I searched the Portland area extensively for several months looking for good/very good quality cabinets at low prices. It took a while to get well calibrated on what various pieces would cost and what construction details were important, and ultimately Best Cabinet and Granite Supply had the best deal.They focus on only several different cabinet lines (eg. American Cherry Shaker, Dark walnut, Light Birch, etc), but they carry the full line of matching trim, spacers, toe kicks, and crown molding.That was important to us as we chose the American cherry Shaker - a beautiful brown/red wood and now everything associated with the installation matches. You will have to do your own install ( or get a contractor) as they do not install. They also carry inexpensive granite and do the finishing work for that , but we have not looked into granite yet.
The owner, Shelly, is an energetic and professional and made concessions for our needs easily (eg. we wanted glass windows in the wall units and that required some special handling... but no additional charge! Her prices are very good and she adds a discount to that. While shopping there I have overheard her talk with other customers on the phone and it reaffirmed my view that she is very service oriented. One customer put the handle holes in the wrong place and Shelly offered to try and fill and refinish the holes - the more costly alternative would be to reorder new doors.
The cabinets we just received from her are georgeous and we have had no issues. The assembly is first class (screws, wood staples, and glue provide a strong box).The face of the cabinets is 3/4"" solid hardwood (cherry in our case), the front frame is 3/4 cherry, and box is made out of 5/8 multi-ply plywood- this box is built to last. The shelves are made from solid wood - no particle board in these cabinets- anywhere. the drawers ( and we opted for drawers in all base units) are hardwood sides, plywood bottom and have dove tailed corners... a real quality touch. The units that have external drawers have the auto-close feature where the drawer is pulled closed by itself, another high end feature.
We are very pleased with our experience here and would be happy to share that with others. We fully expect to come back again for a set for our other house
