The ice tea tasted bad, there is well water in Florida City, tasted like well water, the lemon pepper grouper smelled bad when it was served, tasted it, not good. Ordered walnut crust with chutney, a fish dish, it was covered with a over powered sweet sauce, really it was a walnut chutney sauce, tasted like from a can. Could not taste the fish. I believe there really is no chef or at least a professional cook. The other fish we ordered was not cooked properly, The manager did try to make things better. She gave us a chocolate mouse cake to make things right, which was nice. The watered was nice, but no experience, I had to keep giving the old dishes from the table. She never said thanks, or goodbye, or a smile, basic customer service, took the payment, and tip and was gone. I have eaten there before and the food and service was much much better, it seems not the same people or management anymore. more

I'm a native South Floridian and have eaten a LOT of seafood but found the stone crabs at Captains to be very mediocre. They were definately frozen. If you want awesome stone crabs, hit Joe's on Miami Beach..... worth the drive and price! more

We have eaten at captains several times and would set inside and one night we had an old rude server named Bridget she gave us food we didn't order and when we brought it to her attention she argued with us telling us that's what we ordered she became rude and grabbed the plates off the table we also ask her for refills on on beverages she ignored that also but we we're approach by another server Ruth and she immediately apologize for Bridgets rudeness she refilled our beverages and after we received our food Ruth came by our table several times to make sure everything was okay and ask if we need anything she recommended we try the bread pudding and we did and it was excellent. When we paid the bill we left Bridget 10% and offered Ruth a tip and she declined she said she was just doing her job. I hope the owners relize how great of an employee Ruth is. Oh yeah as we walked out Bridget made a rude remark about her tip I quote 10% thanks for nothing an with a tip like that you don't have to come back.We will be back and I will request Ruth and if you want great food and great server request Ruth and you will have an enjoyable time. more

My wife and I drive past Captains Restaurant & Seafood every time we travel to the Florida Keys and we are native to South Florida We never stopped choosing to eat in Key Largo or Islamorada. After reading the reviews about the Macadamia nut Snapper and Stuffed grouper we decided it was time to try it out.\r The bad fishy smell outside when we arrived was over powering however, it was only outside. We were greeted by a lovely hostess with a wonderful smile and happy disposition. She made us feel welcome even though getting an inside table required a wait of maybe 10 minutes. \r The décor of the dining area was stuck in 1973. The atmosphere was lacking to say the least and it was not what we expected considering the prices they charge. The furniture belonged in a diner in central USA run by a guy named Johnny. You know the place with great coffee the locals love and the people working there love you. The people working at Captains Restaurant do the same. They were wonderful. \r The food on the other hand was not. The Macadamia nut snapper had the texture of a boiled fish, it was not flaky, the snapper was soggy. The stuffed grouper with crab meat was stuffed with artificial crab meat so we ordered the everglades snapper. Reading the menu made it sound wonderful, it couldn't miss. We are used to FRESH fish and even frozen once fish is acceptable. I do not know what they did to the snapper or if it really was snapper, but it was NOT good. Maybe it had been frozen a few times, I do not know why my meal was not good, however my sweet ice tea glass was empty only for a few seconds and the friendly service was very good. \r But AS TO THE FOOD, WE WILL NEVER EAT THERE AGAIN, NEVER! The food was way too expensive for what we received. There are many nicer restaurants nearby that are 50% cheaper, taste better and are cleaner. My wife commented that the carpet in the dining area looked like it should have been replace years ago, it was caked with dirt, but the service was good. \r When we received the bill, the tip was NOT included, but we tip 20% when the service is good. And again, we will never spend another penny there ever again. The local Ale house has better fish and Cracker barrel is around the corner and their fried catfish is half the cost of Captains Restaurant. Do the right thing and go somewhere else. more

We were a party of two people and ate here on two consecutive nights. The first night was fine and we left a 15% tip for the waitress. However on the second night we had a different waitress who added 18% to our bill. We queried this and she said it was because we were foreigners! We spoke to the manager who said that occasionally the tips left were poor but this is not our problem and we have always been happy to leave a tip of 15% wherever we eat in the States. This is discrimination and we feel foreigners eating at this restaurant are being taken advantage of. more

We stood by this place on our way back from the Keys. Amazingly this place had better seafoods than the restaurants in the Keys!\r \r It is literally on the way to the Keys. If you are going to drive down to the Keys, drop in this place to take a rest and a delicious lunch. more

On a recent visit to Florida City we ate here 4 straight times! The Fried Shrimp may be the best I've ever had! The Chocolate Mousse Cake dessert was great as well. My wife tried the Hogfish sandwich (new to us) & it was great! Service was quite good and the constantly refilled iced tea was welcome in the hot Keys. I'll definitely be back. more

Absolutely not our last. We just moved to the area and immediately found our new favorite place. Warm and welcoming, bright and cheerful, our server Becka made me feel right at home. The fish and shrimp dinners we chose were cooked perfectly. Crunchy cole slaw a great side. Looking forward to trying the hog fish and the lobster specials. more

I'm Italian and I eat twice in this restaurant. Great! The best seafood restaurant in my Florida days. Food very fresh and weel cooked. As Italian I think that if they cange from peanuts oil to olive oil to cook the dishes will be perfect! more

My wife an I enjoyed dinner at Captain's this weekend and we both were impressed with the quality of the food and the service provided. The fish could not have been any better. She had the Mahi sandwich and I had the Hog Snapper sandwich. The fish was as delicious and fresh as I think I have had anywhere in Homestead or in the Keys. You don't have to drive 25 to 50 miles for great fish, just stop by Captain's. more

After reading the reviews and hearing good comments from friends we checked out Captains Seafood. Waiter was very attentive ( always refilled my drink before it was halfway down) and had great suggestions, I got the macadamia nut snapper and it was awesome my boyfriend got the stuffed grouper with crab meat also dynamite... Got conch fritters and calamari both were yummy? The portions were a good size and I couldn't finish mine... Slightly pricey but well worth it more

All you can eat stonecrabs for $39 is a great deal. The almond crusted mahi is excellent. The jambalaya is great, very spicy. All the seafood dishes we have had on our many visits have been great and very fresh. Worth the drive. more

On our return trip from Key West, we dropped in to Captain's Restaurant and Seafood Market. My wife had the Almond Crusted Mahi ($18.95) and thoroughly enjoyed it. But I had the Most Excellent (5-star) Bread Pudding ($5.95) for dessert. We travel a great deal and I have to say it was the BEST bread pudding I have tasted. It is worth the trip to this establishment. Next time we come back to this area (we are from Michigan), we'll make a point to stop by again! more
