This man is visibly unhappy as if he's in the wrong profession. Sexist. His logic is not logical. I can see why people would dislike him. Throws things ""off the cuff"" including your diagnosis. Fast to make a diagnosis? It's possibly wrong. Hardened in every way. Showed no empathy. Doesn't mind seeming rude and uncivil. I have no evidence of his intelligence. One-trick pony. Gives psychiatry a bad name. Imitates Lacan, but to no advantage. People are too easily impressed with a ""cowboy"" image. No depth there. Just keeping slinging those pills. more

An Intelligent but, Sometimes, Egotistic Man 2/19/2012

After a year of unsuccessful diagnosis at a Family Doctor Clinic, I decided to try a psychiatrist; and ended up being appointed to the well-reputable Dr. Berner. At the first clinic, he gave me the low-down of all his knowledge about bipolarity. Oh boy, he seemed like he knew his sh** alright! He threw down a med for me to try (called Lamotrigine), however it didn't seem to do much. A month later, it's my next clinic. He puts me on another med, Lithium. This one finally did the trick in combination with Lamotrigine. It was like I finally struck gold!! Although, every-so-often I'd get terrible migraine's. So for it, he hit me with another med, Verapamil. However, I told him I was unsure about the new one because I still had a depressive episode two weeks ago. Plus the fact that I haven't felt normal in three years! Anyways, he told me ""Trust me, I'm a doctor and you'll be getting migraine's regardless."" I eventually agreed. So here I am, a week after taking Verapamil and I just feel straight up depressed. His humbleness took me off the wrong street. So I'm just going to stop taking it. Like sometimes he'll act like some ""mad scientist"" knowing everything, but really he's a human like you and I. However for the most part, he's a real smart guy. 4/5 rating. more

Complex Brilliant Psychiatrist 12/16/2011

Dr. Berner is eccentric, challenging at times, and brilliant. He cares about his patients but he will not tolerate bull and he does not suffer fools gladly. I have to say that he has helped me out over the past 5 years and intervened to help save my marriage. My husband is very grateful and also sees him now too. He can really be annoying when he is having a bad day. But he tells you up front that he is having a bad day. I value his expertise, honesty, and caring. He is willing to try new things and gives the patient a lot of control and responsibility over their care. Seems that people either love him or hate him. I think he's the best. more

Refreshingly straight-up & No BS 11/27/2011

Gotta say Dr Berner was 1 of only 3 docs few years back certified to prescribe Suboxone and altho I tried a lower dose and disappointed before- he stated= No wonder.....I was waaaay undermedicated for my tolerance. Let me just say that the FIRST DAY I took the proper dosage, (after 10yrs of painful addiction, methadone treatment with horrible side effects, 2 months cold turkey and a 40# weight loss, I almost gave up on life) that was the day of my rebirth and I must say-IT WAS LIKE I never had an addiction!! I was back!!! Not to mention I have owed this man $$ and NOT once has he complained or threatened collections, he is now a priority and being paid off. I thank god for Dr Berner and I am very confident in his love and compassion for fellow humans, even addicts. Bless my Doc Berner!!! more

Very best experience, a life saver! 7/11/2011

After years of counceling, rehashing all the ""bad things"" that have happened in my life, and not getting anywhere, I am so grateful my family practitioner sent me to see Dr. Berner. I had a good first visit, talked about benefits of taking meds vs. their side-effects, and counceling vs. pharm. therapy. I was terrified of being labeled. This imprisoning ""label"" still has not, 4 years later, happened with Dr. Berner. He allows room in my treatment for me to change and ride out the rough spots, adjust things when we need to, but mostly, helps me see with every visit that I am getting better. Life is finally stable, not perfect, not easy, but the rollercoaster is over. Dr. Berner has some quirks, but so do I. It makes him more approachable to me. He is a real person, good and bad days, but I hope if you are looking for a psychiatrist who knows meds, and is actually experienced and educated enough to make a starting diagnosis and give you something to help right away, then adjust as you come to know each other, please try this doctor. He has been in Woodinville for a long time and works with Evergreen paging system, so can be reached immediately by pharmacist for those occasional hiccups. His receptionist is now there during the day, I can't think of a time in the last couple years when I have not had a call returned same-day. I have read these reviews before, but never wrote one until now. I just had to help a teen who was is crisis, and took him to Dr. Berner. I was worried about medicating, as he is still going through puberty, but Dr. Berner was not only able to get through this boy's quills, but has changed his life. He can now listen, filter, and control his impulses for the first time since I've known him! It is night and day! Dr. Berner knew what to do for him, was bold and confident and RIGHT!! What may seem cocky, or brash to some reviewers is an education and more importantly an experience level that may not have an equal on the eastside. That cannot be more necessary when working with brain chemistry and pharmaceuticals. If you are looking for a knowledgeable, amazingly experienced psychiatrist, Dr. Jon Berner is your man. If you want eastside cushions and coddling, lattes and ego strokes, go to a councelor. more

Horrible Experience Dont Go To Him!!!!! 9/14/2010

When i walked into his office i was the only one in the little waiting room and he walked by me about 4 times and said nothing to me. Then he told me to come into his office and he was lookin at his text messages half the time and the other half he was asking me questions and then cutting me off while i was answering. He would go on these little tangents about people who he has helped. I left with a perscription for ADHD medication and he told me to take 3. When i went and got my priscription the pharmacy say that they have never seen someone pricribed this much. So i stared taking 1 and i didnt see anything happen and so i decided to take 2 and my body freaked out and i felt so sick. I called Berners emergency line to talk to him and he told me that i was fine and that it was stupid of me to call the emergency line and was so rude. I will never be going back to him. more

Best so far 8/18/2009

After having visited multiple psychiatrists, Dr. Berner was the only one who seemed capable of trying something that could work. Previous ones, kept trying the same classes of meds over and over, even though they had failed dozens of times. Dr. Berner was the 1st person to acknowledge this reality & was also able to read into my situation well. A previous reviewer stated that he was ""extremely rude & arrogant"" I don't think this is the case at all, he just speaks his mind, which is hard to bear considering some many Psychiatrists are unwilling to say anything that would ""offend"" their patients regardless of its accuracy . If you are a hypersensitive individual who can't bear the idea of somebody being real with you, to the point that it takes precedent over your own health...then go elsewhere. He has said things to me that someone might consider ""offensive"". If your business is to go around being offended by everyone, in the sense that people watch Disney movies looking for some little thing to protest or send a complaint about, but other than that, it's not really an issue. For everyone else, I would recommend 5 stars, it helped that I was also honest about everything in my situation to. Pros: Honest, Helpful Cons: None so far more

Tried to lead me down the wrong path... 6/14/2009

My therapist for ADD referred me to John. For the first 15 mins of our meeting, he had his back at me. I intently listened and was asking questions. It wasn't until he told me I was TOO hyper and interrupting him too often, which made me feel irritated. He asked me to take a bi-polar medication to help me sleep better which should in turn help me concentrate more. It gave me migraines, visual sensitivity, and set me back several days at school. I called John and explained that I would like to be reevaluated for ADD. He turned it down and asked that I bring my spouse with me to another appt claiming that’s what “a good wife would do” and claimed that I was being stubborn. I asked him to talk to my ADD therapist as an alternative option, of which he was extremely rude and arrogant with as well. Since then, I have not gone back for obvious reasons. I went and saw a new psychiatrist in Juanita who put me on an ADD prescription and two weeks later my test scores went up significantly (almost 15%). I really wish John would have listened and not have been so rude. He wasted my time and I’m so happy I didn’t waste my spouse’s time in the process. I’m sure my therapist will reconsider sending patients his way and I would highly recommend that you do the same, or at least do your research first and bring it with you to the meeting. A doctor should be someone who is willing to take the time to listen and not judge so quickly. I wanted to take the time and share my experience, because I would hate to see anyone put on the wrong medication like myself and be made to feel incompetent. Pros: Knowledgeable, location, clean office, Cons: Overbearing, unresponsive, poor manners more

a good doctor with a complicated bedside manner 5/1/2009

Dr. Berner is no doubt a very bright, eccentric but talented psychiatrist. The first time my daughter went to see him, he asked her some loaded questions about her use of alcohol and some irrelevant, personal questions but she didn't get intimidated and in the end he has been nothing but helpful and cooperative. He gets very high marks from our pharmacist and my therapist. Pros: He is open to all avenues of treatment and medication Cons: He can test you more

Not a good experience 4/24/2009

I went to dr.berner with concerns about my attention span and the possibility of having adhd. While there he asked if I ever experienced muscle pain, I said that I sometimes had neck pain, but that this was the result of a car accident from 2007. Without any other info, he decided that my pain was not from my injury, but instead a psychological problem. After discussing my family health history, he referred to my father's heart condition as my ""death sentence""... I am in my early 20's. His lack of tact or professionalism offended me. It concerned me that he felt he could diagnose an injury with no other information about the situation, and refused to hear otherwise. I will not be returning. more

AWESOME suboxone/ psych doctor 3/23/2009

I have only had one appointment with Dr. Berner so far, but I had seen several Sub doctors previous to him. On my first appointment he assessed me to the T, asked a million questions, and actually listened to what I had to say. He switched up my meds, which was a great decision, and made sure that I knew all of the side effects to the new medications as well as the effects. \r I also don't have insurance and not only is he very affordable he took that into account and helped me save money with my perscriptions. I would reccomend him to anyone, and have, and I have heard only good things from the friends that I recommended him to. If anyone is looking for an amazing doctor for Subs, or a graet psychologist I would suggest him 100%. I was so impressed by him I also dropped my old psych. Pros: Insightful, Smart, Cons: Can't think of any as of yet more

Awful 12/12/2008

I wish I had seen the Dr. Berner that everyone else has talked about. He was not so kind to me. \r \r In our first visit, when asked how I heard of him, I mentioned a positive review I had read online. We then spent the next 15 minutes talking about that review. What did it say? Where did I find it? At the end of that visit, he sent me home with 3 prescriptions, and got visibly exasperated when I asked questions about what each pill did. \r \r On our next visit (the last visit), he made an inappropriate joke and laughed, called me stupid for running out of the prescription he wrote me, gave me 6 new prescriptions (that's not an exaggeration), and kicked me out of his office saying that he was having a bad day. I never went back. \r \r I wanted to get my review out here too, in case someone else has gone through something similar to what I have. I hope he really is a good doctor like everyone has said, and I truly hope no one else has experienced the side of him that I saw. more

An Outstanding Physician 10/16/2008

Dr. Jon Berner literally saved my life. Prior to meeting Dr. Berner, I was hopeless and ready to give up on life for several reasons. First, not only do I suffer from multiple psychiatric disorders, but I also have Lupus and OA (very painful and debilitating illnesses). Second, I had been suicidal and in and out of hospitals for several years with unsuccessful treatments. I attempted to find a private physician to treat my psychiatric disorders. The search was very discouraging because I am a recipient of Medicare; I was unable to find a doctor to treat me. I became distraught, afraid, and frustrated (because of being rejected time after time). Needless to say, this experience only exacerbated my unstable condition. \r \r I called Evergreen Physician Referral Service and I was referred to Dr. Jon Berner. Dr. Berner did not hesitate to take me on as his patient. Dr. Berner?s expertise is psychiatry; however, he is such a caring individual, he also accepted me and other patients with Lupus. Dr. Berner's treatment of my mental and emotional illnesses has stabilized me and, for the most part, I am now living a more productive life. I am a devout Christian and I truly believe that the Lord united me with Dr. Berner. I am confident that he provides me with best quality care possible. I would highly recommend Dr. Jon Berner as one of the top physicians in the Pacific Northwest. He is honest, caring, concerned and will do his very best for his patients. Dr. Berner, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continuing excellent care and concern.\r \r Nina Morris\r more

Amazingly Refreshing, Brilliant and Compassionate 5/22/2008

Dr. Berner is very refreshing after years of feeling ""Is anybody hearing me?"" He takes the time to listen to you, talk to you, and at every appointment I feel he's always adding pieces to the puzzle. My first visit felt as if someone lifted the burden off my shoulder, as he ""got it."" He acknowledged what was happening was real and from that point I could now move forward. As one reviewer stated he is not quick to put labels on people. He's also not hesitant to try new things and suggest alternatives. I feel like it's my life, I'm in charge, and he's asking how he can work with you to help you have a better quality of life. He's worked with our family and it makes a difference to have someone know the dynamics. His response time in returning a phone call is the best I've had on a consistent basis. No question is a stupid question. And, when you do ask questions, he is straight forward and will educate you. Pros: On time, quick response, can get an appointment when you need one. Cons: If you feel it's too far to drive, it's not. It's worth the drive. more

Fun, Brilliant, Insighful, and a bit Quirky 12/7/2007

If you enjoy a fast paced, highly insightful experience then Dr. Berner is for you. His ability to recall details and make bold and accurate statements and pronouncements based on spending only a short time recounting your personal and family history is impressive. I've been going to him now for over a year and a half and I always come away with greater self understanding and a smile on my face. He is very diligent and helpful and willing to try new things. He is also a lot of fun to talk with and he is an excellent educator. He is not real keen on putting labels on behaviors and symptoms and for some that might be frustrating but I find it refreshing. Pros: Insightful, great educator, innovative, very talented. Cons: Makes his own appointments and does not have office help. Not a big con but frustrating sometimes. more

--Be yourself: Write like you'd talk to a friend. Are you a burrito expert? Was this your first massage? Say so. \r Think local: Mention the neighborhood and nearby attractions. \r Play fair: Don't hold burger joints to the same standards as four-star restaurants. \r Be specific: ""Perfectly crisp pizza crust"" is more helpful than ""tasty food"". \r Give details: Specialty menu items?
