Best

One of Portland's best. The type of place you will never be disappointed in the food. The cocktails were also perfect, my only complaint is that with the great food, and great win...

Elegant and Tasty 11/24/2005

I have dined at Carlyle three times now. On each occasion I have been very impressed with both the food and service. On my most recent visit I had the charcuterie plate (brilliant), the braised lamb (tender, moist, flaverful) and a very rich chocolate dessert of some sort (amazing presentation). I have had the same server on two occasions. He was quite knowledgable about the menu and the wine list. The ambiance is very inviting, and I have never felt rushed. I like the seating area immediately across from the bar. I think anyone that appreciates beautifully prepared food in a comfortable and stylish environment will enjoy Carlyle. Pros: attentive service, elegant food, cozy space more

Greg the bartender 7/15/2005

I was having a stressed out day last week when I stopped by Carlyle for a much needed cocktail. Bartender Greg immediatly handed me the cocktail menu and let me know the bar food was 1/2 off. I couldn't make up my mind so Greg made something just for me. It had mango tequila and he said it reminded him of his vacation. I said Carlyle was like being on vacation. Thanks for the much needed break, I'll be back. more

Terrific 7/13/2005

We were a little worried since their web site doesnt showcase any vegetarian options, so we called to see, and were assured that the chef would accomodate our needs. Did they ever!!! The whole experience was wonderful - the food, the service, the drinks were inventive and tasty... Just loved it - will definitely be going back... Pros: Easy to find parking, Great food, Great service Cons: Off the beaten path more

A wonderful discovery... 6/15/2005

Admittedly, when I read glowing press of a restaurant, I am usually dissappointed. This, however, was not the case at Carlyle. From the moment I walked in the door, I was impressed with the smart decor and savvy attention to detail. The food measured up to the decor and exceeded what were already high exprectations. The service equally measured up with intelligent suggestions from our server and superb execution; efficient yet friendly. I was impressed with the manager checking in with us after our entrees were presented. We had the Peking Duck (oh so good) and the Salmon (even better). Most impressive was the unique 'spin' on dishes with several culinary influences and stunning presentation. Carlyle 'gets it'. We will be returning to what has become our new favorite restaurant. Pros: Great food, Savvy Service, Great food Cons: Location more

Nice ambience but expensive and poor service 6/6/2005

If only the service measured up to the look it would be a fantastic place. The bar is nice but the service for food is very slow and the servers were not attentive. Went for lunch and just had sandwiches and it too over 40 minutes and was nothing special but the price was steep for what it was. Would recommend for cocktails but pass for dinner - the menu choices are very limited anyway. Pros: Decor , Bar, Parking Cons: Service, Price more

Perfect Evening 6/3/2005

I recently took a date to Carlyle. I was impressed with everything. We were seated promptly, and our waiter offered excellent suggestions for both our dinner and wine selections. The food was amazing; complex flavors and artfully presented. Although we didn't sit in the bar area, I would recommend it. It's a very cool space. The couple sitting behind us were oohing and ahhing about something they had ordered, which turned out to be a special that evening. They told us they were semi-regulars and proclaimed Carlyle thier favorite restaurant. They offered us a taste of the wine they had brought in, and suggested we make it a foursome next time. If Alan and Cindy are reading this, consider it a date! Darren. Pros: service, food, ambiance more

Great for lunch! 5/24/2005

I recently dropped by the Carlyle for lunch and found it to be an even better experience than dinner! The food was more reasonably priced and the service was excellent. Our waitor, I think Leah was her name, was personable and very knowledgeable. Definitely recommended for your next lunch date or business meeting. Pros: Service, Food, Lunch Prices more

Open on Monday 4/10/2005

Imagine our surprise to find Carlyle open on Monday! Newly open, I should say - - it was their first Monday open. It was early, the bar was already jumping ($1 Martinis might have had something to do with this), and bar menu was calling. Hamburgers, French Fries and Onion Rings like nowhere else in Portland (or anywhere else, for that matter - - and on a Monday)!. Yes, the food is wonderfully upscale and cosmopolitan and the place is opulently mellow and tasty, but Carlyle hamburgers and Martinis on a rainy Monday evening are just the best! Pros: Setting, Comfortable, Tasty more

Hidden Treasure 3/29/2005

I don't know how the owners came up with this location, but Carlyle is definately a find! The place is intimate and beautifully designed. My dinner was flawless. I had the the half-shell oysters, followed by duck confit, and ending with the warm chocolate souffle cake. We brought our own wine, but thier list had some terrific (and reasonable) selections. All in all a very special evening. My compliments. Pros: savvy decor, great food, excellent service Cons: odd location more

Thank you 2/25/2005

I am Carlyle regular. I often dine alone at the bar or join friends in the dining room for dinner. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the staff for always making me feel welcome. It never fails to impress me how cordial and accomodating everyone is. The food is consistently good and beautifully presented, and the drinks are masterfully prepared by whom I feel is the best bartender in town. Hats off to the Carlye crew! Pros: friendly service, excellent food, bartender more

who knew?? 12/25/2004

We live 5 minutes away from Carlyle and hadn't been there until last week with another couple. They are regulars and encouraged us to join them. It was a great evening. This restaurant is charming and elegant in an unstuffy sort of way. The food was delicious and although we seemed to wait awhile for our entrees, it didnt put a damper on the meal. We dine out frequently and found Carlyle to be exceptional on many levels. Pros: ambiance, cuisine, friendly service more

Best Kept Secret! 12/15/2004

Great getaway w/ another couple! I bit off the beaten ""scene"" path under the Freemont bridge makes this place a secret treasure. Best Venison we ever had and waiter Mike/Michael knew the menu as well ( or better) than the chef himself. He asked us what we liked and basically ordered for the 4 of us... it was all awesome! After sharing everyone's meal we argued which one was best... Brought a couple bottles of our cellar wines and they took care of things like real pros! Insisted on decanting the aged bottle and served w/ the correct glass type for each bottle. Simply put, they get it! T&S Pros: Great Food, Fun Experience, Hole in the wall plac more

Perfect! 11/13/2004

I loved the feel of this place. It reminded me of small eastside haunts in NY. We ate late and it was still quite busy (a rarity in PDX). Really tasty food, a spare but well-chosen wine list, solid cocktails, and a sassy server! Service was great. We didnt feel rushed at all. Highest praise! Pros: service, decor, food more

One word: ARANCINI!! 11/13/2004

Didn't have dinner but chowed through most of the bar menu. Arancini are these little nuggets of love...YUMMM. We like greg too! Ask for his special cocktail menu. Pros: cool atmosphere, food, bartender more

Not worth it 10/15/2004

Not nearly worth the price. Our waiter was decent, however he had no idea about the wines offered on what was already an unacceptably short and ill-chosen list. Furthermore, no one in the restaurant could answer a question we had about one of the bottles on the list, which honestly made me embarressed for the owners. The food was okay, but was about $10 overpriced. I would have been happy had the meal cost $50 for two of us, but at over $120 (when we brought our own wine) I left extremely disappointed. more

Mmmm steak..all I can see is wow 9/11/2004

Carylye was a pleasent evening to say the least; The tomato and mozarella salad was delicious; my husband ordered the steak and I regretted not ordering it as well; it was the best I've ever tasted! My dish (halibut) was good, but not exceptional and the olive tapenade was too strong for me. Our waiter was funny and honest about the selection, and the lemon brulle tart I had for dessert was also very good. My husband hates being dragged to ""gourmet"" restaurants, but he loved the steak and talked about going back. The food is better than City Grill, but almost equally pricey! Pros: Good Ambiance, Delicious cuisine, Helpful waitstaff Cons: , Expensive more

Portland: National Culinary Contender 9/8/2004

Portland is well on the way to national prominence with restaurants like the Carlyle added to it's list of other top notch eateries. I just could not find anything to be critical of...and what a gorgeous room! Boston could use a few Carlyle's. Starting with the maitre de, the service was consistently professional and friendly. The bartender, polite and clearly talented, described how several 'house infusion' cocktails were made and easily described the wines available by the glass. Every plate of food looked great and tasted even better - exceeding my expectations with every bite. I could go on...but this restaurant really gets it right - highly recommended. Pros: Service, Food, Value more

Worth the wait 8/22/2004

Our table wasnt ready when we arrived last friday night, and we were offered a seat at the bar. At first I was upset as we had made the reservation well in advance, however, atfer two very good martinis and a lovely conversation with the couple next to us, it was all uphill after that! Our dinner was superb. Our waiter was charming and well-informed, and his suggestions were right on the mark. The dining room was a bit noisy at times, but it's a lovely space; small yet very inviting. A little too pricey for me to be a regular, but I'm going to try anyway! Pros: Martinis, ambiance, excellent food Cons: , noisy at times more

Nice place, solid food, too expensive 8/16/2004

A nicely designed restaurant. Great, friendly service. Timing of courses and advice from waiter was fun. But, $30 for a good quality oregon steak and onion rings? It just seems a bit high considering the other options in town. Menu choices are somewhat limited and not very inventive. A great place to take a date or go for drinks at the bar. Pros: Nice bar, Trendy location Cons: , Expensive, Expensive more

good discovery 8/15/2004

I enjoyed this retaurant very much. Service was friendly and helpful. I liked the look and feel of this place. My date and I shared the chef's dinner. I cant remember all the stuff we ate but the starter was amazing and the main entree was also delicious. The crowd seemed older but it may be just that kind of place. I also liked the drinks. MY date had something with a rose petal in it. I had lunch here two days later. The grilled cheese and bacon sandwich is one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. I would recommend this restarant to anyone Pros: great service, cool look, tasty food more
