bernies slightly better than your mom's basement 2/20/2011

Bernies well. The food is okay I prefer a rueban with a little more dresing but it's good. The deli side is nice and motly clean ,it's non smoking and the cooks look clean ,L.A. clean that is. At first the place will look good to you drawing in the local students as a deli with a bar , a bar that serves beer (duh) and has a satge. I guess thats what you call the thing in the corner. No my experinces at bernies was not as happy or enjoyable as the other reviews and I think that might have to do with the seecret circles in Columbus promoting itself. First there is no matter what time you go to a gig or show or people playing something like music 9depends what night) always a puddle of urine in the back hallway luckily I dont have to use the mens room and I decided never to use the ladies room again. I heard that puddle is part of the local scene now . The bands that play there are hit or mis and i wonder exactly how much take home pay the bands get when the regulars come in the back door without getting charged. The sound guy seems to do his job well when he is actualy in the siund room not smoking or chugging beers down and i got a look at the equipmen a few times and man better bring your own ,thats if they let you .I dont underand what a band is thinking in such a tiny litle urine smelling room playing music so loud with such bad accoustics that the only people that can make anything out are the people outside smoking on the patio not listening to you because they are about to play there music or about to go to a house party.I would not recommnd this place to any band and unless you already ike the band or just wanna get super drunk and scream find another spot. But since some really col people have played through there and I seem to keep going there once a month i give it two stars like i said it' better than your moms basement more

Willie and the Lads heartily approved. . . . 7/5/2007

If Casablanca had Rick's Cafe for Bogart to hold court, Columbus has Bernie's for the artists/musicians to see/play/and be seen. The likes of Willie Phoenix and other veteran rockers of the scene, with top fresh talent, that surely you will say "I saw them back when" about one day, all assemble here. A not to be missed classic on OSU campus. See you around Fall 07, ciao!! Joey Brozenick S. Florida Pros: Mecca of rockers Cons: Parking more

Bernie's Rocks 6/12/2002

I've loved Bernie's since I was a teen and they were playing the Who on the soundsystem (hey, it was retro even then). Went back recently, and nothing had changed -- even the soundtrack. Always a great experience, great ambiance -- the band doesn't even have to be good for it to be a great time. more

Editorial
  • The Scene
One-half bagel and coffee joint, one-half gritty bar, the Distillery has long been the underground club (literally and figuratively) where many local bands first cut their teeth. If some street credibility is what you're looking for, the Distillery is one place it currently resides.

    The Sounds
Performances happen seven nights a week on the postcard-sized stage by locals as well as a plethora of regional and national touring acts The diminutive size of the club belies the enormity of some of the talent that's been booked. Yes, Beck played there. Any music can happen, but indie rock is the most prevalent flavor.

    The Food
All the basic staples of a cheap deli are here: bagels (obviously), coffee, muffins and other quick fuel. At night, the shop is a good place to take a respite when the concrete music room gets too crowded or too loud.
