First off, I'm not sure what the deal is with all of these reviews. I was referred to Bearj by one of my friends who is the pickiest person I know. I got 2 cuts at that salon, first with Jystina (I think that was her name), and then July 2008 Bearj cut my hair. He was never rude. Never said a bad thing that would make me question his ethics. I read the reviews on this site and was a little apprehensive about going to Bearj Antonio. My cousin recommended the place because she said there was a really good colorist there named Ana. I found the location to be near my house, and when I walked in, the salon was packed. Ana greeted my very professionally, and when I told her I wanted to go blonde from my black (box dyed) hair, she explained the entire coloring process and told me we had to go gradually. We decided that we would start with highlights, so Ana got right to work. She was very attentive and didn't talk too much (like some people often do), but was nonetheless very polite and friendly. I walked out of the salon with terrific color and was extremely satisfied with the results. I highly recommend going to Ana for color. The only downside is the price ($120 for a full head), but this is comparable if not less expensive than a lot of other salons in the area. I decided to go to Bearj after reading the reviews, because even the people who said he was arrogent said he gives great haircuts. I can deal with arrogent - I'm out of there quickly enough - but my hair stays with me! The first time I went there, Bearj looked at my hair and told me to grow it out a bit and come back in a month. I was astounded and very impressed. That's the first experience I've had with a hairdresser refusing to do what I want (and thus getting money from me) and rather doing what was right for me! When I went back after a month, Bearj gave me a haircut that seemed just okay at first, but it's been another month since then and my hair is looking fabulous (and has been for the last 2 weeks). That's the true test of a haircut - does it grow out well? And my hair was so layered and bushy before - the result of many bad haircuts - that Bearj warned me that it may take some growing out (with good cuts at regular intervals) to get it right. Not that it matters too much, but I found Bearj easy to chat with, and everyone there quite friendly. Reports that the place is dirty are simply unfounded. I read some reviews before going for my appointment with Bearj. To my defense, some reviews were positive. Now I'm guessing they are probably writing the good reviews themselves to boost their rating. It was not a good experience. Bearj was a as arrogant as most of the negative reviewers claim. His girls (shampoo girls and receptionists) kept talking to each other while taking care of me, which I found rude. When I asked for a cup of coffee-they told me they were out. They didn't even offer anything else to drink instead--for $60.00/haircut you'd think they'd be more professional. They kept pressuring me to get additional services I didn't want. I left dissapointed. Sorry to say-won't recommend this salon to any of my friends. more

THIS IS THE WORST SALON I EVER CAME TO. THE OLD OWNER BEARJ ANTONIO HIMSELF IS SO ARROGANT, AND DISGUSTING. I COULD NOT BEGIN TO TELL YOU HOW RACISIT HE IS TOO. I AM SITTING IN HIS CHAIR AND HE IS LITERALLY MAKING FUN OF JEWISH PEOPLE AND RUSSIANS AND BLACKS RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. HE MADE JOKES ABOUT DIFFERENT RACES AND I THOUGHT I WAS SITTING IN A SKINHEADS CHAIR, I WAS AMAZED THAT SOMEONE WOULD EVEN HAVE THE GUTS TO SAY THE THINGS HE SAID. HE THINKS WAY TOO HIGHLY OF HIMSELF AND IS A MAJOR STORYTELLER, TRYING TO GET THROUGH ONE OF HIS HAIRCUTS IS TORTURE. HE CALLS HIMSELF THE HAIR MASTER AND MY CUT WAS HORRIBLE, WAS NOT WORTH 60.00. I went to the salon this past weekend and was very dissapointed with the employees and with the owner. My first impression was that this salon was very well manicured. It looked pretty inside. But that does not mean that the quality of the staff is any good. I didn't like my haircut and didn't love the color. Services are extremely overpriced. I would not recommend this salon to anybody. more

Walking into the salon was amazing. Everything was clean and eye-opening. I was greeted as soon as I walked in and with a smile... When I first met the colorist, Ana, she seemed very professional and ready to get to work. I explained what I had envisioned and it was as if she knew exactly what I pictured in my head. When I was brought back to the shampoo bowl, I have to admit I was nervous to see what it was like with a new colorist. Afterwards Gwen had taken me for my haircut and I was really looking for something new. After her blowdry I never thought I could be happier with anything in my life. THe color was perfect, as well as the cut. I would recommend this salon to everyone. Pros: just an overall great experience more

i personally have worked at bearj antonio salon and spa, and i dont know what these people are talking about when they say that bearj is rude or ignorant. i loved working for him, he was so much fun and one of the most caring boss's i could have ever asked for. yeah he has sarcasam and jokes a lot, and is loud, but he is fun. people take things too seriously, lighten up. he is really good hairstylist, and eddie is a great colorist. i still get my hair done there, and they hired a new wonderful colorist who is very talented, and another hairstylist. so people need to stop badmouthing the salon, they don't know the truth or what goes on behind close doors, like i do. its really also not that expensive, you get what you pay for. you want a cheap decent cut then go to hair cuttery. A girl who used to cut my hair left becuse BearJ the owner was rude to her just like all of his other staff members...So I decided to get a hair cut from a newere girl and it wasa HORRIBLE experience...First of all when she sampood my hair, she got shampoo in my eye, then when she was parting my hair she pinched my hair with a butterfly clip and didn't even know until I said something..She chopped my hair off really fast, he seemed very nerveous like she didn't know what she was doing. We moved to Buffalo Grove many years ago and found Bearj Antonio salon 4 years ago. Initially, we went to Bearj to get our nails done by Rita, a Russian-Armenian nail technician. She introduced us to Bearj and Eddie and we started to get our haircuts at the salon. My sister and I enjoyed the haircuts but every time the price seemed just a lot more than we wanted to pay. Last year, Rita left the salon because she got in yet another fight with Bearj. Both my sister and I stopped going to the salon because we love the way she does our nails. I've seen Bearj be verbally abusive to his employees and to several clients (I don't think they are clients anymore). Rita, like many other employees, moved on. So did we. I would not recommend this salon. Sure, Bearj does a good job. But so do many many other stylists in the area. Go to Norma at AF salon across the street--three times cheaper and better than at Bearj's. Oh, and I hate when people that do my hair don't speak English to others while taking care of me. So I walk in to the salon expecting the service to be good and high end. The owner of the salon is some older man who thinks he is the best stylist in the world....So, the whole time he was cutting my hair he was talking about himself and being very rude to his staff, almost abusive.
