Best

Yum!! This place has some of the best prices and nicest staff around. Mandarin Noodle dish and fried shrimp--so good!

Worst

Canton has just gone down hill. Obvious low quality meats is the biggest bummer. Used to love the place and still think they have the best Pork Fried Rice and Crab Puffs. Any more...

Delicious and Affordable 11/29/2011

I hate to have just found this place now that we're moving. They keep the restaurant section open until after 11pm and the lounge/bar until 1:30am, but sometimes you have to deal with terrible drunk white guys singing karaoke in the lounge. For $12.05 we got an entire large meal and split it (#13 combo), complete with pork spare rib slices, pork fried rice, the best general tso's chicken I've had in quite some time (garlic-based, not spicy!), six small cups of hot tea, 'egg flower soup' which was basically chicken noodle soup without the noodles, with egg drop added, and orange sherbet for dessert. I'm only offering it 4 stars instead of 5 because I know their meat quality could be better, but overall it was a great late night meal and I'll probably be back in the next couple days, especially when two of us got out of there full for $15 with tip. I'd kill for this place to deliver. more

The Best that there is in Portland Oregon 4/2/2011

They have such good food here, when my sister comes to visit this is the first place she wants to go out to eat at. I hace a realitive sho has a heart problem and has to be on a low sodium diet. All you have to do is let the server know and they will cook your food with no sodium or MSG. Of course there is some exceptions like the fired shrimp - due to the batter that the use. more

not the worst but not good. 2/7/2011

Canton has just gone down hill. Obvious low quality meats is the biggest bummer. Used to love the place and still think they have the best Pork Fried Rice and Crab Puffs. Any more, it is a guerentee that you will get a nasty piece of chicken, and BBQ pork highly laced with fat. everything else is ok but nothing any better then other places. more

GREASY GREASY GREASY 2/4/2010

Upon walking in, the place leads me to expect to see regular, old fashioned alcoholics sitting at the bar drinking and smoking. The place is old and it smells that way. While the food was inexpensive, they didn't have much in the way of selection and it was all greasy! It left a sick feeling in my stomach. Pros: Price Cons: Greasy / Dingy looking place more

Yuck!!!!!! 10/26/2009

How could anyone recommend this place? The egg roll wrap was raw on the inside and very greasy . The shrimp fried rice had only a small amount of shrimp. The chicken egg foo young was strange tasting, like they had added a bunch of flour to it. They can't even get the condiments right. I asked for duck sauce and got catsup!. When I called them on it they told me that was their homemade duck sauce. This is a first...a chinese restaurant that serves catsup as duck sauce. Horrible, just horrible! Pros: attentive and nice employees Cons: THE FOOD !!!!!!!! more

BEST CHINESE IN TOWN 3/15/2009

This restaurant was my grandfather's favorite when he was a child, my father's favorite when he was a child, and has now been mine for the past 20+ years. My wife is pregnant and we are sure that our fourth generation will experience this incredible restaurant for years to come...if my wife doesn't eat them out of business in the next 8 months :). Great comfort food, fun Friday night outings, open late for the 'post-bar' stop. Only downfall is the part of town...it has become pretty sketchy... but it isn't the restaurants fault and you can't really expect them to move after 60+ years. Don't forget to rub Buddah's belly on the way out! Pros: Family owned for over 60 years, consistency, friendly staff Cons: Nada...except for being stuck in a bad part of PDX more

Wost Chinese Food In Portland!!!!!!!!!! 2/6/2009

Are you kidding me? This place is absolutely GROSS!!! Food is HORRIBLE!!! Run...Run far away from this Restaurant!! Pros: Everything but the food Cons: The food more

wonderful prices, service, atmosphere and food 10/23/2008

This restaurant has been around for years, and I know why. They have wonderful food, and they can make virtually anything with no msg or salt. I have a fairly large family, and they had no problem seating us in a minimal amount of time. I think my favorite thing on the menu is the curry rolls and general tso's chicken, I recommend trying them if you ever decide to visit. Pros: service, food, atmosphere Cons: no delivery more

Best American-Style Chinese Food...and Comfort Food 8/26/2007

To be perfectly fair, Canton Grill serves the best (IMHO) *American-Style* Chinese food. It's some of my Comfort Food. Pros: History, Comfort Food, Parking, Great Service Cons: I wish I could walk there!! more

Great!!! 5/23/2007

First, unlike a lot of other restaurants, Canton Grill recognizes those over 55 as being eligible for a ""senior"" discount (I'm 56). The service is friendly and fast and the food reminds me of what seems like days gone by ... when Chinese food tasted like the Chinese food I remember ... not corrupted by definitions or expectations of effete snobs who may ""specialize"" in a given cuisine (but not on MY taste buds). Pros: Ample parking, fast friendly service at reasonable prices. If you're 55, you get senior discount. Cons: None that I'm aware of. more

The tasty, late night alternative! 5/18/2007

When I get sick of all of the crappy fast food I eat this is my favorite alternative. Give me an order of fried rice and and fried shrimp with some hot yellow mustard and I am set! Great late night, just call ahead and pick it up 15 mins. later. Pros: open late and affordable Cons: they don't deliver more

Check it Out 5/14/2007

I have been going there for years. The food is great, a few dishes lack the authentic taste, but who cares about a few dishes? Do not even look at the American Menu, these people are authentic Chinese trying to cater to us, they don't do American food well. The service is usually good, however they do replace Waitress#1 quite often (I believe this position is the only one filled by non family/ someone who hasnt been there the last 5-15 years) and Waitress one causes the service to lack greatly. However, you can meet the owner any night of the week, friendly serivce, good food. Pros: Authentic friendly Atmosphere Cons: Karaoke Late Night Howling more

Great Egg Flower Soup.... 2/3/2007

But everything else was less than mediocre. Pros: Egg Flower Soup! Cons: Everything else. more

Poorly Made Americanized Chinese 11/2/2006

I visited the Canton Grill years ago before I discovered the out of this world Chinese at Wong's Garden on Woodstock. The food was nasty then and it's still nasty. I thought maybe over the past 14 years it could have changed..... not even! YUCK! Cons: everything more

All Wrong!! 7/8/2006

First off the service was good. The staff was friendly and we were promptly seated. Karaoke in the background was amusing. *sigh* But the food. The pork chow mein had little to do with pork or pan fried noodles (google image ""Chow mein"" and see what it's supposed to be Portland, for you have been lied to!), and more to do with celery and onion chunks piled high. A mound if you will. And the pork spare ribs.. should have been more appropriately named, ""Pork Spare Marrow."" A bowl of bones is unappetising to say the least. In fact, we had to use our soy sauce saucer as a designated bone recepticle with little ""meat"" left behind. Heed this warning: Avoid at all costs. Unless you like smokey Karaoke. In which case, drink but eat before you go. Pros: Background Karaoke, Good Staff Cons: Food. more

Excellent Chinese Food 6/28/2006

Canton Grill, on 82nd and SE Division is that little Chinese Food place that always delivers a quality meal for a competitive price. They have the very best Pork Fried Rice and BBQ Pork in town and I personally love their Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs. Pros: Fried Rice, Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs and the service Cons: Smoky bar, but what bar isn't smoky in Oregon? more
