This was the very best book store in or out of the states. Even better than the best books shop in New York or in Hay of Wye in England. Burke Used Books donated thousands of books to the local schools. My daughters school received an entire truck load and the books were distributed to all the children at years end. They also donated books to local nursing homes and while that was great they sent tens of thousands of books overseas to US Military in Iraq, Afganistan and other places. And anyone who'd ever been in the store and met Bill knew a special treat unknown anywhere else in the world. How many languages did that guy speak? And he could quote any book in the store! Clearly the people who ran the store took great pride in it and in their community. Too bad the landlord saw all the good deeds and thought that they and not those in need should have the money. I was there when the owner was talking to the landlord the week they closed. Evidently the idiot wanted to raise the rent to nearly 10,000 a month! Can you imagine? For that place? The store was great, but that wasn't the landlord's doing that was the store owners. You looked at the shopping center and it's cut off and unkept. I bet they didn't share their ""take"" with the community, they certainly never put any money back into the center. They didn't provide free anything to anybody. And the owner was sick too, so they forced the old gal out--and look what it got them? A year without any rent at all. Who's next do you think? First it was Khans, then the Burke Used Books, will it be the pizza place, the dry cleaners or....? Does anyone know what happened to the owner? I heard that she died in March but can't find anything about her anywhere.
