

the worst 8/25/2003

i just spent a weekend in newport and decided to check out christies. the food was very bland and way overpriced, the atmosphere was as stale as a bad wedding reception (except with no music) and the service was the worst i have had in any restaurant in the northeast. overall a miserable experience and i regret not having checked out a restaurant with some personality. if you're in newport on a short trip, do yourself a favor and see what else the city has to offer. this is abolutely not worth it. Pros: i'm still alive, bread was decent, i had good company Cons: overpriced, terrible atmosphere, bland food more
