Don't DO it 8/13/2014

I took my Samson there in need of being put to sleep. After a long hard fight & a tearful goodbye I THOUGHT I could trust them to get THIS right. I made the appointment & walked him in so they KNEW we were coming & WHY. I'm in the room with Sam. The first leg they shave & the vet pokes & goes squirming around in his leg with the needle like a junkie! No joy he pokes the second leg a repeat of the first. at this point I'm thinking Jesus idiot why didn't you start a catheter to secure the vein in the first place third leg he hits the vein then rushes the shot & collapses the vein. at this point I'm livid & Sam is scared & knows something is going wrong. I put my arms around him to calm him while the "vet" went to get another shot. I looked at the tech & said this is going badly & even she said yes it is. The vet comes back in the room sticks the FOURTH leg & FINALLY gets the whole shot in. This was NOT a pet Sam was my SERVICE DOG I WILL NEVER WALK ANOTHER LIVING CREATURE INTO THIS OFF more

The vet will take his time to go through everything. I never feel rushed. I love that I get extra time to go through all my questions or concerns. They care about my dog as much as I do! more

Trustworthy and Caring 2/27/2012

I've taken my dog to Big Lake Area Veterinary Hospital for years! From shots, teeth cleanings to medications, everything has been great! Dr. Dutton is definitely one of the best veterinarians in the Big Lake area for sure! Everything is always answered in full detail and in a language that is understandable! He and his staff always follow up with any visits which makes me feel more comfortable too! Everyone has such a caring attitude! more

If you love your animal, don't go here! 2/8/2012

I've wanted to write this complaint yrs ago. Do not go to this clinic!!! I brought my dog there when he was 1 yr.old knowing something was terribly wrong with him. They did an exam and the vet told me that he must have allergys, which is causing the white foam he was coughing up and hard breathing. NO, it wasn't!! I took him home and a few hours later went to another vet because he could hardly breathe. Shortly after seeing a vet in Elk River (who saved his life), we were rushing to the UofM because my dog was in extreme heart failure with a heart 3 times larger than it should be and his lungs full of fluid. He was at the U for days and all the doctors he saw could not believe any vet would not see this. He was diagnosed with a heart diasese and lived many happy years due to great care from myself and others. I strongly suggest you never bring any animal to this clinic...I can't stress it more! more

You can not get any better than the service and care given at the Big Lake Vet Hosp. unless you go to their clinic in St. Micheal. Both of our labs have only gone there because of the excellant care and concern of the staff. We have have routine yearly check-ups, injuries and 4 surgeries of various types. I have had house calls late at night and when we had to put our 13 year old lab down, our vet came to the house for a more relaxing atmosphere for everyone. We have always gotten calls to check on our dogs when sick. How anyone can rate them less than I did has a problem. more

Outstanding Service 4/23/2010

I took my dog to Big Lake Area Vet Hospital to have his teeth cleaned. They took so good care of my dog. When my dog got sick I took him to Big Lake Area Vet Hospital. Our dog was dying and they were so kind went we had to put him to sleep. They answered all our questions before, during and at the end of the process of putting him to sleep. They were so good to us.\r We then brought our next dog that we got into them and again they did an outstanding job answering my many questions and they way the loved up my dog. more

Pretty good 1/25/2010

I have brought my Dog there several times for grooming and for vet services overall good experiences, one not so good. I am thinking it was more of a mis-communication more than anything. I have a Shihtzu and the groomer cut her hair very short in the winter making her very very cold, wasnt happy but i got over because she does do an excellent job at cutting the dogs hair and does look adorable. The vet is great, they have great technology. I had my dog tested for glaucoma which some vets dont do so i felt comfortable knowing they could perform this service. more

Big Lake Area Veterinary Hospital 12/19/2009

We've been using this clinic since they came to Big Lake as a spin-off of the St. Michael Vet (who we used for our sheep). Over the years, we've taken five dogs, two cats and a litter of pups to them, mostly Dr. McAlpin. We've always been pleased, although they, like any small animal clinic, get a little pricey. But that comes with good pet care. After one dog was put down at an emergency clinic and another at this clinic - both due to old age - we received beautiful cards of condolence. I highly recommend the clinic. more

Thank you Big Lake Area Veterinary Hospital 10/14/2009

I am new to the area and found my experience at the Big Lake Area Veterinary Hospital to exceed my expectations. From the front office staff to the techs, they seemed to know my pooch from the moment I walked in. My pooch had long suffered from diarrhea with out another Vet being able to find a cause. The Vet I saw was very pleasant and helped my wade through all the medical jargon so that we could get my puppy better. THANKS SO MUCH. more

Big Lake Area Veterinary Hosp is a killer 9/26/2009

About a month ago I took my dog to this clinic, well if I could call it a clinic. My dog enter that place walking, after they took X-rays he wasn't able to walk and bark, I ask the doctor (if I can call him a Doctor) why my dog was not able to walk, he said is because the stress he suffered when the X-rays were taken but he was going to be fine. I took my dog for a second opinion, they said my dog was not going to walk again, he was paralyzed they don't know about the barking. I know they did something to my dog in that clinic. Please don't take your pets there. more

Big Lake Area Veterinary Hosp is a killer 9/25/2009

My dog wasn't feeling so good one day so I took him in to get checked. They asked me to wait outside the room so I did. When they told me I could come in my dog was in worse shape then when he came in. They told me he would be fine and that some of the tests that they did on him caused him some stress on his injury. He apparently had a broken leg. But before I came in nothing was wrong with his legs! I asked the doctor how could this happen? He had no answer. I took my dog to a different vet and they said that the broken leg has been like that only for a few days. I took him in only a few days after I had taken him in with the Big Lake Area Veterinary Hospital. If you are thinking of visiting here I would think twice! If you love your animal don't go there! more

animal mon 3/12/2009

Have been using BIg Lake Vet clinic on the advise of a friend since 2005. Have received fantastic care of all my pets since then. The staff is knowledgeable and caring and pays close attention to the waiting room to keep altercations to a zero level. I drive almost 25 miles one way to take my pets to the Big Lake Vet Clinic and would gladly drive twice that distance for the care we receive there. Dr. Baetsel is flat wonderful and truly knowledgeable as well as kind and absolutely concerned about the animals he treats. I would recommend this clinic to anyone within a 100 mile radius! more

Big Lake vet 9/14/2008

I have been taking my dogs to them for 10 years. I will not go anywhere else. The vets are great and the other staff are great too. I am very happy with the service I have gotten. more

Good vet care 6/20/2006

I have taken both my dogs here regularly. The vet techs are patient and friendly, the vets will spend as much time as you need for questions.\r My only negative was that one receptionist gave me a dirty look when I said that I had had my dog debarked. PROS: Good service, caring. CONS: waiting area right next to door, hard to do with big dog! more

Cat emergency 1/7/2006

This is a great Vet Hospital. They were not my usual vet but when an emergency came up, I called them and they accepted my cat immediately. The cost was very reasonable and I was very satisfied with their care of me and my cat. I plan on using them as my regular vet for the future. PROS: Took me in as a new patient immediately CONS: more
