Los Gatos' Least Classy Joint 8/2/2010

I would recommend this low life dive to anyone with an urge to quit drinking or a future in the online dating game... the only bar worse than Mountain Charley's in Los Gatos is 1080, which is conveniently located in the adjacent hole. The bouncers are arguably retarded... and i say that with all do respect to those who are mentally handicapped. The bartenders couldnt tend a fourth graders terrarium and there is roughly a 24-1 Male to Femail ratio in the place. This is however, the perfect place for someone who in some states needs to have a sign posted on their lawn or appears on some online list of offenders.... If you ever wind up here drunk on a saturday youre better off taking a cab home and watching bad television with your cat. Eff Mountain Charleys. more

Fun for the younger crowd 8/2/2010

Mountain Charley's is great for people who are recently old enough to drink. If you are over the age of 25 it is probably best to stay away from Mountain Charleys. The scene is pretty much always the same. There are a ton of guys at the bar at the beginning of the night lurking around the perimeter of the bar, which at first is a little bit creepy. As the place fills up with more women and couples the bar takes on a more normal vibe. The music is usually great and the drinks are strong. The bartenders generally tend to be cranky so bring your patience. more

the people 1/30/2010

It was a terrible experience... located in the classy and fine downtown Los Gatos but visited by people that are only looking for trouble instead of a great time... I have been there a couple times with the hope that I will have a good time! I live in the neighborhood and there isn't a lot of entreteinment options around here so if you don't want to drive far to go to a bar/club thats one place to go... but attending the place became a safety issue... once a flying glass almost hit me in the face coming from a fight that started right by where I was standing on the line to the lady's room, but for an inch it missed me and smashed in the wall and a bunch of glass flew everywhere... and yesterday when I was trying to celebrate my b-day I got hit in the head twice, again from a fight that started for no apparent reason... and the staff did absolutely nothing to control the situation and when I complained that I was hit they kicked me out of the place... I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE PLACE FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR A GREAT TIME..... BUIT IF YOU WANNA FIND TROUBLE IT IS THE RIGHT SPOT. BTW I chose one star because rating is required... I would've chosen none. Pros: none Cons: people, cover, drinks... more

Best Little Bar in the area!!! 9/21/2007

Mountain Charley's is a small western style bar in downtown Los Gatos. It's got a wonderful atmosphere and is a very relaxing bar with great music! The bartenders and other staff are very talkative and friendly. Drink prices are a lot lower than most other places. Beers are average at $4.50... Mixed drinks range around $5-$6. unless there is a drink special and they drop the price. Tuesday nights is Country Karaoke and there are a lot of very talented people that show for that night. It's a lot of fun. The place is under new owners and they are doing a great job with the place. There was no cover charge. It's got a nice dance floor too. Overall a great place to chill with friends!! Frequently promoted by the local KRTY country radio station. Pros: Great atmosphere, music, people...not too fast paced. Cons: could use a bigger dance floor...but it works. more

NEW OWNERSHIP 9/5/2007

Ever since the recent change of ownership Mt. Charlies is not the same. The drinks prices are now overpriced and the service is not the same it feels like they have begun to change the atmosphere. As a longtime regular I think I am going to find a new place to grab a drink. See for yourself but I highly recommend not wasting your time in a crowded place with over priced alcohol and bad service to boot. Just my opinion!!! more

Dont bring cash 7/20/2007

or if you do bring the exact change....this isn't the first time its happened. I thought it was a fluke or something but the second time around you know somethings up. And you'd think that at $10 at the door service would be exceptional or at the very least shady. Ive never known anyone to charge a whole $13.50 for a god damn beer. I guess business is falling so they need to rip off customers...that or the bartenders need to learn how to look at the bills....maybe take a basic math class along with it Pros: The girls that do go are good looking Cons: there arent very many more

Not as great as it thinks it is... 11/19/2006

Clearly Mountain Charley's has cornered the market on places with a dancefloor in the LG area, at least judging by the high prices and the crowd of people willing to pay them. An $8 cover to get into an overcrowded bar where I have to fight to get a drink and where people constantly shove into me when I'm trying to dance to mediocre DJ music? Hmmm. If you're in the mood for that sort of scene I suppose it's fun, and it's the kind of place filled with people from ages 21 to 51 so just about everyone fits in... Just go in knowing what to expect. Pros: always has a big crowd of party people, parking is usually easy Cons: expensive cover/ drinks for a divey bar, crowd can be overwhelming more

Stick Vacuum hose in pocket and set suction to Super High 11/7/2006

Ouch! The kids won't eat until next Tuesday after I visited this bar. Spendy Drinks!!! This place is an institution in Los Gatos but it is a little overrated. The door-persons think they are working at Hyde and can be a little tough to deal with. The bar gets super crowded and the one good thing is that the MILF count is uber-high. Did I mention that the drinks were spendy? Pros: Crowded Cons: Large Cover for a Bar, Spendy Drinks more

Take A Shot With the Bartenders! 8/13/2006

When I first started going to Charley's I thought it was overly-preppy, crowded, and too pricey. Now that I am older and wiser I have realized that it is one if not the best bar around in the south bay area. I'm 25 so I've been on the scene for 4 years now and it def beats hanging out amongst thugs in downtown San Jose. The bartenders at Charlies mainly Joe and Hans are always friendly and ready to make you the drink of your choice. Be nice and they'll take a shot with you. I saw a reviewer on here saying the bartenders were rude - that's probably because you were rude to them and maybe even stiffed them tip wise. Sure, the dance floor is way too crowded, the tables should be removed to make more room, but you won't find a chill place like this around anywhere else where if you squeeze yourself in tight enough, you can get your boogie on. My opinion is to go out for a night with your friends where you can kick back, have a drink, even a smoke, and have one of those memorable nights! more

Terrible! 6/9/2005

This place look about like a darkened pizza parlor. They play really cheesy bad music, the crowd is all desperate looking 30 somethings, the cover is too much, the drinks are overpriced bad pours, and the staff is RUDE. I reccomend staying far far away from this dive! Pros: none, none, none Cons: Rude Staff, Bad Music, Stingy Bartenders more

You can't go wrong 7/20/2003

Regardless of the night, I've always had a good time at Mountain Charley's. The drinks are good the atmosphere is chill and the bartenders are cute and friendly. Unlike Downtown San Jose venues that are thugged out, I can enjoy myself at Mountain Charley's with out having to worry about a fight breaking out. With the exception of the occational sour apple in the bunch (usually someone from San Jose) everyone is very nice and respectful. The earlier in the night you go, the older the crowd. However, once LG Bar and Grill closes (12:30) the place gets a little too packed so watch your toes. Overall, if you want to go to a low key local spot for drinks and dancing, you can't go wrong at Mountain Charley's... Pros: Friendly Bartenders, Stiff Drinks, Good Parking Cons: Crowded, Small Venue more

Fun Thursday nights with my friends! 7/7/2003

My girlfriends and I always go down to Mountain Charley's on Thursday nights. The DJ makes awesome mixes! We get to dance to all of our favorite new songs (50 Cent, Snoop, Dre) and old school classics (digital underground, beastie boys). There are a lot of people on the dance floor and in the club, but we still manage to find a nice, cozy spot to sit and catch up with eachother. I've met some really nice people in there. The atmosphere is fun and positive. The bartenders are quick and friendly. Overall, I love the place, the music, and the people, and I will continue to come down on Thursday nights at Mountain Charleys. Pros: Great DJ, Fun atmosphere, Cool people Cons: Too busy sometimes, Small bathrooms, Pricey drinks more

Its Los Gatos... 2/13/2003

My friends had hyped this bar up a few times so I decided to tag along on a Thursday night. Despite the stiff drinks and decent bar service, the DJ was playing CDs(not vinyl) ranging from "Ice, Ice Baby" to "Who Let the Dogs Out" and the crowd was eating it up. It was a fun crowd, but I couldn't believe how excited people got when MC Hammer came on. Its 2003... let it go! Pros: Busy, Stiff Drinks, Tons of Parking Cons: Terrible DJ, Cheesy Dance Crowd more

  • Charley's is a sexy, sophisticated, fun nightclub in the beautiful downtown Los Gatos. With a fabulous cocktail program, beautiful decor, and live entertainment, this hot spot is not to be missed...

Editorial
  • The Scene
Mountain Charley's serves up a hillbilly atmosphere for music-loving locals in their mid-30's who come to relax with a beer and take in a healthy dose of rock or blues. Once you find the stairs around back, grab a seat under the festive, orange party lights adorning countless hunts of the past, or saddle up to the dimly lit bar area. A creaky wooden stage provides the perfect backdrop for vintage tweed amplifiers and the guitarists that make them sing.

    The Draw
Once you've had a glimpse of namesake Charlie McKiernan's John Wayne-esque oil painting on the wall, it may be hard to go back to your regular neighborhood sports bar with the same amount of swagger. It's not a theme bar, but the grown-up penny-arcade atmosphere is great for groups to dance or just drink and be merry along with live music.
