The 'hottest' Indian restaurant! 8/25/2002

India Castle has tastefully accomplished what might be though of as nearly impossible; distinguishing itself as the preeminent Indian restaurant in the greater Boston/Cambridge area. Even a quick glance of the extensive menu will familiarize the reader with an abundance of succulent choices sure to enduce a modest amount of salivation. The spicest dishes are crafted with an attention to taste that rivals the best Indian restaurants around the world. If a more delicate palate is in attendance the chicken korma is a wonderful choice. The Peshawari nan is second to none and the best this author has tasted. The wait staff is gracious, knowledgeable and eager to provide studied suggestions. The restaurant is clean, well illuminated and modern; providing the diner with a charm that is sublte and complementary to its world class menu. A must try! more

  • The Scene
Indian fusion is so hot that it's becoming a cliché, so it's a delight to find a contemporary Indian dining room with a traditional menu that isn't mired in 1960s nostalgia for sandalwood and mirrored clothing. Popular with many Cambridge Sikhs, India Castle also makes a good, inexpensive date for the college crowd and a convenient spot to chow down before a night at nearby Plough & Stars.

    The Food
The menu nods to all parts of India, but northern dishes are the kitchen's forte. Potato patties with spinach and minced ginger (saag tikki) are delicate and pungent, nicely complemented by tamarind or minted yogurt sauces. The ghee-sauteed lamb in rogan josh seems to melt into the tangy, dark ginger-garlic sauce. The searing heat of the tandoor oven gives chicken marinated in lemon and garlic just the right tender bite. Desserts are more disappointing--best to stick with ginger or saffron ice cream.
