Beautiful view of the city. I went last year for my girldfriend's birthday. The service was good enough that it didn't bother me too much but the food was great. We had a prawn appetizer that might be the best prawns I've ever had. We also both ordered steaks which were also very good. I plan on attending again. It is a little pricey but I believe it was under $200 for the two of us with a few drinks, 2 appetizers, and a dessert included on the bill. Definitely worth it. Pros: View, Steaks, Prawns more

Good intentions will only get you so far.. 2/13/2006

Having read the not-so-stellar reviews I decided that I would go with an open mind this Valentine's Day. We were quickly greeted and seated within 3 minutes by the window but the view was of the SF that wasn't on the tourist maps. The first two courses came without incident. That was short-lived. It had been 15 minutes since we finished with no waitstaff to check up on us. Our "to-go food was poorly wrapped. No foil swans, no imaginative doggie bag. The food was good but not worth the $89/person VDay. Although the waitstaff was attentive at the beginning and had the best of intentions, the lack of waitstaff during the rush of patrons during this very special of evenings coupled with overpriced food, and old style decor which really brought the feel of dining at a moderately rated hotel would not have me coming back again. more

Great view 11/22/2005

Definately has the view working in it's favor. We were stuck in the center of the room, so don't bother requesting a table by the window. They'll tell you all the tables have great views. The food was good, but overpriced, as was the alcohol. Worth it if you want to impress someone with a great view of the city. Pros: view more

I haven't ever had service this bad!!! 11/8/2005

After considering a lot of great places in the city to dine at, on my girlfriends last night in the city, I chose the Carnelian Room and not only wished I had stayed at home, but felt insulted. The could not or just plain wouldn't give descriptions and couldn't tell me what wines he had brought out to start with Upon recieving our entrees the backwaiter only really stopped to acknowledge me when I made it known that I didn't have silverware to eat with and which time he reached back behind him and took it off another table. I was enraged, none of the steps of service were followed and the only time the head waiter came to the table, when I requested the manager. At the end of night my girlfriend apologized about how bad everything was and I'm the one who made the reservation. DON'T GO THERE Pros: view Cons: everything else more

Stunning view, not the food! 10/16/2005

The view was breathtaking at 52nd floor, you can't beat that. It's very romantic setting, but the light was too bright, unless you get the window table where you can enjoy the view, other than that, you stuck in the center of the room, can't really enjoy the view. The food was ok. $42 steak, we can definitely get it somewhere else better. The flavor wasn't there. The clam & mussel we ordered wasn't hot anymore when we got it!!! The servers & host were very nice. They were very attentive & helpful. So if you care for the view, it's definitely a place to go. Pros: View, Service Cons: Food more

I had not been impressed with the Carnelian Room in the past, but was surprised by a recent experience! The restaurant has been completely renovated, and the menu revamped. The food was above expectations. I usually expect to take out of town guests for the view, but from now on the food is reason alone! Definitely recommend checking out the Carnelian Room if you have never been, or have not been since the updated look!! Pros: View, Updated Menu more

The grand dame of mediocre American fare... 6/17/2005

I'm sorry to say that this classic spot needs to be put out of its misery. The food, frankly, lacks inspiration...and what's that other word, oh yeah, taste. Bad food, coupled w/ waiters who literally tell you that they don't eat there, leads to an experience that is underwhelming to say the least. We went for Mother's Day...and boy was Mom disappointed in the result. I love the view, but this place needs to be overhauled ASAP! Please do us all this favor! Pros: view, ambience, location Cons: food, food, food more

Save your money 6/4/2005

The view is the best reason to dine here; but a table by the window isn't guaranteed. The food is overpriced, as is the alcohol. On busy nights, if your table isn't ready or you want to wait it out for a window table, you could be waiting in the lounge for 30 minutes or more. Save your money: come in for a drink, take in the view, then dine elsewhere. Pros: Spectacular view Cons: Pay for parking, Overpriced, Stuffy more
