I read a great article about Louis 649 on Behind the Burner (.) com more

Disappointing 8/14/2009

The cocktail menu is nice, but that's not all that unique in New York. The music was too loud, the customers seemed to be local barflys for the most part (not the charming kind, either) and I just can't think of any reason to go back when there are so many more fun bars in this city! Pros: Nice bartender Cons: Creepy clientele more

cool venue,great drinks, AWFUL BAR-LADY/WAITRESS 5/5/2009

WATCH OUT FOR THE TATOOED BARMAID WITH THE EVIL ATTITUDE...... Everybody in my group complained to me about her which tainted but did not ruin a fun night, I don't think she realized some of my guests new the owner relatively well. It was a shame as apart from that Louis was a good experience with very good drinks. Pros: Great Drinks and Liquor, Quality Cons: Potentially rude service more

No Live Jazz--Profile needs to be updated 9/19/2008

Went all the way down here this summer because we had a great time in 07 when we went here and listed to some live Jazz. The staff was nice, but we would not of went if we knew! more

Horrible Service 6/5/2008

I have been to this place a couple of times and liked the music there. So on saturday after my birthday dinner with a small group of friends we headed there. Service was very poor, the waitress had a major attitude. We waited for the second round of drinks for too long, finally they came but we were still missing two. The bartender was busy chatting with his friend instead of fixing our drinks. When we got the bill it included 20% gratuity (calculated incorrectly at ~24%). We paid the bill and left ~13% tip as the service was poor. When we were walking out my friend gave the cash to the bartender and explained we left 13% tip as we found service inadequate. He started going crazy. Raised his hands and started telling his friend, would you believe this! Then he came outside as we walked out of the place and started arguing, knowing it was my birthday! I could not believe this! I of course had to engage in a long conversation with him, but he was simply obnoxious, illogical, rude. I'm not going back. Cons: Bartender more

Our Favorite Neighborhood Joint 6/4/2008

My room mates and I love this place. Zach is not only super knowledgeable about everything he serves; he's also a great guy and extremely friendly, setting the tone for a fantastic, laid-back bar. The cocktails are made with the best ingredients, and unlike some other trendy joints in the area, he doesn't skimp on quantity. It's the perfect place to hang out and listen to some jazz with friends. Definitely swing by if you are in the neighborhood--especially if you have a date. more

UNFRIENDLY OWNER/BARTENDER 7/28/2007

I DON'T KNOW IF HE WAS JUST A BARTENDER OR A BARTENDER/OWNER AS WELL. BUT WHO EVER HE WAS, HE WAS ETREMELLY DIRESPECTFUL IN THE WAY HE TALKED TO MY FRIENDS AND I AS WE WERE TRYING TO ORDER A DRINK. THE OTHER YOUNGER MALE BARTENDER WAS VERY NICE THOUGH. I WOULD NOT GO BACK TO THIS PLACE EVER AGAIN, NOR WOULD I RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE JUST BECAUSE OF THE SERVICE ALONE FROM THIS ONE INDIVIDUAL. Cons: UNFRIENDLY BARTENDER/OWNER more

best live jazz - no cover - just donation; best wine selection 4/24/2007

Great place to have port [maybe even a cigar - I'll have to ask] with friends or lover to warm soft jazz...cozy...very very small space but sooooo warm!! I loved the bartender [? owner] and his dog [who was also uber friendly]....I love these hidden little gems in the city...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Pros: everything Cons: small :( more

very chill evening 11/14/2006

My cousin and I always get together and go to lounges but we really wanted to try something different. I found Louis 649 on citysearch and we were not dissapointed. This small nook of a jazz club made for a perfect night out. As soon as we entered we felt very comfortable the (very cute) bartender and the owner felt like they were our old buddies- the wine selection is fantastic- and so what if it's served in plastic cafeteria style cups- it just adds to the homey feel of the place. The musicians were phenominal and the crowd was so eclectic- it was obvious that everyone was there to relax and hear some great music. We sat next to a guy that was clearly a regular doing his work at the table- we sipped wine and looked through coffee table photography books and played with the owners adorable dog that could sleep right through the music but got restless between sets and would stand up behind the bar. Everything about this place was wonderful- we left feeling like we had tried something new and we had a very relaxing and entertaining evening. We will definately be making Louis 649 one of our regular haunts. Pros: comfortable atmosphere, great wine list, great music Cons: cheese plate... not recomended more

Great Experience! 6/15/2006

Was looking for a chill jazz bar...looked t the other reviews on Citysearch, and decided this was the place to go....I was definitely not dissapointed! We ended up closing out the bar and kicking it with the owner and his Dog (FYI: Best dog ever, especially bc it will never stop chasing it's tail) and chewing the fat. Great music, great wine and single malt scotch selection, perfect atmosphere...basically you can't loose! more

Don't go there to talk and catch up with friends 2/25/2006

The place is cozy and intimate, however, there is very little space. The area across from the bar is very narrow and it's difficult not to be pushed by passersby. I was there with friends to catch up on things but we found ourselves to close to the jazz players and therefore we could not ever hear one another. We were hot and sweaty even though it was bitter cold outside. Don't get me wrong, it is very laid back-- looks like you could have a good time, especially if you sit at one of the tables in the back. Crowded and definitely "in". Pros: Cozy, Free jazz, Good beer/wine list Cons: Too small, loud more

Good service, Great atmosphere, Fantastic music! 12/23/2005

The first two things that stuck me upon entering Louis 649 were the great atmpsohere and the awesome musicians playing in the front. After I got settled, I was pleased to find the service friendly and knowledgeable. This is the kind of place that you can feel comfortable bringing a date, a few friends, or even going alone if you are just in the mood to get a good drink and enjoy the music. The drinks are a little pricey, but nothing abnormal for Manhattan. I would definitely recommmend this bar to anyone that enjoys fine drinks and jazz! Pros: wonderful live music, great atmosphere Cons: a little pricey more

super cozy! 12/23/2005

And i love cozy! everything here is wonderful, though i think the decor in the back of the room looks more like they may still be moving in. other than that, i love coming here. their choices of wine are exceptional, and the same goes for the beers. i would love to know if they did seasonal rotations. that would be cool. Pros: cozy, romantic, good wine Cons: decor in back, no food more

Non Wine Tastings 9/29/2005

Great Atmosphere, Great Wine, Loved the Dog. One problem.... City Search's "The Scene" description said they offer "tastes of reds,.....for $4 - $8..." - when I asked the bartender for wine tastings he said they don't do tastings and seemed a bit surprised I asked. Ave C is a heck of a walk for wine tastings that don't exist. Damn! Pros: single malt scotch Cons: no wine tastings more

A gem in the City 9/28/2005

Louis is the type of bar where the romantic atmosphere, dim lights, and live music with hip jazz beats mix to create the perfect ambiance for a city-slick getaway. The owner is always happy to greet the newcomers, fraternize with the old comers, and help cater to your every need. This bar is truly a gem in a busy city! more

Shhh! Don't Tell Everybody! :) 9/7/2005

Louis 649 is the ultimate neighborhood bar. Good jazz, good beer and exciting wine. Might even be the first neighborhood "jazz" spot...at least around these parts. Never had a bad night here - wish I could spend more here. Pros: Low Key, Exceptional Music, Intl. Beer / Wine Cons: Word is out!, GF jealous of hotties, Bad if you hate jazz more

User review by taylorgiacoma 9/7/2005

The jazz is as fine as the wine. Highly recommended if you have a cultivated but laid-back appreciation for both. You can have a quiet conversation in the back or just sit at the bar and listen to the music. Both experiences are accomodated by the low-key atmosphere. more

  • This small bar's minimal, under-construction look springs from mismatched tables, blond wood benches and an untreated concrete floor. Some red bulbs and scattered art spruce it up for the laid back local set--as does the bar's yipping pet pooch. As far as hooch goes, beers from Belgium, New York and Great Britain--don't bother asking for Heineken or Miller Lite--accompany an extensive list of cocktails, single malt scotches, bourbons and international wines.
