Waiter, there is a hair in my calamari 5/30/2008

This review is for the Tyler's in Durham, not sure this is the same location, but still Tyler's tap room. We went there for dinner. After waiting 20 minutes for our waitress to even get to our table, we waited another 10 minutes for drinks and to order. Another 20 miutes elapsed and we were finally got our meals. Unfortunately, my wife's calamari had a big hair all curled up in it. After having to hunt down the waitress, she came by and took the salad. No appology, nothing, just took it and left. Well, at this point, our appetites were gone from the wait and from the hairy salad. Manager finally came out and said they took the salad off our bill. Why gees, thanks for not charging us for the hairy salad. Service is terrible. Hair in the food is over the top. Pros: Location Cons: Sanitation, service more

Nice Place, Not Hospitable 1/25/2008

I was celebrating my birthday and invited a few friends to come to Tyler's for a quick bite or drink before we ventured to another larger party. BAD IDEA. I heard more about their Friday night policies than I cared to. The food was good, the server was great, but the folks that run the place should re-examine their career choice. If you are not going to be hospitable, then don't get into the hospitality business. Will never go back. Pros: Food and drink was fine Cons: Too rules for seating, very unpleasant hostess more

Gave it a shot, not going back again. 9/30/2007

We didn't eat there so there's no complaint about the food. The layout was decent, the beer selection was decent, the service was not a problem until it became one. We just watched a football game at the bar on a lazy sunday afternoon. The bar staff, all girls, asked us to keep the ""noise down"" repeatedly until they suggested we might be happier in their ""back bar"", which we didn't even know existed. We noticed they did the same to other patrons as well simply for clapping at the game, which was basically all we were doing too. There was One (1) family in the dining room and maybe 8 people in the place in total. I can understand wanting to maintain an image standard in their dining area but we felt that was a little excessive. After that we felt awkward and just weirded out by that. Shortly afterward we decided to move someplace a little less restrictive but when we did go I disputed a couple of beer orders which I was sure I had already paid for. Not arguing, just questioning. The bartender simply said OK and removed them from the bill, the other bartender, presumably the manager, took back the adjusted tab from me and replaced it with the original stating ""I was the sober one I knew what you had"". Can you get any ruder than that? It was only a difference of $11! And if they really wanted to keep customers coming back she should have just adjusted it. Instead I got a smart*** remark. She didn't even bother to check the receipts to see if I was wrong. Mistakes happen and I very well may have been the one at fault but to make such a fuss over $11 made us feel unwelcome and unwanted. It is because of her I will never return and will advise others to do the same. Pros: Good beer selection, excellent decor Cons: less than courteous service more

Great selection of beer AND food. 4/14/2006

Pretty good beer selection - and some great deals on pint nights. The food is above average for a bar - I hesistate to even call it pub grub. There is a great selection in addition to the standard options of burgers, etc. The cajun catfish and french dip are some faves. Unusual for a pub is their great dessert list - the peanut butter mousse is awesome! Overall, it's a great place for after work, or to hang out with friends. The adjoining speakeasy with pool tables and a bar makes this a great place to spend a night! Pros: Food, Beer, Speakeasy more

Speakeasy is awesome! 1/12/2006

I go to Speakeasy almost every time I go to DSI Comedy Theater. It is an awesome bar. Sometimes you can even find the comedians there! more

Great grub, better beer 12/11/2005

I have frequented Tyler's on many occasions and was extremely pleased my most recent visit. I ordered the Old West Burger and garlic fries everything was exceptional! To drink I had a Corsendonk Christmas Ale. The beer selection is great and each beer comes in it's own glass!! To eat, I sat at the bar (there was a wait) and the bartenders were extremely friendly, prompt and courteous. What struck me most was how well everyone at the bar knew each other. This IS a neighborhood bar. I had a great time and'll recommend Tyler's to my colleagues. If you haven't been - go. If you have small children - this seems the place to be. There were a lot of families with small children in the dining room. I might have to rethink my trips to McDonald's with the kids and instead steer the minivan towards Carrboro (or Durham)! Pros: Beer selection, Cheeseburger, Atmosphere more

Never order Thai Rice 12/7/2005

I've heard good reviews about this place from others and decided to try for the first time the other night. Clueless about our selections, we asked for recommendations from the staff. I ordered Thai rice and my husband ordered fish & chips as the waitress recommended. Thai rice was probably the most tasteless dishes I've ever had in my life that I couldn't finish the dish after a few spoons. I have an Asian background and I should've been wise enough to not order an Asian dish at a comfort food place. The fish was fried too long making the fish too dry and blackened. The garlic fries were good though. Pros: Garlic fries, Comfortable atmospher Cons: Thai rice, Food in general more

Total Disappointment 9/10/2005

Took the inlaws here for a casual dinner. Their food was good- 4 bean chili, blackened catfish, and pear salad. We all LOVED the garlic fries. Our entrees were terrible- meaty lasagne tasted like Stouffers and the portobello mushroom stuffed with champagne feta risotta was way too vinegary and looked like it had been sitting under the heat lamp for a while... Would reccomend for good pub food, but past that I think I would rather go elsewhere. more

Well worth the drive from Raleigh! 10/6/2004

Ive been going to Tylers Taproom & Restaurant (& The Speakeasy) since shortly after they opened. Whether its for lunch, a couple of beers, a night on the town, a date, or for one of Tylers special events, I always leave satisfied. Tylers has a tremendous selection of beer and wine, home-cooked tasting food, wonderful service, and a warm, cozy atmosphere. While their fries are out-of-this-world, youve got to try their mashed potatoes. They are fantastic! If youve never eaten fried pickles, give Tylers a try. Youll be glad you did. Tylers also does BBQ right! Their pulled-pork and smoked ribs are both top notch! If youre wondering about the right choice of wine to go with your meal, Ive found that Tylers friendly and knowledgeable staff is more than willing to give you a hand. I have one question, when is Tyler going to open a place in Raleigh?!?! Pros: Great beer selection, Splendid tasting food, Comfy atmosphere more

Great Food, Atmosphere & Service 9/27/2004

Beer, appetizers, comfort food, pizza, dessert, great atmosphere and service - Tyler's has it all! I really like the BBQ Quesadilla and the J-Cheesy Pizza - both dishes that are unique to Tyler's. And who can resist the Peche Lambic on tap? Yum! The only problem is trying to decide what to eat! more

Great Food and Fun Times 9/13/2004

I have been going to Tyler's for about three years. It is one of my favorite places to eat and have a beer or two!!! They have a huge selection of burgers and the FRIES ARE THE BEST IN THE TRIANGLE! Tyler's has an everchanging beer selection--- with a variety of events throughout the week. The Speakeasy is a great place to play pool, and they have recently put in better smoke eaters to make it more non smoker friendly. The service is outstanding and personalized, and it keeps me coming back. Pros: Family Friendly, Beer Selection, Service more

Needs work 6/23/2004

You know, I want to like Tyler's more than I do. The beer selection is fantastic, the food is good, but I can't get past the service. I'm a regular there and I'm reconsidering whether or not I'd like to continue to be. My group of friends has met there weekely for years, yet we're treated pretty poorly for folks who leave with a tab that collectively runs *well* over $100 each visit. Tyler himself is great. There are members of the staff that ""get it"", but most of them have a lot to learn about pub hospitality. I wish Tyler the best, because he has a quality operation on many levels, but after 100 visits, I still get the feeling that some other bar deserves my patronage more. After a great experience at Federal in Durham, I'm thinking that would be the place if it were a little closer. Pros: Beer Selection, The food is good., Tyler (the owner) Cons: , Often flat out rude. more

Less than satisfying.... 12/8/2003

I ordered the ribs, my wife had pumpkin and gogonzola risotto, and my friend had meatloaf. When my ribs arrived, it instantly occurred to me that they were tough and fatty. The server recognized this himself, and admitted that they were not cooked correctly. Yet, he never offered to take them off the check. This is something that the customer should never have to beg for -- especially when the server admits that the food was not prepared correctly. Only attempt at recompense was offer of a free beer. Big deal - ribs were $17; beer is $4. I declined offer out of principle. As for ribs, I ate two and pushed the plate aside. My wife generously shared her risotto (supposed to be prepared with pinenuts and parmesan; both were noticably missing). I'm NEVER one complain about restaurant food or service, but this experience left something to be desired. Pros: Atmosphere, Beer Selection, Menu Variety Cons: BBQ Ribs, Service more

Bartenders 11/27/2003

Tyler's is a nice place for a night out; however, the service at the bar is horrible. The restaurant has good ambience, good food, and plenty of parking. However, I recently had a bad experience at Tylers. First, the Bartender's are pains in the neck. They have an attitude with the customers. There is no excuse for Bartenders getting 'fresh' with the customers. Pros: Ambience, Food, Parking Cons: Bartender, Service more

Bitter bartender,not beer!! 11/14/2003

Our group meets at Tylers frequently. We enjoy the beer selection and the good, simple food. The female bartender last night had a bit of an attitude. We ordered a lot of mixed drinks so perhaps she was ""working"" harder than normal? She should stick to pouring beer from the tap and leave the more ""difficult"" drinks to someone else who doesnt need to look everything up in a Bartender's manual. Pros: atmosphere, beer, inexpensive Cons: crowded at bar area more

Good and Bad 8/8/2003

Tyler's has a lot going for it, good food (especially the garlic fries), great beer selection, and a nice bar. But every time my wife and I go there we get terrible service at the bar. We've never had a problem with the wait staff, but we tend to be bar flies and it's upsetting to always have to put up with either being ignored, or spoken to like it's a burden. Bartenders should be friendly! Unfortunately it's to the point that we never go there anymore. Maybe we'll try again in a year or so. Pros: Great beer selection, Good food Cons: Bad bartending more

Great Place to Dine and Drink 1/9/2003

Tyler's has great food and a terrific beer selection. You can even get sample sizes of the beers so you can try them all. It's definitely one of the best kept secrets in Carrboro. Pros: Wide Beer Selection, Great Food, Friendly Staff Cons: Parking on Weekends more
