Charter One Bank is the 3rd bank my husband and I have gone through since moving here about 3 years ago. I will say that it's the longest we've stayed with a bank since then..
Generally speaking, it's a good bank. Free checking, free online bill pay, free checks, free everything, pretty much. I even opened up a savings account for a penny (since I already had a checking account), which sounds virtually unheard of.
Problem is, as nice as everybody is when you go to the store to see them (as this bank only operates out of grocery stores and Walmart), they're pretty typical for a bank in that they like to leave out pretty pertinant information.
The biggest problem- when we signed up for our account, the lady told us that she doesn't like to use her bank card as a debit card- in other words, she doesn't like to use the pin. She'd rather sign and go. Now, what she failed to mention is that every time you use your card with the pin at let's say Kroger, they charge you $1. You can see how failing to mention something like that to people who regularly use their pin number, can cause an expensive problem. We found out after we got a $10 fee on our statement, due to my husband using his debit card 10 times. This fee seems completely rediculous to begin with, but they should have told us about it up front. Not waited for us to screw up (for lack of knowledge) and hand over our money to them.
