Live-long Fan! 4/4/2010

I have never had sushi before so I don't have anything to compare Bara to, but I must say that I was impressed! I never thought I would try sushi (the whole raw fish thing!) but it was so good it's hard to describe. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive, the food arrived promptly, and the atmosphere was very soothing. Music played in the background. We tried the spider rolls and the spicy tuna. Both were excellent. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, even if you've never tried sushi before. I will definitely be coming back for more. Pros: Everything! more

sushi portland style 2/17/2010

Best SushiPlace I've Found! 2/3/2010

I found Bara by a happy accident one night when I was seaching Portland for good sushi. I travel for work and have eaten at many highly esteemed sushi places. This is by far the bast place I've found in over 15 states! I make a point to go to Bara every time I am in town and it is always the highlight of my trip! Pros: Fantastic food, coldest beer in town, great service Cons: Small restaurant more

Great udon, average sushi 12/29/2009

My husband and I just bought dinner at Bara Sushi House this evening. The restaurant was nicely decorated in a blend of traditional Japanese decor and bright colors. Instead of shamisen music, some sort of heavy beat played in the background. It would have been fine if I could actually hear it, but it seemed to be mostly for the chef's enjoyment. Pros: Good service, nice decor, private tables & tatami room Cons: Overpriced sushi, missing authentic Japanese feel more

Incredible Sushi: Great Service 7/11/2009

After eating at the sushi bar for nine months by myself as my wife was pregnant,I couldn't wait to take my wife here once we had the baby.So we rolled In with the five day old looking to do It up,anything we wanted was our motto. We started with the Poki salad and then move to the Live sea scallop sashimi ,both were amazingly fresh and the presentation was gorgeous. They cooked and salted the scallop liver that I took out with one bite. The Hamachi sasihmi next which is my wifes personal favorite, was like butter. We then got a few orders of Nigiri, the octopus was tender and delicious, probably the best Ive ever had.The tuna was equally as good. What I really enjoyed was a chance to try some of the high end sakes. Were use to mostly ordering the house carafe and the occasional btl of Pearl, but this time we tasted through some of the high end sakes that were available in small ,large or bottle.Let me tell you you get what you pay for, they were amazing.we then roll through about a half dozen rolls,Our usual eel and Hamachi and green onion and a spider roll, again perectly done and delicious.we then get the sweet shrimp Nigiri, which for some reason have never had.I guess the thought of raw shrimpwas just never that appealing, but tonight we were going out on a limb,Sweet, delicate and tender, and the crispy fried shrimp head on the side was gobbled ,eyes and all. Then we get to the specialty rolls The Clinton corner roll and the sashimi roll, assorted fish surrounded by fresh cucumber.Amazing! We finished with some complimentary Lichi sherbert and green tea ice cream,as they congratulated us on our new arrival, which by the way didn,t make a peep the whole time we were there,Awesome. All this for about 150.00 bucks including about 50 bucks worth of sake.Like I said we were doing It up.Theres lots of great affordable stuff for your everyday sushi experience.Im sorry I didn,t get the servers name but shs always there and always super friendly and knows her stuff. This Is our new sushi house, and cant wait to go back. Pros: Super Fresh,Super Service more

Great Experience! And I found a Coupon!!! 3/10/2009

I was invited to eat here by a friend and we had the absolute best experience eating here. They have one of those special rooms that you actually sit on the floor at a low table. Not one of those fake underground tables. The food was immaculate and I got to try ALL the things that I was frightened to try at other sushi places. I even found a coupon at a site called Grubdango that saved me an extra 10% off of our meal!! What can I say, Great food and a Great price, that is a win-win in my book! more

Lovely little sushi house 1/11/2009

Pros: Happy hour specials, many rolls to choose from, great location Cons: Parking can be tricky more

Bara Sushi 12/24/2008

Bara Sushi is a family restaurant...the service is good and the prices are normal. It is fairly easy to find and has adequate parking. Highly recommended for those that really enjoy sushi. Interesting decor....small inside but cozy. more

Delicious and unique rolls 9/30/2008

Bara has some really unique rolls. Rather than heading the way of the mayo sauces and avacado, Bara presents new flavors that are light and delightful, featuring more natural flavors like chilis and fruit to compliment nice pieces of fish. Pros: Light and delicious rolls, excellent cuts of fish Cons: Pretty slow service more

A first class dining experience 4/9/2008

We walked in to Bara without any expectations. It was a late evening meal (around 9:00 PM). We were seated at a table not far from the front door. Normally this wouldn't bother me but it happened to be very cold out that night so whenever anyone walked in, we sure felt it. Pros: fresh fish, friendly waitstaff, great culinary presentation Cons: It's cold by the door! more

Long wait for a disappointing finish. 4/7/2008

The atmosphere was very nice at first however as more people filed in it gradually became much much louder and you begin to realize you're dining in a house rather then a restaurant. It got to the point where I could barely hear myself speak let alone the person I went with. The staff seemed inexperienced at handling such a large crowd and after waiting 45 minutes to get a 10 piece Sashimi order I asked for it to go. I then had to wait another 15 minutes for it to be ""boxed"" and by the time it arrived at the table it was far from fresh, although the taste of it about ten minutes later when I enjoyed it at home left much to be desired. The Salmon and Tuna tasted ""fishy"" and far from fresh. The added insult to injury was that when my bill was brought to my table the waitress informed me she had gone ahead and added an 8% gratuity, finishing by saying ""if that's ok"". I kindly payed and left, however I will not be returning. more

The building owner told me to leave! 3/12/2008

I read the reviews and was excited to try bara.. it was a windy day so me and my girlfriend decided to duck into the alcove just left of the front door when all of the sudden this disgruntled construction worker says ""get out of here this is my property"" So we left and went to yoko were the people are nice. more

amazing food. fabulous service and ipod tatami room = my new favorite! 2/20/2008

As a true sushi connoiseur, Bara is now on my Portland favorite list (along with Hiroshi, Syun and Masu). Pros: food, great service, sake menu, tatami room more

Well above average, inventive and fresh! 11/17/2007

Have been here twice, once in the Tatami room, the other time at a small table. Both times I really enjoyed my meal here. Friendly greeting at the door, very attentive service, they neither rush you out or make you impatiently wait for food, at least on my visits. One thing I like very much about this place is when you make a fairly large order, you don't sit and wait forever for one BIG plate to come out, they bring your order in stages, which I have found to be the exception to the rule in Portland. Pros: comfortable, inventive rolls, nothing gimmicky or cute, very authentic prep, pro waitresses Cons: it will probably get VERY popular more

Boutique sushi prices on Clinton Street? 11/3/2007

The reason I can't recommened Bara is based on value. The sushi was definitely tasty and the service was great. The atmosphere is very nice. more

Great 1st time 10/9/2007

A couple of weeks ago I was in the Portland area on a shopping spree and was told by some friends who had tried this new Sushi place, called Bara, that I should eat there for dinner. Being that I was not sushi fan I was a little hesitant I learned that they also have a nice teriyaki menu too. Our party ended up being 7 adults. We were seated in the private Tatami room. The service was good and the food was WONDERFUL. I have never really had good sushi, but I was told to give it a try so with help from the sushi chief I picked out 2 rolls and really did enjoy them. I am now to under stand that the quality of fish that I had tried before had been my reasoning for thinking I didn?t like sushi. The rolls were not only pleasing to look at they were very tasty!! I could taste the difference in cheep frozen fish that I have had before and fresh high quality fish and shell food that Bara serves. I have since told all my friends who live with in a 5hr ratio to stop by and give Bara a try it?s worth the drive. If I lived closer to Portland I would eat at Bara at least a couple of times a month. more

Good food...if you wait an hour 10/7/2007

I was really excited to take my boyfriend here. We were seated relatively quickly in the very small but nice dining area. We waited maybe fifteen minutes for my boyfriend to get his coke and then preceeded to wait what felt like very close to an hour to watch other people who were seated after us to be seated and get served their food before we got ours. When the food did come, it was extremely fresh (best yellowtail nigiri!) and the presentation was really good. However, I felt that because we were ignored and had to wait for so long I wouldn't recommend the restaurant to anyone unless you really don't care about quality customer service. It would help if it wasn't so claustrophobic in there and if the wait staff was more attentive. (Note: no wheelchair access.) Pros: excellent sushi chef Cons: crowded, terrible service more

Exceptional Service & Flavorful Sushi 8/27/2007

My husband and I are sushi lovers to the extreme! We drive all the way up to Seattle for great sushi-- no joke either. But now that Bara Sushi House has made it's debut in Portland, there's no reason for us to make a drive up North for fabulous sushi! All of their selections are so flavorful and presentation is beautiful! Their wait staff is always friendly and very helpful with suggestions! I recommend the mussel shooters along with their high quality sashimi selections! Darling atmosphere and a great place for a date night! Pros: Very Fresh Sushi Cons: Parking may be a little difficult, but worth it! more

High Quality Sushi 8/27/2007

I am very particular about sushi establishments as everything is relied on freshness. I have been to Bara Sushi House a few times and I must say I have yet to be disappointed. There is an abudant selection of not only sushi, but also cooked palates for the not so daring diner. And I must say, the fish has been fresh everytime! The ambiance is very intimate and the wait staff is always friendly and attentive. What a great addition to the neighborhood! Pros: Intimate, romantic setting Cons: May not be ideal for large groups more

very good fresh sushi 8/27/2007
