Shut-ins is great. It is very clean and everyone there is friendly. It is crowded in a fun way. A great day trip. Get there early so you don't spend your day waiting to get in. P.S. remember is it no ones fault if you can't go right in. Pros: Beautiful, a lot of fun, clean Cons: the wait to get in more

  • The Scene
For pure longevity, nothing can compare to the maze of billion-year-old water slides and chutes known as Johnson's Shut-ins State Park in the Arcadia Valley. Volcanic activity in that cataclysmic age formed barriers and narrow channels that hemmed the flow of the Black River. Aeons of water flow carved out the pocked, otherworldly formations and gorges now visited by thousands a year.

    What to Do
Swimming is an adventure here--one can slide from pool to pool like an otter or pick one and occupy it hot-tub-style. Other activities include hiking, rock climbing (with permit) and camping (make a reservation early in the season). For the intrepid hiker, Taum Sauk Mountain is nearby. For the slightly less energetic, a quarter-mile path affords an impressive overlook of the Shut-ins.
