Worst

Cameo was an old favorite. Emphasis on was. Today's experience was not good. The hostess turned into our waitress, and bumbled her way through it all. She didn't know how much...

However-Cameo West is Now Closed 12/29/2008

We had breakfast there once years ago and it was very good. Only problem is the place has been sold and is now closed. We checked it out. Just FYI! Cameo East is still open. more

Can't beat its breakfast 2/6/2008

My husband, son and I had breakfast there, and it was wonderful. I'm into healthy foods, my son is into eggs and hash, and my husband is into omelettes. We were all satisfied with our meal, had a great friendly service and they customized my omelette to my liking. more

Not good after changed owners 1/25/2008

After regularly visiting this restaurant for a few years, I have not been back for months. Once a delicious and fun place to eat, it now is not worth it. Much better options out there. more

Just plain terrible! 1/3/2008

I visited the Cameo Cafe on the weekend before Christmas with my husband. We were shopping in the area, and wanted to try Cameo because of all the good press we?ve read. What a disappointment! The service was spotty, our table was sticky and still covered in crumbs, and the food was awful. My omelet was an oily mess and the hash browns were still cold in the middle. My poor husband ordered the hash which turned out to taste like it was cooked while still in the can. The back porch area we were seated in was filthy. I'm talking visible clumps of dust/dirt mix on the floor and cobwebs all over the ceiling and in the corners. Pros: Lots of other people to share in your suffering Cons: service, food, etc... more

Bland 9/6/2007

This place is way too expensive for what you're getting. The last two times I was there for breakfast, I spent the whole meal drowning it in every condiment on the table. The food had no flavor AT ALL. I really don't understand why people give such grand reviews! I'll go to Byways or Paradox from now on. Pros: nice staff Cons: bland food, overpriced, choices are lame more

Great Omelette On A Monday Morning! 7/9/2007

My dad and I had a nice breakfast on this Monday morning at the Cameo. I have been here several times on weekend mornings and it was always busy. Great food each time and today was no exception. I'd say I had the best seafood omelette (they call it Fishermans omelette) I've ever had, no this was the best I ever had. Large chunks of Scallops and mushrooms, lots of Bay Shrimps and Oysters and great cheese not just rolled up in eggs but kind of just layed out there showing off all that seafood (good marketing I'd say). So the price was $16, so what! I wanted a great omelette and I got one. Don't get me wrong, The Cadillac and even John's Cafe in St. John's does good omelettes at their price range and could be an alternative at less prices, but today was special. Most people write negatives about a place and I'm no exception. I do have something to say and I hope the owner or manager will read this. The place needs a good cleaning and then keep it up. Today I ate on the main level during a nice sunny day outside and noticed dirt and cobwebs and dust all over the walls and pipes and ducting and everywhere. The floors, the nooks and crannies. I was eating my expensive delicious breakfast with my dad and noticed the filth. I do hope the owner or manager see this and will do something about the dirt. I will go back for breakfast again sometime and maybe even try lunch or dinner and this next time I will point this out if it is not corrected. more

How many stars?!! This system is rigged! 5/19/2007

There is no way taht the Cameo deseves this many stars. After a few attemtps to elt them redeem themselves I have fianlly blacklisted this place from places I will eat. If they didn't charge for such standard breakfast I might consider going back. But there is little difference in what is served here compared to wath is served at a pancake house on 82nd and at ahlf the price. The final straw for me was when I had ordered pancakes and bacon and ended up with eggs and french toast. When I told her I have the wrong order, she told me, ""No that is what you ordered."" I really don't like eggs by themselves and wouldn't order them. Despite explaining this to the server all I got back in response was a vacant stare. I would recomend this only if you plan and eating with someone you dislike. Pros: good location IF you get outdoor seating. Cons: Service on par with a prison cafeteria. more

Pancake heaven! 1/25/2007

Well I am sooo happy to have found this place! It is adorable! I am a pancake fanatic and this place knows how to serve them up right! They spill over the plate even!! I have been going as often as I can, and each time it keeps getting better and better. Pros: Wonderful service, excellent food and atmosphere Cons: Parking is a bit difficult more

I thought they were known for their breakfast, but... 7/28/2006

The coffee was bad, the cream (served in those little plastic cups with the peel off lid) curdled in my coffee, the menu was not the least bit adventurous and the basics were not well executed. I think $11.00 is a little spendy for 2 eggs, hasbrowns, bacon and toast. more

Don't eat here...its the worst. 7/8/2006

I never write reviews...but the experience was so bad, I had too. Pros: location Cons: bad food, expensive drinks, the building is falling apart more

Most forgetul Service 7/7/2006

We thought we'd give Cameo another try. The last one wasn't impressive. Breakfast. We sat ourside. The prices were a bit high..around $12 for an entree. Steep for Potland. I had the Corned beef and eggs with hashbrowns, Marianne had the 1/4 acre of blueberry pancakes. Both were good, though tne corned beef was mixed into the hash browns--I'd expected the corned beef hash would be separate. The forgot to ask if we wanted coffee, they forgot to offer half and half, they offered, when asked, only non-dairy creamer. The didn't offer catsup of tabasco, though delivered it if asked, as the did with milk for the coffee. The didn't bring syrup for the pancakes. Overall, expensive, bizarre service and just OK food. Other places are much better. Pros: Nice location Cons: Food just oK, prices high, service lacking more

Great breakfast 5/1/2006

A friend and I had breakfast at the Cameo last Sunday. We got there at 9:00 and were promptly seated. We both had the awesome chicken fried steak. It was perfect in every way: huge, crispy, covered in delicious sausage gravy, with perfectly crisp hashbrowns and their yummy signature ""strong bread."" Our server was very attentive. Their menu prices are a bit expensive, but the high quality of the food is worth it. more

Best Breakfast in Portland 3/27/2006

Can't beat the food. Go early or expect a long wait, but if you stick it out, you won't be disappointed. We haven't had a bad meal yet. The wait staff tends be young and bit inexperienced, but I could be confusing inexperience with a demanding weekend job. Great location that allows you walk off your waffles or skillet by strolling around trendy 23rd and perusing the long line of stores and coffee shops. Pros: Inexpensive, Breakfast Food, Atmosphere Cons: Crowded, Parking, Long Wait more

How does this place make anyone's TOP 10? 3/25/2006

Had breakfast there this morning. Food was good, but was extremely overpriced. THe place was noisy. Service was poor, and my son had to wait over 10 minutes to get his food after my wife and I had been served. To say this a a TOP 10 for Portland is a joke as well as an affront to my city! The only reason I went there in the 1st place was the recommendation of this Web Site, which is usuall dependable. I WILL NOT BE BACK! Pros: Good food Cons: Overpriced, Poor Service , Noisy more

Extremely disappointing 3/19/2006

My friends and I take weekend brunch very seriously and try to visit new places. Someone recommended CAMEO because of the obscenely large ""acre"" pancakes. Once we got to the restaurant, then wait for a table was long. The food was okay, but the price was ridiculous. I'd rather find the average, less fancy diner and get pancakes, eggs, bacon, and coffee for 10$ rather than 16$. The coffee served at CAMEO was undrinkable. The staff just seemed disorganized and busy. I'd be more willing to go with the flow on the late food or the fact the some of our party could have finished breakfast before other even got theirs... If you must shop Trendy-third St, who knows where you should eat brunch. I'd skip CAMEO. (It is expensive AND not good). There are plenty of other awesome, small, inexpensive breakfast spots with better food and much better coffee. more

New Ownership, better Cameo 2/12/2006

I must say that the changes being put in place by the new ownership are apparent. Yes there are still waits to be seated, and yes there are still waits for the food,...but with 300 people in the restarurant all trying to be fed by two kitchens, this is to be expected. The service has became so much better in the last few months. It seems that the staff is smaller and more effecient. I didn't ever have to wait for a cofee refill. The food quality has become better as well. Nice healthy portions, fresh fruit plates, the pancakes are the largest in portland. I am thrilled with the new changes. Looking forward to this summers breakfast on the patio. Pros: Great Service, Excellent food Cons: A bit of a wait more

New Owners? 1/30/2006

My girlfriend and I have been going to this restaurant for years, but this past Sunday was horrible. We weren't even acknowledged by the waitress for 20 minutes. and then we waited another 45 minutes for our meal. The most puzzeling part was we came after the brunch rush so there were only 3 other tables (all waiting and complaining about waiting too long for their food). My impression was it was not so much the waitresses' fault as the kitchen was lagging. To her credit she was trying to salvage the situation with grace and genuine perplexed befuddlement. I like this place enough to I consider chalking this up to a fluke and giving it another chance. Pros: Good Food, Great Hostess Cons: SLOW service more

I will never go back to the Cameo!! 1/29/2006

The only good thing I can say about the Cameo Cafe is that they can brew a decent cup of Folgers. Although after our 6th cup, I was feeling sick froms pangs of hunger. Our food finally arrived after watching three tables around us who had arrived LATER than us get their food. My $13 eggs, specifically ordered over-medium, were served undercooked with white runny stuff all over. When we asked the waitstaff for some new edible eggs, they seemed perplexed and we decided it was better to eat around the raw eggs than wait a lifetime for a new plate. There were no apologies and no one came to check on us again, obviously avoiding conflict rather than taking care of their customers. My companions waffle was fine, but not worth $9. Also, we were crammed into a small table in an overcrowded room with the kitchens music blaring. Cons: slow service, crowded, overpriced more

Mixed Bag, overall high $$ for what you get 10/12/2005

The Cameo has a great homey ambience with the Victorian house seating, and many cozy nook style eating areas. But the service seems pretty sub par. my first visit, I was seated by one waiter/ busser. No one ever came back to my table for over 10 minutes. the waiter was setting tables outside, the bartender saw me the whole time but i've never just sat at a table for so long. so i just stood up and walked out, and seriously i don't think anyone even noticed! The pancakes are good and large, but seriously, when most of the breakfasts are $10+ i think it's pushing a price limit. (the omlettes are $12+!) Pros: ambience, decor, coziness Cons: bad service more

Overrated 9/21/2005

I can honestly say this was THE worst eggs benedict I've ever had-a textbook case of what NOT to do. Pros: Bacon, Orange Juice Cons: Eggs Benedict, Hashbrowns more
