This review is for the OB-GYN side of the practice.
When I was a student at UNC, I had gone to the hospital once, and given my parents' insurance card and mailing address. That was in 2002.
When I went here, in 2007, I had chosen them because I'm a UNC employee, and they're part of UNC Hospitals. Seemed simple. I presented them with MY insurance card (being long off my parents' coverage), and filled out the form with my address. They ask you to fill out a postcard with your address, as well, on which your lab results are delivered, so I did that as well.
Out of about 7-8 doctors' names on the door, a nurse actually performed my exam. She wasn't especially friendly, but she wasn't unfriendly. She asked if I wanted an STD test done, and I said no, I was sure I was fine. She said insurance would cover it, it wouldn't cost me anything, and it wouldn't hurt to be extra-sure, so I agreed. This was all well and good.
What wasn't good, though, was what happened after the appointment. Though I'd given them my updated insurance information, they attempted to bill my parents' insurance (five-year-old information!). I got a note in the mail from that company saying I wasn't covered, of course, and the practice billed me. So, I had to call to straighten that out. Then, the same thing happened with the lab work! They also tried to bill my parents' insurance, another letter was sent saying I wasn't covered, and the lab billed me. Straightening out the billing took two months - and I'd done everything right on my end!
The kicker for me, though, was the lab result postcard. Even though I'd dutifully filled out a card with my address, they filled out a new card with my parents' address, and mailed the results to them. There's absolutely nothing a 24-year-old woman likes more than having her (clean, thank you) STD test results sent to her parents.
I haven't been back, clearly. I don't have the time to waste straightening out their billing mistakes.
