Such a fun place to be! The reviewer below me is an idiot. This is an awesome place to see your favorite bands if you are ready to let loose and have a good time. The crowd will d...

They get great acts to play. No doubt. However, I've seen more than a few bands there and would prefer almost any venue to the Cradle. Bands are nearly always hours late start...

Great bands, cheap concerts! 4/16/2006

Cat's Cradle is a great venue if you're into non-mainstream music. Concert tickets are never over $20, usually $10-12, so it's really worth it seeing bands like Metric, Pinback, New Pornographers, as well as great local bands! Another great thing about it is the bar in the back so you can have drinks as you watch a show, and if you don't like the opening band, you can chill on the patio in the back! more

great venue 4/15/2006

I really like going to concerts at Cat's cradle. It can be a bit crowded at times when there's an especially big name playing, but most of the time, it's pretty nice. The bands that play there follow the spectrum of music - everything from country to indie to punk and ska. But best of all - it's smoke free! more

The best place to see live music 9/13/2005

have seen everyone from a Ska band to Edwin McCain play at the Cat's Cradle. You may even see some local talent. The crowd is generally laid back and music savvy. Get there early because parking is scarce. more

Small, but intimate! 9/6/2005

Cat’s Cradle is a great venue to catch a show at. Typically the marquee will list smaller indy bands, but there have been a few better-known musicians I have seen here as well. The actual establishment is rather small and can get pretty crowded, but it is non-smoking which makes the closeness more bearable. On the positive side you can get pretty close to the stage and it makes the whole show a lot more interactive. more

Cat's Cradle Rocks! 8/26/2005

I LOVE the Cat's Cradle! They've got a great variety of acts, from the super-indie, unknown, waiting-to-be-discovered groups, to the more mainstream. It's a small venue, so you always feel like you're right there in the front row (even when you're in the very back). Plus, it's non-smoking, which I REALLY appreciate. more

Neat! 8/18/2005

Cat's Cradle sees all kinds of indie type bands. Sometimes they get larger acts too. It's a great venue that recently went non-smoking; that makes it even better. It isn't too big, so you can get close to the bands - see them sweat or wink at you. Even if you don't want to be right next to the stage, you're still close. The sound quality is decent. Parking usually isn't too bad. more

Nice venue 8/16/2005

A very popular (smaller) venue for bands to swing by. They have a pretty good mix of tiny unknown indie bands as well as bigger more mainstream bands. The inside of the cradle is not huge, and depending on the crowd it can get quite hot and crowded. You always feel close to the action though. I would recommend keeping some distance from the speakers near the front--if you want to keep your hearing. more

this place ROCKS 8/16/2005

all kinds of indie bands, and some larger acts too, come to this great venue. went non-smoking about a year ago, and that is even better. not too big of a place, so you can get right up close to the bands, and if you don't want to be right near the stage, you're still close. good sound quality. don't know what else to say - make sure you see a show here if you're in the area. more

Venue for local and small bands 8/2/2005

We have been to Cat's Cradle only a handful of times but have been impressed. They almost always have good live shows and the cover varies with who's playing. On occasion they will have more well-known or established bands. Parking is a little bit of a problem but that's kinda the norm for chapel hill and carrboro. more

Makes all shows feel intimate 7/19/2005

Cat's Cradle plays host to a wide variety of musical acts all throughout the year. I have seen everyone from Edwin McCain to a completely obscure Indy Jazz fusion group there. The venue is large enough to hold a decent size group, but small enough so that all shows feel like you are watching with a hundred of your closest friends. Like most small music venues, it is smoky and loud, it is hard to find a seat sometimes, but all of that does not matter when the music is good and your friends are having a good time. more

  • In Short
It's not uncommon for hugely popular acts that usually play in area-sized venues to sneak in under assumed names to play for a smaller, hipper crowd. Bands from across the country don't have to be cajoled to play here--they ask to. Why? The crowd, usually made up of music-savvy clubgoers and Chapel Hill musicians, turns out in force for performances. And the schedule isn't limited to one genre. One night, a ska band might play, while the next night is a hip-hop act.
