A manicure and a cocktail 6/15/2006

Want to go out with friends, but you're tired of the same old bars and clubs? Check out Beauty Bar, where you'll feel like you fell into a time warp. This cocktail lounge is styled as a fifties beauty parlor, complete with manicure tables and hair dryers. And during their happy hour, for ten dollars you can get a manicure and one of their signature cocktails. more

When it's Good, it's Very Good. When it's Crowed....Not so Much 5/28/2006

This Mission-hipster institution is hit and miss for me. When it's crowded, I have to say, it can suck. Its small, rectangular layout isn't so fun when people are packed in belly to belly. While I avoid weekend nights at all costs, the music is usually some version of 80's fabulous and when it's a little slower, it's a great place to grab a pint and chill and catch up with a friend or two. Perhaps the best part -- the black and white photo booth in the back corner that, for the bargain price of $3 will provide you with a strip of four photographic momentos of your drunken exploits. more

Beauty Bar 4/27/2006

The Beauty Bar is one of my least favorite places in San Francisco. The shape of the place drives me crazy. That long, narrow stretch along the bar where you can try to stand or fight it out to get noticed to buy a crappy, overpriced drink, all the while getting pummeled by people trying to push in and out. So, you can either go stand outside and get some fresh air with the smokers (smart move) or push all the way to the back, into the the little dance space. Now, you're trapped, pushed up against the too-loud speakers blasting 80's music, which is why your friends dragged you there in the first place. Ugh. more

Beauty Bar 8/2/2005

Beauty Bar is a good solid bar. It's got a great feeling to it... you have the choice of couches by the window, sitting at the bar, or an upstairs loungey area. They have a pretty wide variety of drinks (the beers are a tad pricey for me at $4.50 a pint), and there's usually a very good crowd there. I have had some great times and met a lot of great people at Beauty Bar. If you're in the Haight-Ashbury area and not looking for a really hip hipster scene, check out Beauty Bar. You won't be disappointed. more

Beauty Bar 8/1/2005

Beauty Bar is an Inexpensive hair salon on Mission Street. The owner does a wonderful shampoo. Nice staff, good location, extremely inexpensive. This isn't the fanciest hair salon or the most upscale, but they get the job done. And you do end up with a cokkie-cutter cut but for the money - it is worth it. more

Truth Is Beauty 4/24/2005

Cuticles looking a little ragged? Thirsty for a retro-coiffed (but not retro-priced) cocktail? Mission Street's Beauty Bar is your consummate destination. Launched last year by the geniuses who renovated a '60s hair salon in Manhattan, the City's Beauty Bar is a fun, if not quite as authentic, take on bouffant glam. And on Wednesday nights, the venue offers roaming manicurists, making this a pink-vinyl haven in the heart of the Mission corridor. When's the last time you heard yourself say, "Give me a double Aqua Net, and file 'em short and square"? more
