I wanted to counter the "Happy Hour" review below. That review WAS true in 2005, but isn't any longer. I, too, remember a golden age of $3 drinks and appetizers. Well, as of now, ...

Better Than Previous Iterations 9/28/2009

This place has been formerly our governor's ""Shatze"" and more recently ""Hidden"". This is its best iteration!!! Cache has a beautiful open space. You can lounge on candle-lit couches and look at the sky. The drinks are really interesting. (infused with sage, rosemary). They sound earthy and wacky but are actually pretty good! The appetizers were a bit odd but good. The fire-roasted calamari was awesome. Great date spot. Pros: Beautiful Space/Very Comfortable Cons: Odd Menu more

I don't know if the previous review was submitted from an old memory or is a fake, but Schatzi on Main is permanently closed and has been for a few months. There is no more Schatzi on Main. It is boarded up and there is a sign saying that a restaurant called "Hidden" is coming soon. more

I love to go to Schatzi, it is the best place here in Santa Monica. The food is always fresh, the meat super tender, even fruit taste different. The apple strudel is to die for. And I have lived in Austria for several years and know that is the real stuff, prepared exactly like they do there on the other side of the pond. The service is one of the best also. Promptly seated and if you dont like it and want to change... no problem; they treat you as if you are kings and queens visiting the place. What I love the best is the quietness and closeness. I can actually whisper and be heard. Well, that would be over Brunch on Sunday mornings.... it can be pretty loud during happy hours, but I havent been to those. I enjoy the quietness and soothing atmosphere on weekends mornings. more

Hadn't been to Schatzi's Happy Hour in awhile, so we popped in before a movie...wondered where all the people were? Well, guess they caught on before me -- the Happy Hour we knew and loved with $3-4 drinks/food, margarita pitchers and lots of locals had been replaced with $9 well drinks in tiny glasses and maybe two other suckers like us inside!! This used to be the best place to hang...no more. Me and my friends will never see the inside of that joint again--blink and you'll see an Olive Garden in its place. Venice weeps.... more

bad service, average food, way too expensive for what you get. I had the worst Bloody Mary of my life at this restaurant. No wonder we were two of a total of six people here on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Don't go here - it's just not good. Pros: good location Cons: everything else more

Unhappy Hour 2/2/2007

I wanted to counter the "Happy Hour" review below. That review WAS true in 2005, but isn't any longer. I, too, remember a golden age of $3 drinks and appetizers. Well, as of now, Schatzi's "Happy Hour" menu now offers $7-$12 well drinks and, oh, yes, $4 beer. The food selections run a similar price range. Sad to say, paying $9 for a weak Cape Cod is not what I think of when I think of "Happy Hour." Schatzi on Main is certainly a well-populated trendy place, filled with all kinds of beautiful people, but it is emphatically NOT the "Happiest Hour on Main St." Pros: definitely a "scene" Cons: overpriced, weak drinks more

Came here with my girlfriend a few weeks ago and had an interesting meal. We didn't like the options on the menu at first but after we had our food were pleasantly surprised. A very European feel throughout the restaurant. more

Loads of Europeans and immigrants here. It makes it a different vibe that is so much fun. Food was pretty darn good but the company on the outdoor terrace was so much more fun. Arnold would have fit in well if he was there. Life of the European party. more

went here for dinner with friends based on good reviews...what a mistake! food was fine, nothing great, but service was awful...we waited over an hour for our dinner, then one meal was wrong and had to be sent back which was another 30 min...it wasn't even a busy night, there were many open tables...when the manager came by our table to ask about the meal, we told her of our complaints with the service...her response was "oh"...and then she walked away!! obviously they did not care for our business and they won't be getting it again. Pros: good location on main Cons: the terrible service! more

With a lengthy $3 menu of food and drink and plenty of outdoor seating, Schatzi's has the best happy hour in lower Santa Monica. Great atmosphere, friendly waitress and a tasty bar menu make this the perfect place to hang out and relax after work. Get there early and grab the best seats around the fire pit! Pros: Happy Hour, Atmosphere, Service more

Great Place to Hang Out 7/13/2004

The food was great. Reasonable price for a huge piece of prime rib. It's about ten dollars cheaper than a comparable prime rib at other restaurants in Los Angeles. I was very satisfied. And the location is great if you want to go to the beach after or if you want to go hang out on Main Street after dinner. Cool ambience. Just a really great place to dine with some friends. Pros: Cool Ambience, Parking Nearby, Great Location more

My favorite place day or night for over 3 years now. The service is always warm, welcoming and efficient My family is from Bavaria and the Austrian choices are as authentic as my mom would make. The sunday breakfasts are fantastic, the outside patio is wonderfull on sunny days and romantic when the fire is lit at night. I can go there for a special romantic date, lunch with friends or a kid friendly family gathering. I know I will always have a wonderfull time with great food and great service. Pros: food, ambiance, consistantly great Cons: none more

Good AND authentic German and Austrian food is hard to find in southern California. Schatzi's is certainly one of the best. Whether enjoying continental specialties on a Cigar nite or entertaining out-of-town associates, it is a winner. Service is some of the best without LaCienega arrogance. Charlie and Helmut run a top-notch place, while we always look to see who sits at the "stamm tisch." Germanic food is more than just schnitzel and schtrudel - as the staff makes great recommendations based on what's special each week. The "Arnold" gallery is great once, but the food and staff will keep us coming back. Pros: Authentic food, Helpful staff Cons: hard to find more

its a pity that austrian/german restaurants are not as popular in this area as other 'cuisines'. people who like diversify when going out to eat surely will appreciate this place all the way to the icecreams which are fabulous. Pros: menu composition, ice cream!!!!! more
