Back to SchoolFounded in 1926, China Institute is the nation's oldest organization devoted to educating Americans about Chinese history and culture. Among the panoply of offerings are calligraphy and painting classes; the Mandarin language course is one of the most popular. If you're more culinary than lingual, you can study authentic Chinese cooking. Or if you've been eyeing fares to Beijing, take a course on travel in China.Uptown's ChinatownDistinguished speakers give regular lectures on historical and contemporary subjects, while the intimate two-room gallery hosts rotating Chinese art exhibits. Once a year, the Institute closes off the block to traffic and rings in the Chinese New Year with its annual lion dance. As for other parts of the city, guided walking tours of Chinatown are given when the weather is nice.
