Best

I may not be a foodie, but I've been to Barcelona and went to amazing tapas restaurants.

Worst

Firstly, my wife and I love tapas and the small plate concept. Both of us have lived in Europe and have ties to Spain. That being said, I recognize that not every tapas restaurant...

Tasty. Fun. Will be Back! 11/7/2006

My BF and I went here right after they got two stars from the Times, and were a little worried that it would be super crowded. We were right, IT WAS. But the wait for two people on a Friday night was only 30 minutes, and we were able to snag some seats at the bar and check out the wine list (awesome) and the SANGRIA (more awesome!!) Pros: Fun, Friendly, TASTY Cons: Crowded more

Good stuff and getting better, despite growing pains 11/1/2006

Was disappointed the first time we went there, and said as much on the comment card (and here). The manager actually emailed me the next day and had us back. We have been back about once a week since then and have been consistently impressed. The food is really good (especially the lentil stew and the prime rib. Yum.), and the service is getting better, despite some growing pains. Management goes out of its way to please. Took my uncle and aunt there over Thanksgiving weekend, and my notoriously hard-to-please (and very vocal about such things) uncle proclaimed it ""the best meal I've had out in I don't know how long."" We will continue coming back regularly. Pros: Delicious food and creative drinks (beer sangria!), management cares about performance, fresh ingredients; good wine list; beer "sangria" innovative and tasty Cons: Service still somewhat uneven but getting better more

Fabuloso Catalonian tapas and great service 10/14/2006

Having lived in Spain a while back, I chose to wander into Boqueria one early Saturday evening after a day of museum hopping (I now live in Chicago). I found a lovely, coolly elegant room and took a seat at the marble-top bar. Jessie, the bartender, was very helpful, explaining the menu and specials, and recommending an excellent Chilean white wine. I had several tastes - Navajas, sliced razor clams grilled and mixe with fresh corn and smoked bacon and served in the shell - Txipirones, sauted baby squid served on a bed of greens with fried garbanzos, radish and olive - Anchovy, one perfectly fried fresh anchovy served with greens, and and a cheese and meat sample (I chose Idiazabal and lomo). All were terrifically fresh, very tasty and nicely presented. The staff and the chef, Seamus Mullen were friendly and professional, and seemed genuinely interested in making sure my dining experience was a good one. I've dined at innumerable ""tapas"" bars over the years - I can honestly say this one is one of the best I've been to. Pros: The food and service. more

Beautiful decor + amazing food = going back for more. 10/11/2006

space is beautifully finished.. and very inviting. Pros: nice menu, good atmosphere Cons: crowded. more

overrated 10/9/2006

we went to boqueria because we enjoyed dining out at suba in a group and we heard it was by the same owner. if you go, i recommend you stick to the sangria and tapas. the main course was forgettable. and when we were leaving the maitre de accosted us to see why we hadnt tipped over 20%! the service was mediocre and in fact he had made no effort to make us comfortable (its communal seating and so we had to share, but when we suggested a different seating pattern to maximize conversation flow he dismissed it). on the whole. its a good place if you are a group of friends who dont have a reservation for a saturday night dinner (they dont take reservations) but the food and sangria is slightly better than average, and be prepared to overpay on service or else you will be accosted on the way out. ... in sum, better tapas at sala and definitey better service more

Trendy Spanish 10/4/2006

If you want to experience some authentic Spanish cuisine in a great atmosphere with an attentive staff Boqueria is the place to go. Good for a casual date or a small group. Go early or very late to avoid a wait... Pros: Thumbs all the way up on the food and Service Cons: Wait... more

One of the Best Lunch Spots I've Been To! 10/3/2006

After reading a number of great reviews about Boqueria, I decided to pop in during my lunch break and give it a shot. It's close to work so I thought, why not? I don't have the luxury of taking a long break so I was concerned that I might be stuck there too long, but I was definetely in the mood for some good food and didn't want the same ol' deli sandwich. I took a seat at the marble counter tapas bar where there were presentations of delicious bocatas (sandwiches) and cocas(open face sandwiches). These were freshly made and only required some grill time - great, speed! I had difficulty choosing between the Bocata Serrano (serrano ham, manchego cheese, roasted peppers...) and the Coca de Boquerones (white anchovies, potatoes, goat cheese...). Honestly, they all looked great. I stuck with the coca de boquerones and it was delicious. While taking it all in, I noticed in the dining area that there were larger groups enjoying a more relaxed lunch and ordering hotter plates like paella and sauteed garlic shrimp. After studying the menu and talking with the friendly bartender, I decided that I might possibly be addicted to this place. Great service, great food, great decor and great options. Pros: Great service, menu and ambiance more

Fantastic wine list. Fabulous menu from tapas to mains. 10/2/2006

The atmosphere is perfect, with the attention to detail brilliantly subtle. I have been every week since it opened, and opening issues are basically over. Service is lovely, with knowledge wait staff. Fun vibe, sorta normal for NY -- not too over the top. A real neighborhood find that is always fun to go to. Love taking people to it, they feel like they have found a gem. Pros: variety, comfortable seating, diverse crowd Cons: not sure about no reservations, but so far its okay, might be a little too loud with the music especially if with a large group. Had to scream over the meal more

Terrific new restaurant 9/29/2006

This just opened in my nabe. I don't cook, so I'm always looking for places. What I REALLY like about this one is that you can order a little or a lot depending on your mood. Thats particularly good at lunch if you don't have a lot of time. Plus lunch is still quiet (dinner is a zoo with all the beautiful people oggling each other) but I expect lunch to pick up as the weather cools off. Pros: Great selections, excellent wine list, cool decor Cons: Crowded at night. more

Good food, great atmosphere, terrible service! 9/26/2006

If you want a great glass of sangria and some tasty tapas, this is your place. However, if you care at all about the service you receive when you go out stay away from this place!!! My friend and I went in last night (Tuesday) and the place was bustling. When we talked to the hostess, she said there wasn't a list but we could sit at the bar and have a drink while we wait for a table; so we did. We proceeded to order some wine and tapas from the bartender and to wait....and wait....and wait. Not once did the hostess come over to us and when I asked about our table she brushed me off! We tried to make the best of it and enjoyed each other's company while others got seated ahead of us and the hostess disregarded us completely! When we left I spoke to her about her process and the fact that she never sat us. She proceed to actually YELL at me and brought the manager over! I told the manager that everything about the place was great, except the service needed work. He was apologitic but didn't offer anything for our trouble. I told him that I would NEVER come back to this place based on how we were treated....THERE ARE PLENTY OF GOOD TAPAS PLACES IN THIS CITY WHERE YOU WILL ACTUALLY GET TREATED LIKE A PERSON, NOT A NUISANCE! Pros: Good sangria, tasty tapas Cons: TERRIBLE SERVICE, AWFUL HOSTESS! more

Food as beautiful as the people 9/4/2006

Sangria, Tapas, and rocking music. Stick to eating at the marble bar to really absorb the NY fashinistas.. Were not in Kansas anymore! Pros: Food, Hotties, Environment Cons: They dont have restuarants like this in my town more

Tapas finally done right! 8/26/2006

after spending much of my adult life in the barcelona region i am thrilled that a ny locale finally captures the true flavor of tapas. some of my favorite dishes so far include mini toast topped with chorizo and sunny-side up quail eggs, bacon wrapped dates (yumm!) and a squid ink paella. although they offer 3 kinds of sangria, i preferred the red (after sampling all three in quantity ; )). wine list was extensive and matched food well. \r \r decor- the only way i can describe it is a modern design lucky strike (the downtown institution). it is modern, yet warm. it was a perfect location to bring my date. the atmosphere is festive and busy but you can have a quiet chat in one of the creamy leather banquettes. intimate, but not to intimate...\r \r service- bar tender was well versed in spanish wine, waitress was not. took 15 minutes to get seated (had drinks at bar) service was slow to get espresso and check (very spanish). Pros: food, decor, pretty people Cons: wait to get seated, slow to get espresso more

Fantastic food, great downtown vibe 8/25/2006

Boqueria is a perfect addition to the growing number of modern tapas spots in Manhattan. The atmosphere is causal, but sophisticated and the food is terrific. The Spanish ham and cheese selection is really extensive and the lamb skewers on the menu's small plates section are out of this world! Definitely a top spot for a relaxed dinner and drinks with friends... Pros: Atmosphere, food Cons: No reservations, but the wait is never too long more

Great Spanish food, rustic yet sophisticated 8/22/2006

Contrary to the other reviews, this is not 'just' a tapas menue. There are about four different sized plates available, which range in size from small, single serving foods that are intended as cocktail snacks, all the way up to large plates, akin to what most people consider an entree size. The quality of the food is excellent, and the service was helpful and friendly. It has a casual and relaxed ambience with a clean, modern decor. I live in the area and will definitely be back again. Pros: Great food, great service, and a nice decor Cons: None for me, but i guess the menu format could use more explaining more

Great decor, excellent service, could increase portion size 8/20/2006

Yes, the portions are small compared to other tapas places, but the food is well presented, the service is excellent, and the decor is very welcoming and comfortable. If they increase the portion sizes a bit and bring the prices more inline with other tapas places, Boqueria will have great potential. Pros: Great, attentive service. Very comfortable space. more

Waaayyy too pricey for the portions 8/19/2006

You would think that after spending over $160 for 4 people, you would be somewhat full and satisfied...think again. I have had tapas before but you can find better and cheaper places. The portions are nicely presented but you will find yourself asking if the portion of food for you is for an adult or a small child. For example, we ordered the the prosciutto and melon skewers for $6. What came was a tiny 4 inch skewer with 3 small pieces of prosciutto and melon. The server dropped it off at our table and said here are your skewers. We all looked at one another and agreed first of all that there was only one skewer and I wondered if the rest of the skewers rolled off the plate on its way to our table. Pros: Ambience Cons: Price and Portions more

  • The Scene
Compared to its famous namesake, a bustling Barcelona marketplace, this polished tapas place is quite the sophisticate. Ham ages artfully in the window, and a marble bar...
