Feeling a little old and creaky? 1/29/2010

I'm 55 and have been going to Body Mechanics for two years and have had sessions with most of the trainers. They have different strengths which helps me get a well-rounded program. All are professional, skilled trainers and a lot of fun. The classes are small and you get the attention you need to get the most out of your workout. The springboard and bosu classes are my favorite for overall conditioning. I feel stronger than I did at 45 and I've gained flexibility and balance that I have not had since my 20's! My posture has improved and I wouldn't be surprised if I'm an inch taller. I've quit every other program until I found pilates and this studio. I look forward to the classes every week. Thanks! Pros: Feel younger, stronger, more flexible more

Great massage with Carrie! 12/17/2009

Carrie is a great therapist! She is warm and attentive, she really cares about her clients, and her understanding of the body is impressive. She's really tying it together for me: stellar bodywork that is resolving old, chronic issues in my neck, shoulders and back while educating me about what is happening and how to support my health with stretches at home. Her Swedish/deep tissue massage is relaxing and perfectly deep and gentle in all the right places, and her Thai massage rocks my world! That is the thing to really work out the kinks.. no other treatment has been as effective in resolving my back pain. i'm excited to try a private with her next and learn more about pilates and yoga .. Pros: focused, transformational bodywork Cons: on the other side of town (for me) more

Great workout!! 3/29/2008

I had private sessions with Mandy during the 3rd trimester of my pregnancy. She was great!! She really knows her stuff. I had great workouts and I can't believe how much the sessions helped with back pain and other pregnancy related discomfort. Once I am in the swing of things with my new baby I plan on going in for more private sessions with her. I highly recommend Body Mechanics!! more

mandy's got eyes like a hawk 3/19/2008

Let's face it.....pilates looks easy....a few sit ups here, move your legs aroud a little there, wave your arms in the air....no problem. Well that's what I thought until I started taking pilates regularly at Body Mechanics. When you do pilates correctly, you find muscles you didn't know you had. And its NOT easy. And Mandy can spot you cheating a mile away. Taking pilates at BM with Mandy has been a huge educational experience about the weaknesses in my body and has helped me tremndously with strengthening my not-so-strong core muscles. I'm a dancer/athlete and I injured my back......I always thought I was superman, and altough I might appear strong on the outside, I've learned that I've got a long way to go to protect myself from injury. Mandy's helping me get there one mat class at a time. And best of all, she makes it fun. She's knowledgeable about your body, keeps you in line when she has to, but she's also just super cool and has an awesome sense of humor. I highly recommend this place. Pros: Southeast, Baby! more

Best Pilates Studio 3/14/2008

Body Mechanics is incredibly inviting, peaceful and clean. I have had a multitude of sessions with the owner Mandy Christiansen and I highly recommend her. She has become an irreplaceable teacher and healer in my life. Sessions with Mandy are so much more than just pilates (which is wonderful in itself). With her guidance i have become stronger, more flexible and better in touch with my body and self. I cannot say enough good things about this studio and its owner. Pros: To many to list. Cons: None. more

Kick-your-butt-pilates! 3/14/2008

I don't usually write reviews but feel compelled to after visiting Body Mechanics on my last trip to Portland. It is a beautiful studio in a great location, right on Hawthorne. It has a friendly environment and you feel welcome right after you walk in. Mandy (the owner) was my instructor, and I had both a private session and springboard class with her. She is very knowledgeable, with a keen eye on positioning and a good sense of humor. I was (and still am) pregnant and I felt totally safe in her hands. I felt worked out but not to the point of injury. I loved this place! Pros: good location, inviting studio, services more
