Great place to people watch! Excellent food which is ultra healthy and flavorful. Any night of the week a great place to enjoy your dinner.

I used to love Barbounia. Sadly, they've changed their menu--and not for the good. They had over twenty ouzos at the bar. Their menu of mezzes, classic Greek dishes and grilled se...

excellent food 7/20/2009

Threw a birthday dinner party for my boyfriend here. Service and food was fantastic. Everyone had a wonderful time. Will definitely return. Pros: best Greek salad ever more

ALL AROUND GREAT PLACE 7/15/2009

I love the feeling this place has when you walk in. Also the Turkish/Greek/Italian Mediterranean food is such a nice change and everthing I've had was delicious. For apps the Red Snapper Ceviche and Terracotta Shrimp are my favorites. Favorite entrees are Farro Rissoto and the Hanger Steak. Dessert is heavenly with the Silan Honey OMG or the Kanafeh ~ MUST TRY. Pros: Atmosphere, Food and Fun People Cons: Haven't found one yet. more

Great Food, Great Time 7/15/2009

The other night I went out with a group of friends to Barbounia and we had a FANTASTIC time - great cocktails a great atmosphere. The food is scrumptious - the octopus is out of this world. It's great for big groups for sharing all the delicious plates. I think I tasted everything on the menu and all of it was EXCELLENT. And, they have this incredible dessert called Silan - it's to die for, so you must try it! Pros: Love the Charred Octopus Cons: None more

I've always found the service staff to be on top of things and that says alot these days. I really recomend this restaurant if you want to experience something better than the usual venues. Couldn't Be More Beautiful 7/13/2009

The sheer awe you will be in when you walk into this restaurant is enough to make the meal worth it in my opinion, however appearance alone is not all you have to look forward to when going to dine at Barbounia. The food was an interesting complex burst of flavor in everything from the hummus to the bread that was presented perfectly. Pros: The Food Tastes as good as the restaurant looks more

The food was an interesting complex burst of flavor in everything from the hummus to the bread that was presented perfectly. The service was attentive and respectful without being over-bearing and annoying. I honestly was upset when dessert came around, but i really didn't want to leave. I can't wait to go back soon! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Pros: The Food Tastes as good as the restaurant looks more

Rude Bartender 7/1/2009

The bartender was incredibly rude. She was really tall, short blonde hair. When I asked her to please close my tab and let me pay for my drinks, she kept asking me if I wanted to "pay for my friends drinks", and I said no, multiple times. However, when she finally gave me the bill, she did add my friend's drink to it. Why would a bartender pressure you to pay for someone else's drink? So frustrating. more

Try harder 5/24/2009

Add an hour to your reservation time. This ostentatious Mediteranean restaurant has a great feeling when you walk in but it goes down hill very quickly from there. Poor service, pretty bad food (my chicken was burnt to a crisp and an arrogant Narcissistic attitude is so yesterday... . Get over yourself. Pros: 'drecoration' Cons: Rude and lazy service more

Poor service, pretty bad food (my chicken was burnt to a crisp and an arrogant Narcissistic attitude is so yesterday... . Get over yourself. I had way better food and service elsewhere.. Good luck with your party tonight. $50 is steep for what will be provided. Who did the interior.. Beautiful! Pros: 'drecoration' Cons: Rude and lazy service more

Great food, service and DRINKS! 4/7/2009

Such a pretty place, the dining room is lit almost entirely by candle light, the staff was most friendly and helpful. A MUST try is the lamb shank, the meat just fell off the bone! The shrimp terra cotta (although not in a terra cotta dish) was the most yummy garlicy shrimp dish EVER! Pros: spreads and breads...wow! Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

The shrimp terra cotta (although not in a terra cotta dish) was the most yummy garlicy shrimp dish EVER! Went back for brunch and got blissfully happy on the $12 ALL YOU CAN DRINK champagne cocktails! It's true, all you can drink, we put it to the test. The French Toast was so thick and delicious, the egg dish Shashuka was a spicey tomato and egg explosion in your mouth. So good! Pros: spreads and breads...wow! Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Super delicious food and a great atmosphere. The grilled baby lamb chops is very delicious. The Barbounia was very well prepared. The portions are not very big, but the flavor definitely makes up for it! The wine list is also very good. Definitely worth a try if you're looking for a good experience. Pros: food, ambiance more

food was not somewhat greek 8/3/2008

The ambiance was definitely the draw-in for me. Went to this place with a friend during restaurant week for our birthdays. Very disappointing. Yes, the setting is nice but the tables were SO close together - literally 2 inches apart. Made the whole experience a real downer. On top of that, the food was just so-so. Had the tuna carpaccio, duck breast and yogurt dessert and was not impressed. If it wasn't restaurant week and I was paying full price, I'd be a little more than upset. Pros: service Cons: food more

Great taste, Friendly place 7/21/2008

Top Restaurant. So far this is the only restaurant my friend cleaned her plate on every course. Restaurant Week menu was everything fabulous. Oysters with caviar, Tuna Carpaccio- YUMMY. Duck was my favorite, schwarma tender. Panna Cotta dessert was better than Gotham- more taste, the kanefeh delicious. Friendly relaxed service, hostess welcoming, servers attentive, all diners smiling. They certainly have a way with flavors. Greek Mojito rocked. We arrived with a stroller and they were helpful. This is what a great restaurant should be. An adventure worth taking. Go. Pros: Taste! Cons: none more

don't bother 7/19/2008

I've never posted a message like this in my life, but I feel compelled to say that the guy who acts as maitre d is enough to entirely ruin the visit. two occasions, 18 months apart, same disrespectful treatment and condescending attitude. one can only hope for a little more perspective (humility) from the managers of the other mediocre tourist joints on park avenue. without getting into details, if you're a ny'er who has options, spare yourself the pomposity and walk 100 yards down on 20th to Kellari Taverna, which has spectacular greek food and warm, charming service. more

Owner Message
  • Come join us in our beautiful dining room with some the "best seating in the city." We specialize in fresh Mediterranean cuisine with Greek, Turkish and Italian influences. While relaxing on our plush banquettes with a specialty drink from the bar, you will feel as though you are in a Greek palace surround by bulbous white columns. We feature octopus nicoise, souvlaki kebabs served with mint-flavored tahini however out specialty is our fresh-grilled fish including dorado or branzino. Our lamb chops are among the best in the city which go very well our ouzo menthe cocktail (lemonade, ouzo, mint). End your meal by endulging in our signature house panna cotta made with yogurt or the cigar-shaped phyllo filled with spiced apples.

Editorial
  • A big, airy space with a pan-Mediterranean menu, Barbounia has found a niche for itself serving very fresh, unchallenging food to a crowd comprised mostly of Park Avenue South office workers. If the place's generically Mediterranean decor has something of an Olive Garden vibe, it's not the fault of the food, which is surprisingly good. Start with a platter of spreads (tsatziki, hummus, spicy feta, taramosalata) and move on from there to dishes like grilled octopus with fennel or Turkish lachma hajuan, a kind of lamb pizza. Everything is scrupulously light, including the bill, which is pretty reasonable for this neighborhood.
