Catchy name 8/23/2011

I have been here three times, & horribly disappointed. I dont know if there is more than one cook but OMG the salmon patties stick to your teeth and are gummy with NO taste, packed with flour, too thick, no eggs, onions or bellepepper. The salmon steak had to be covered in gumbo and it was just AWEFUL, with a slimy skin coverning the entire bottom, & the red beans and rice --where did that recipe come from, zataran's in the box beats the heck out of what we got. The wait staff did just that WAIT. The only redeeming part was being served the yummy cornbread basket when we were seated only much much later, to be impaled by the lackluster NO SOUL FOOD dishes. The cooks need some serious lessons in what soul food cooking is. With all of the people in this city who can throw down in the kitchen, a contest should be held to at least find someone who can do some justice to ""Beans and Cornbread"" I had guest here from Alabama, we just left our food only 1/10 eaten on the plate and went in search of food elsewhere. Hot sauce couldnt help it. We will not be going back. Wow how embarassing more

This place should be take-out only! 11/15/2008

It is not worth sitting down and eating this stuff they call food! i would not consider this food to be anything close to ""soul-food"". It is just food. I have been with friends about 10 times in total and 9 times out of the 10, the service has always been bad for different reasons. The lobby is non-existent. You just wait in some chairs in the front of the restaurant and just watch the people eat until they are through with their lunch/dinner. There is nothing original or special about their food. This place has had years to improve on the menu, but it never gets better. The fried chicken and greens are bland, the mac and cheese taste pasty. I did have the steak once and it was really good, but I had to send it back the first time because they over-cooked it (not to my specifications). Basically, this is a bad attempt at adding flare to down home, southern cooking and then add on poor service with a very-tight dinning area. Save your money and time. Pros: The steak Cons: non-existent lobby, sloppy and poor service, bland food more

VERY GOOD FOOD 7/27/2005

I have been to Beans And Cornbread at least a dozen times, because I can't find better soul-food. The service is pleasing complete with an open door welcome and a friendly staff. I usually order the salmon patties, and the taste is new and slightly gourmet. They also have a real nice lunch menu, they have earned an A+ in my class. Pros: nice location, quick carryout Cons: small dining area more

A ""true"" soulfood experience!! 6/8/2004

I must say the food is on the high side of calories, if you're weight concious. But if you want true flavor, and good taste, this is the place!!! I can only compare this to my OWN cooking!! Some of the treats are very tasty! But if you eat all you're served, better be prepared to work it off!! One bad fault: NO LOW CARB MEALS!!! Pros: good service, free drink refills, Nice ambience Cons: , sometimes crowded more

W O W! 3/7/2003

Best soulfood around. The service is great, the food is delicious, and they even cater. Had them for a Christmas luncheon at work - never ate so much at work before, the mac and cheese leaves your mouth watering for more....... Gotta check it out!!! Pros: Good Parking, Service Excellent, Excellent Food more

Disgusting food 11/25/2002

This place is not worth all the hype. My food was half cooked and it was not worthy my money. The food was roo salty. more

NEVER EAT HERE WITHOUT A DOCTOR ON CALL 11/11/2002

WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL WITH THIS PLACE??? TOO MANY PEOPLE JUMPING ON THE BAND-WAGON JUST TO BE IN THE ""IN"" CROWD. WHAT A DEAL: FOOD TOOO SALTY/CHALKY/DISGUSTING, LITTLE CARE FOR PORTION CONSISTENCY, NOT WORTH THE PRICE. A HEARTATTACK IN THE MAKING....IF NOT FROM THE FOOD THEN FROM THE PRICE. Pros: I MADE IT OUT Cons: SALTY, CHALKY, CROWDED more

The Country Yuppie Cooks Great! 9/23/2002

My first visit was Sunday 9/22/02. I was very impressed with the professional staff. We were greeted and seated imediately. The food was served hot and very tasty. The quantity fit the price. It truly is good ole fashion cooking with a yuppie atmosphere that's very tastefully elegant. more
