There's no excuse for the contruction delays 6/30/2009

There is no excuse for the fact that the Cafe remodelling project has taken so long and has not been completed yet as we move past Gay Pride month into July. It's inexcusable that an establishment so highly visible at Castro and Market would not have the construction completely finished by the beginning of June in time for Gay Pride. Give me a break -- there's fiberglass insulation exposed on the outside of the main balcony! Couldn't you have at least made an effort to clean things up on the outside so it was not such an eyesore?? And please -- don't turn this mismanaged project into something it isn't, by pretending to have some sort of "preview" opening planned for Gay Pride, where you only let 300 people in at once. What a colossal embarrassment to the community! Why don't you just admit that the entire project, for whatever reason, is two months behind schedule? And by the way, you've completely missed the opportunity to create a rooftop patio. Couldn't you have planned to take advantage of this great space instead of making it just a plain roof? I've been up there -- it really could have been something spectacular. How many months went by during which no work was being completed in the evening in an effort to wrap this up in time for the Pride Celebration? Was it a cost issue? Were you not willing to pay overtime to the workers? I'm sure the lost revenues during the closure overshadowed that ten times over. This should be a lesson to other businesses in the community: when you want to do a major remodeling project, look at the way the Cafe project was managed and do the exact opposite so that your project is completed in a timely manner and is not a blight on the community. more

Great bar rude staff 1/2/2009

We ended up at the Cafe after having a bad experance at another bar. Everyone was very friendly, Mixed croud. The drink lines were long but it wasnt bad because everyone mingled with everyone! The only thing bad id have to say about the Cafe was that there was a extreemly rude bartender with curly brunette hair!! Other then that it was a great experance! more

Avoid the bitchy curly headed bartender! 8/14/2007

I recently brought my Southern GF to the Cafe (Sat. night) to show her where I use to hang out, but unfortunately I had a bad experience with a nasty, curly headed brunette bartender. Perhaps she was having a bad night because she was a total B**** when it came to using the pool table. She was so rude that we left after five minutes. Bummer. Paying twice/giving up my ID to play one game of pool was LAME! And to make matters worse, she was super nasty, rather than making a joke or simply explaining that the rules had changed. Whatever. I won?t be going back there anymore when I visit, nor will I recommend the Cafe to any of my East Coast friends? Pros: Spacious! Cons: Bad customer service! more

DEBAUCHERY! 3/23/2007

really citysearch? how can the word h*t be inappropriate? you are a prude city search, i am TRYING to tell my peeps about how much fun i had at the cafe, i could have been a lot more inappropriate, for instance, there was that scene on the pool table with that girl from vegas who put her ton**e in my ***** and told me she wanted to ***** my brains out in the bathroom. unfortunately, my ocd kicked in and all i could think about was germs. i can't even do it in my own house if the dishes aren't done...seriously. where was i....oh yes...the cafe...what a blast. we will be back! Pros: great company, great music, great time, great great great Cons: the bathroom. yuck. more

Fun, fun, fun! 10/31/2006

We had a blast last night! It was great, nice music, crowd and drinks. It just got really crowded and then every bodies are in constant touch with each other! Pros: dance, music, drinks Cons: too crowded, very mix crowd more

AWESOME 4/4/2006

I love The Cafe, it's always SOOO much fun. it doesn't matter what you are looking for: dancing all night long or hooking up with hot girls... or both! the cafe is your place. just be aware they are cash only, for the cover and for the drinks. Pros: hot ladies, strong drinks, great dancing Cons: cash only more

Always a FUN Night 5/1/2005

I go there every Monday religiously. I have been going there for over a month now and every monday was never a dull night. I have met so many people who are now my good friends. I recommend everyone to go gay, lesbian, bisexual, hag, or straight to go there. The drinks and music is always good. Trust me you all should go. more

Calling all Cafe-virgins! 9/29/2004

I do not visit San Fran as frequently as I did in past years. Regardless, the first place I visit (after unpacking my bags) is The Cafe. The bartenders are always friendly, and terrific at mixing drinks. The view from the balcony as the sun sets and the fog rolls over the mountain tops: PERFECT! This place is deserving of a visit, if you've never been. more

Loved it 7/5/2003

I was there on a Saturday night and the place became very packed (maybe too packed) around 11. I loved it anyway. There were many cute guys to look at, talk to, and dance with. People can get a little touchy-feely on the dance floor, so just make sure you're ready for that (after a few drinks, you really shouldn't mind!) Dancing was so much fun and I've haven't been to a club with so many cute guys in one place before. There were more guys than ladies, which is fine by me. I will be returning. Pros: Young, Good looking guys, Strong Drinks Cons: Need more restrooms more

Love this place 12/22/2002

I have been going to CAFE regularly in the last one year now and I simply love it. The music is repetitive but I love it. The drinks are strong and good and Louis (you will know who I mean once you go there) looks cuter by the day....If you are looking for normal gay guys and decent clean fun, come to the CAFE. lot of straight crowd also but cute gay guys too. Mostly invaded by asians but it doesnt bothor me. I love them and I love every one there. The people are friendly and I take all my straight friends there too. They love it too. Come to CAFE. see you there more

younger crowd, great hang out bar 11/18/2002

I think a lot of the older bitter queens are just getting irate. This place usually is for the younger crowd and is usually packed. I'm 26 and this really isn't my type of bar, but its the only place where you'll find men and women dancing in the Castro. The place is has no cover and EVERYONE knows it so if you don't like being crowed beyond belief, don't go on Fri/Sat. You'll find straight couples and a few gay boys w/ their straight girlfriends, not too many lesbians. The crowd is mostly gay boys 18-30 something, but everynight is different. If you go regularly, the music is repetative, but its current and you can dance to it. Hardcore ravers and house lovers will probably be dissapointed w/ the mainstream offerings. Drinks are priced fairly and strong! The bad thing about this place is how crowded it is. Pros: strong drinks, good place to dance, no cover! Cons: huge crowds, lot of bridge and tun, gross restrooms more

Friendly place 7/23/2002

met a lot of people at The Cafe. Good place to hang out. Music not that great tho. :) more

cute boys everywhere 7/22/2002

this is one of my favorite places to go to on a thursday night. more

Great Castro Bar 5/20/2002

All I can say is that if you're going to go on a Saturday night, get there before 11. Otherwise there's no way you'll find any room to dance. Seriously, the dancefloor will have long stretched its boundries into the main area and there STILL won't be any room to dance. If you can work your way out to the balcony overlooking Market Street, this is a great spot to enjoy a cigarette and to take advantage of the people watching vantage point. more

For the Young and Virile 5/15/2002

You gotta wonder how some of the boys get into The Cafe ... some of them look way too young. Of course, that's the appeal of the place ... a young, collegiate looking crowd that's ready to dance to the latest pop hits. Sure, the music isn't all that great, but this crowd is very forgiving. Drinks are standard, nothing that exceptional here. Thankfully, they've basically had the same staff for years, so if you want to be a regular, take the time to get to know them. You never know what kind of perks you might get. Pros: young crowd Cons: young crowd more

  • In Short
This place packs in a crowd of young, stylish lesbians and their queenier male friends. The music is standard house and hip-pop, but the vibe is just right for a lot of socializing and a little making out. There's also a patio and second-story veranda overlooking Market Street.
