Go here at least once a month for date night. Always enjoy sitting at the sushi bar and having the chef just make random things for us. Food is amazing, service is good - especially for portland. Also one of the few places you can get the Rogue Morimoto beer on tap! more

I'm so surprised to read some of the negative reviews! I've been twice for happy hour and both times were excellent. I haven't had a plate there that wasn't delicious!! The Kobe Flank Steak and Vegetable Tempura are my favorites (my boyfriend loves sushi, me... not so much). We had the chocolate egg rolls for dessert - to die for. Seriously. The service has always been very attentive, considering how busy they are. We will definitely be going back. If you're going for happy hour, get there early. It fills up fast! more

Last night I was eating with my family. Our meals were decent but not as great as they have been in the past. It took forever for our server to even notice we were there. We don't eat the sushi because of the mercury content., and boy was I thankful we didn't last night. Toward the end of our meal there was a woman who was told to leave the restaurant after she became ill from something on the sushi menu. I don't know all the details, but she was sitting close to me and I saw her go all pale and take a couple of trips to the restroom. I think she asked to talk to the owner or manager. She seemed genuinely concerned and was being really calm about it. Then the manager/owner or whoever he was stood right next to me when he told her she was ""86ed"" for causing trouble and she could never come back to the restaurant again. Causing trouble? He seemed really proud of himself for it. I think that goes beyond bad service into some other region. The whole thing really put a damper on our family outing. I don't know what they are thinking. I have been a number of times and their customer service has been terrible, and now I think it wasn't a coincidence but more of a practice. I have 2 friends who have had serious issues with their bills when we were at a group dinner. I know to always check my bill carefully there. I was worried about my family after seeing that woman get ill. Dinner should not include getting sick and being 86ed. I didn't even know restaurants could do that. I've only seen people get 86ed in bars if they start a fight or some other violent act. I try to support local restaurants, but I don't think I am going to recommend Bamboo Sushi Bar to anyone else. I've been looking forward to trying Bamboo Sushi ever since I first learned that a sustainable sushi restaurant was opening in Portland. We finally made it, and just in time. The happy hour brings a big crowd, and the dinner crowd is even larger. \r We were quickly seated, and had excellent service. We did not drink any of the very delicious looking cocktails, so I can't speak for the bar menu. It's nice to get free edamame, it's quite rare in a Japanese restaurant to get anything for free. However, the miso was quite salty, so much so that we had trouble even eating it. Honestly, miso is pretty darn easy to make, so that was not a good sign. \r The sushi arrived, and the portions were very small, but also very beautiful. The veggie rolls are the best value, and quite interesting too. The fish sushi was alas, disappointing. We ordered some of the sustainable varieties, and they were tiny (which was o.k.) but the taste just wasn't there. Nice place, crowded even on a Monday night, which is unusual, but shows one thing - this is a well-liked place. Excellent selection of Sake. Nice menu, the certified fish and food sources is a comforting addition, and from what I read in the Oregonian, is the only sushi restaurant in the US that provides this. \r \r I took a business partner who was up from LA to Bamboo Sushi, and of course LA brags about their sushi bars all the time, but he was definitely impressed by Bamboo Sushi. I'm new to Portland, and am excited to check out its sushi world. bamboo was highly recommended so we came in to check it out. Love the sustainability and high quality fish. We had a marinated cod that almost made us cry it was so good...at least for the two bites we both had. Looking at the menu, the prices seemed a little high but not off the charts for normal portions. When the $50 in food arrived to the table, however, my boyfriend and I just kind of looked at each other and laughed, knowing we would have order twice as much just to get even remotely full. I've been eating sushi for years and years, and have never gotten such small quantities for my dollar. But we'll be back....during happy hour when many plates and rolls are half off. more

Went to bamboo on the recommendation of A&E. So after being seated and getting our first app. We realized we were expecting much more from the place than it had to offer. The sushi was just OK not amazing, their menu was blowing a lot of we're so "" Green"" at you. I didn't really need to see a whole menu of it. i understand we need to respect our planet but bamboo must be on a payroll somewhere as much as they express it. the rest of our meal was nothing impressive things I've had plenty of times before at a lot of other places. And the desserts aren't as amazing as the A&E states. The owner must be donating a bunch of cash or something as sprung as they were on the place. My friends and I went to Bamboo Sushi for the first time the other night to celebrate a friend's engagement. I had heard great things about the restaurant before I went but the experience far exceeded my expectations. Having grown up eating at the top sushi restaurants around the country, I'm not easily impressed (at the risk of sounding like a snob). However, the sushi quality was exceptional and unlike any Portland has to offer. Other sushi restaurants in town have consistently disappointed me but this restaurant rivals anything I've had in Los Angeles and New York. The knowledgeable staff couldn't have been more gracious. It's nice to know I can finally get world-class sushi in Portland and I don't have to feel bad about destroying the oceans (added bonus). more

We wanted sushi and our friends told us to meet them at Bamboo. I usually go to Yuki. Its cheesy, but isn't that part of the whole deal anyway? The restaraunt was busy, but not too bad. A huge banner announcing it as the first sustainable restaraunt in Portland was draped over the dining room. I mean really. I'm kinda over the whole ""green"" Thing. I get it. Cant I go out to eat and not have advertising? Anyhoo, the service was ok, and the food was good. The problem arose when I didn't get the salad I ordered. I told the waiter and he just looked at me and told me that yeah, the salad I had ordered was really good. but didnt offer to get it for me or take away the wrong one. No apology either. He didn't even offer to buy the wrong salad for me. It was too tragically hip in there. Quite the scene. I get it, there is a market for that kind of place but it was expensive and lets face it, the customer service was lacking. I wish them luck. In this economy it doesn't matter how Green you are, Its how you treat people.. Probably wont go back. Pros: visually enticing Cons: terrible parking. poor waitstaff more

Such a nice surprise! We live near by and wanted some sushi, so we walked over to try it out. Amazing from the decor to the staff, and did I say that the food was the best I have ever had at a Japanese Restaurant! We had the Happy Hour Menu, so cheap for the quality you get. Our Bartenders name was Michael, he really impressed us with their selction of Liquors and infused vodikas. Check what the drink of the day is! I had a Passionfruit Cosmo.... Sublime! The California Rolls were to die for.. Just GO, you won't be sorry! Pros: Everything Cons: Nothing more

Seriously, this is the best sushi in Portland, hands down. I have been coming here for a little over a year, when it was still Masu East, and now that it is Bamboo Sushi, it is even better. I hadn't been for a couple months, but when I read the negative review before this one, I thought, ""oh no"" has my Masu East been ruined by the transition to Bamboo, I had to go for myself and find out. Turns out that not only has it not been ruined, it has been improved upon tremendously. It is fully sustainable (AWESOME!!) the fish is the freshest in the city, and the staff couldn't be nicer and more attentive. When it was Masu East it was good, sometimes great. Now it is truly excellent. I live on the West side of PDX and make the drive over simply because there is no better experience in town for this type of cuisine. So, after eating here before Bamboo Sushi and now eating here as Bamboo Sushi, I give it two thumbs way up!! I went there! I tried it! I didnt understand there sustainble concept! didnt enjoy the food, atmosphere or attitude, and i won't be back. i want my sushi that everyone else serves not a mask of fakeness with extra garnish to raise the flavor. keep trying boys but give up before u break the bank. sorry! just in town for a bit and wanted to try something good thought it would be different.
