Our best memories of the whole town. A streetside cafe indoors. Not pretentious. It was a very good meal. The one place we will remember, and hope to call on again. Very pleased. ...

Editorial review from Citysearch 3/19/2014

I'm surprised at the negative reviews. My wife and I have eaten here over 6 times, and the thing we love is how consistent the quality of the food is. It's real Italian. We love the variety (especially for such a small restaurant). It's small, but the waitstaff usually does a great job of servicing us. If there is ever a small wait, we don't mind. That's how it's done in Italy... more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!!!!!! 3/13/2012

I cant even tell you how bad the food is cause I WILL NEVER GO THERE!!!! I called to make a reservation and find out what they have to do with the Purple Onion Comedy Club. I was treated HORRIBLY and was even asked ""What do you want?"" They barely spoke english and had NO PEOPLE SKILLS!!! We will not be going to this restaurant. We found a much better place.......The Stinking Rose. more

One of the worst Italian Restaurants I have ever been to. 3/7/2008

I went there the other night for dinner. The service was terrible and the food was very plain and didn't really have a good taste to it. Pros: nothing Cons: service and plain tasting food....i should of just made food myself more

Please avoid if you want good Italian food 1/11/2007

With all the competition in North Beach, I am surprised that this restaurant stays in business. The food was just plain bad. I had the Orecchiette con Broccoli Rabe. It is as if they looked at the ingredients for this dish, but did not know how to combine them properly. The sausage came cut into large chunks (like cubes of a hot dog), not broken down into the ground meat form that I am more accustom to. Nothing held the pasta and ingredients together. One of my dining companions ordered gnocchi. This is harder to get right, they just didn't come anywhere near. Trader Joe's frozen gnocchi tastes better. The only redeeming food items on the menu were a couple of the appetizers....their special salad for the day was pretty good and the pizza was not too bad. I will not be going back. Pros: Easy-going atmosphere Cons: Bad food, really bad food. more

Good Place For Friends 5/14/2006

TERRIBLE DINNER 8/30/2005

We were in the mood for Italian in North Beach..I have lived here for 6 years and thought that this place looked cute - It had to be good right?? WRONG. All 3 of us were underwhelmed and extremely disappointed. The portions were small, the tomatoes were not good, and the marinara sauce was out of a TV dinner. Do NOT recommend. Do not know how it has been around so long...someone should alert the tourists. Cons: food, expensive, service more

TOO Expensive... 9/25/2003

we finally decided to try this place out. At first, the waiters are funny but it's a bit much after a while. They're very pushy with wines and water and everything else, I sometimes felt like I dealing with a car salesman instead of a waiter. In the end the experience left a bad taste in my mouth, food was okay. I've definitely had better and this place is way overpriced for the overall experience and quality. I will not be going back. Cons: Pricey, Pushy staff, small cramped space. more

Just plain Bad... 4/2/2003

The waiter did not tell us about the specials that night which he did for the table next to us. The portion and quality of my spageghetti and meatballs were just terrible!! service was just poor. there are many other MUCH BETTER places to eat... esp. italian. Cons: bad food, bad service more

NOT RECOMMENDED 1/24/2003

This place has ok food, but the service is horrendous and the ambience non-existent. Waiters gave us weird looks when we only wanted water for drinks. more

Fabulous Firehazard 8/9/2002

Ok, so you take your life into your own hands by shoehorning into this tiny, cramped restaraunt. The host is loud and pushy, very Italian and yes, he wears gold chains. It's hot, loud, busy - and you'll love it. You'll be rolling your eyes, smacking your lips and praising the Oso Bucco, their veal and hands-down, the best Gnocci Gorgonzola. If you're expecting a real Italian experience, go here. If you want space and professional staff, go get a booth at TGIFridays. Pros: Great Food, Quirky, Location Cons: Cramped, Fire hazard, Cash only more

disappointing 7/28/2002

This restaurent is disappointing. I can't believed it is highly recommended here at Citysearch. The place is so crowded with small tables and the ceiling of the second floor is so low that you have to be very careful. Food is so so, and it is not cheap. After all, nothing to write home about. more

Real Italian Ambiance 7/23/2002

The Italian waiters and the style in the Dining room made me feel like I'd stepped into an Italian Country restaurant. The food was fabulous, and the shot of limoncello completed the meal perfectly. more

Early Weekday Dinner Enjoyable! 7/11/2002

The service was great for us when we got in before the crowd on a Wednesday eve. Food was wonderful! Odd thing, they didn't take credit cards yet this web site says they do. Oh well, wouldn't have changed a thing. Charming and great food. Pros: funky, good food Cons: no credit cards more

Italian waiters laying it on thick! 6/26/2002

Nothing like a trip to Caffe Macaroni to make a girl feel like she is the most beautiful woman in the world! The Italian waiters certainly do lay it on thick with the compliments. Although the flirtation is totally a act, it's kinda fun....I love the pasta, chiati and definitely recommend sitting upstairs. It's a sure thing and inexpensive to boot! more

Should I Stay or Should I Go 5/16/2002

After the last time I went here, I vowed never to return. My stance has softened a bit since then--perhaps I will give this ostensibly charming little spot another chance--but that last meal was the second distinctly unispiring experience I had had here. The food was bland and expensive and the staff was as oily and slippery as the linguini. Before those unpleasant dinners, however, I had some great expeiences at Macroni. Great meals, friendly waiters, good wine and good times. It's the memory of those times that might bring me back. The good memories are fading fast, however, and if I have another disappointing meal, I'm sure I'll never eat here again. Pros: Location, Atmosphere Cons: Food, Wait staff more
