Bar Bar is a decent place to come before seeing shows, to grab some late night food or to warm up by the fire outside on their massive patio. Fries are particularly good. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 11/2/2012

Their outdoor patio is huge and indoor space can be cramped if there's a show at Mississippi Studios next door. The fries are particularly good and I like to hang out by the fire and meet new people. They show films and are open late. It can be loud, but that's part of its charm. more

Bad venue, Bad food, Avoid. 9/16/2011

We ordered a vegan hamburger (no fries or any sides included) for $7 that tasted bland and was the size (and about the same flavor) of a white castle microwavable hamburger. Yes, it was vegan, but I've had better vegan food in Birmingham, Alabama. The door girl at the venue had a terrible ""better than you"" attitude and ignored us for several minutes after we walked up to her. When we finally got into the venue the sound system sounded as if all the speakers were blown and was cranked way beyond what was appropriate for the small space. I will never return to this venue for a show, drink, meal, or to use their dirty bathrooms. There are so many better places to see a show or eat in Portland. more

A venue where playing music isn't encouraged 10/5/2010

Mississippi studios is a nice enough place with a good building and friendly staff, but none of that really matters when it fails at the only thing that people are going to care about... being a venue. I've never heard of a curfew for a venue, but they had one and they sure did enforce it, making the main act get off the stage at 12:30 much to the surprise of the audience and the main act. The main act said they had no clue there was a cut off time and the venue made no effort to keep the openers to a decent set time. Easily the weakest showing i've ever seen by a venue and i won't be going back to this venue anytime soon. more

Awesome Venue 7/18/2009

I went for the first time to MS for a benefit. I am completely in love with the place - the people working there were awesome, the music great and I had a great time. Will definitely be back and will recommend to friends. more

one of our favorite venues in PDX 7/15/2009

never yet seen anything but great shows there\r good room, great sound more

Great place for an intimate show 7/10/2009

I've been a performer at this venue, and was impressed by the sound system, the funky-chic ambiencee, and the quality of audiences that come in. With movie theater-style seating and an 80-person capacity, it's the perfect venue for an artist to express their full dynamic range, and really get their lyrics across. We loved playing there. On top of that, the restaurant right next door has great food and service. Pros: Great sound, good sightlines, food nextdoor Cons: Parking more

Best place in Portland to run into your hot band crush! 7/9/2009

Every time I go to Mississippi I marvel not only at the talent onstage, but off. What I mean is that the audience is usually comprised of local musicians as well as ""civilians"". What better compliment to the musical groups who get booked here than that all our local stars and talent are dying to see them too??? Portland is just that kind of town: artists supporting artists. And Mississippi Studios is at the heart of that action. Plus, with the remodel it is now a swank place to grab a snack and a drink while watching your favorite band. Pros: Location, food, musicians more

Great Music, Fun Atmosphere 7/8/2009

Mississippi Studios is a great place to hear great music. I really love seeing shows in smaller venues and this place is top notch! The staff are friendly, the performers are outstanding. I was one of the first guests when the place originally opened and now I try to catch at least one show there when I make it back to Portland. Pros: Quality Performers, Great Small Venue Cons: I live too far away! more

Awesome little cozy venue! 7/8/2009

This is one of the neatest little venues in Portland. It is truly representative of our little burgh. Fun and quirky without being pretentious. Pros: super cozy Cons: sometimes a bit TOO cozy? more

Flexible space ideal for listener, performer, producer 7/8/2009

I've been to the remodeled Mississippi Studios a few times. The space is divided into an entry atrium/dining/queueing area behind the front door, and then a second door past the bar area to the listening and performance area. The bar is open on both sides so you can see through from the atrium to watch the acts as well. Once in the listening area, you can go up stairs to a viewing gallery and seated balcony, with an upstairs restroom and green room behind that. The listening area seating can be configured from entirely open to entirely seated. What all this gives you is a great set of personal options for eating, drinking, watching the performers from many angles. What it gives the producer is a lot of flexibility in the feel of the event: split bands on the main stage and above/behind it on the gallery, lighting options, seating/standing options to match the number of ticketholders and the feel you want to create. These options really allow you to create a mood where everyone benefits... make it standing/loud/rocky, or seated for chamber music, or anything in between. This ability to set the balance means you can enjoy the music and the mood, and not be fighting the noisy people trying to get their drink on at a club, nor stumbling over screwed-down seats when they aren't appropriate to the performance. For photography, you can move all around to all the different sightlines. It's great. Mr. Brunberg's got a really great idea going on here. I'm a happy patron. Pros: Great sound, clueful patrons Cons: Bar can get a bit busy more

Portland's Finest 7/8/2009

This is a classic Portland venue...a great place to take visitors to get the ambience and culture of Portland Pros: Location, staff, music lineup, sightlines, sound more

Is good. Me Likey. 7/8/2009

I was there for the first time for Rachel Taylor Brown's cd release party. (awesome show btw!) The sound was great for all the bands. Dug the theatre seats circling the stage. So cool to have multi-level view option in a place this size. Also, the bar was open from the venue and lounge side, but had a glass window that lowered on the venue side when bands played to control the sound. Very cool. Kind of a pain if you want a drink NOWNOWNOWNOW!!!! but so neat to watch it drop you forget you need that drink so quickly. Plus it's nice to be able to step into the lounge side, hear the show routed to regular speakers, and be able to have a conversation without shouting. Friendly staff, fantastic atmosphere. Pros: Badass theatre seats for a view from above. Cons: Maybe not the best place for a super loud band to play. more

Expertly revamped music venue 7/8/2009

This is Mississippi Studios version 3.0 for which the entire lot was taken over by the performance space and a new front area with full bar was added. The space maintains intimacy while expanding capacity so more people can attend shows. The booking, by Alicia Rose (formerly Doug Fir), maintains some of the old Miss Studios style while adding more rock acts. Overall if you want to go to a show to listen to music in an intimate setting this is the best venue in town. I still miss the rootsy and much smaller feel of MS 2.0, but I have a feeling this will grow on me. Pros: Great sound, intimate space, excellent acts Cons: Limited seating for SOME shows means standing on concrete more

Mississippi studios 7/8/2009

Truely a unique and very ""portland"" venue. Small enough to feel very intimate and yet big enough that you have room to move. Good bar and great employees. \r \r Probably the best thing about Mississippi studios is that it is run by a musician. The wide variety of acts has something to please everyone.\r \r I have seen probably 20 shows here and loved every one of them.\r \r I highly recommend this venue.\r \r JB Pros: best place in town to see a small show. Cons: none I can think of more

Lots of potential here 7/8/2009

Best sound in PDX? What?!?!? For anything louder than a sensitive singer/songwriter this place is unbearable from a sound perspective. Every surface in the place is reflective including the back of the stage! How about a curtain along the back wall?? Sound pings around like crazy and hurts your ears. Also, I have heard many artists say that the ""green room"" backstage area is the most clausterphobic they have ever seen, not to mention there is no bathroom backstage. They try to schedule as many shows as possible in one night which means waiting outside till shortly before show time and then being quickly herded out as soon as the show is over. That does not seem very audience friendly. It feels kind of greedy at the expense of the show goers. Not the most relaxing night out. Let's hope they are treating artists more fairly than at some of the other venues around town. I am glad this venue is here and hope they continue to address the weak areas. Pros: I like music Cons: Read on more

comfy digs, goos times! 7/8/2009

the mighty miss is an awesome environment for live entertainment. having being one of the first people in portland to ever perform the newly remodeled venue, and also as a patron, i give it a thumbs up. coming from a musician, a food lover, and a fan of locally musician owned/run venues, this place is it........ nuff said! Pros: the vibe....... Cons: not being there...... more

Audiences AND artists love this place 7/8/2009

Am perplexed by the negative reviews. One complaining about the old chairs. They are no longer there and they weren't uncomfortable anyway. The ""updated"" venue is gorgeous. The sound has always been great, sightlines are good, it's intimate in a GOOD way and they are bringing in tons of great artists nearly every night. Artists who do get booked in here seem to love it. About 3/4 of all shows I have seen, the artist has made a point of mentioning how much they love the venue. Top that off with a friendly staff and you get a real gem of a venue. Pros: comfort, great sound, variety, friendly Cons: zip more

Good Staff, Great Music, Delicious Food 7/8/2009

Completely bias opinion of course because my firm and I designed the place!!!! Working with Jim was great and a lot, I mean a lot of hard work went in to making this one of the best music venues in town. The sound is great, the view is spectacular and it still maintains that intimate feel that the old Mississippi Studios was known for. Not to mention they now have a great menu accompanied with a cocktail of your choice. Cheers Pros: great view and sound from anywhere in the place Cons: not enough days for all the great music more
