Atrocious 4/10/2010

Undoubtedly, this was the worst restaurant I've ever had the misfortune of visiting. First, the food. Your choices are fried, deep fried or grilled (just kidding, that's fried too). Even when you ask for some fish cut up to put on your salad you get the response ""oh we don't do that here"". I can understand that response in Morton's Steakhouse, but at some dump in South Texas? Even if you like fish and want seafood, it's deep fried to the point of losing all it's flavor. To top it off, the portions are ridiculous. I ordered some nachos for an appetizer and got seven(yes, I counted) tortilla chips with velveta cheese gobbed on it in the least appetizing way imaginable. Maybe though, the place would look nice? No. Picture a redneck's broken down doublewide, through in some stupid framed rattlesnake skin hanging on the wall and run with it. Once during dinner I said ""well at least there aren't any roaches"" at which point a fairly large unidentifiable landed directly in front of me. (you can't make this up) Then, the service. Walking in the door we (group of five) had to wait about ten minutes. Not long, but when you can see many empty tables it is. The waitress obviously had something much better to do, being that she: 1: Came by all of two times to see how we were doing. 2: Forgot to give us silverware and was quite surprised when we asked for it. 3: Neglected to mention that their kitchen was broken or something so the food took about an hour and a half to come out. 4: Mishandled our check so we couldn't get it after taking three bits of our food. 5: Kept saying that we picked the worst night to come here. (No kidding) Then, we go to leave. Another long wait at the cashier. In my rush to leave (I actually left a tip out of courtesy) the check was split four ways, instead of five, so I overpaid as well. Needless to say, everyone else did not tip. And finally, to top it off walking through the parking lot trying to forget the past three hours and lose the taste of awful fish in our mouths, our waitress opened the front door, to YELL AT US. Utterly speechless. I know this is South Texas, but can we at least pretend that we might want a bit of class when we go out to eat. Pros: I didn't get punched in the face. Cons: Just about everything else. more

Nothing short of disappointing 1/1/2008

We arrived at Baffin Bay Cafe as a result of the King's Inn being closed for the holidays, which was on our itinerary simply by default. I mention this to emphasize that we weren?t disappointed to be redirected I look at situations like this as simply an opportunity for something unexpected. Coincidentally a lady recommend the Baffin Bay Cafe earlier in our trip so I wasn?t at all reluctant to go. When we arrived we didn?t have reservations which we found out were required during the couple weeks that the King?s Inn is closed due simply to all the redirected business going to the Baffin Bay Cafe. We conceded that we wanted to eat and would settle for an outdoor seating even though it was a little too cool. It was a bit disheartening while we ate we could watch all the tables in the restaurant and notice three tables that were never seated while we remained out in the under lighted cold. It wasn?t until after we ordered that we were informed by a neighboring outdoor table (a local that had never heard of the reservation situation) that the specialty of the house was their family style ?seafood by the pound?. To be brief none of the menu items sounded great and what we ordered was just as unimpressive. As we left my wife confronted the boy at the register/host desk about the empty tables. The boy was rude, changed his story four times and then stated that we could have waited for an indoor table, a choice we were never presented with upon our arrival. Fortunately our waitress Angie was a wonderful service person and pleasant. Angie is the only saving grace of the Baffin Bay Cafe. Skip it and take a chance somewhere else. They appear to have too much default business and really don?t need to do too much menu wise to impress. We won?t be back. Pros: It was open Cons: Food not good and some bad service more

Great seafood, long wait.... 12/19/2006

This was my first time here. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed. The waitress took about 10 min to bring us our drinks. We ordered family style, fish, shrimp, onion rings, fries, coleslaw and oysters. The waitress brought delicious tartar sauce to eat with crackers while we waited. The tartar sauce was just right, not too spicy or mayo-y. We finished a whole bowl in a matter of minutes. The food took too long in my opinion. We waited an hour and a half which would have been understandable if the restaraunt was busy but there was only two other parties dining! After the long wait the waitress brought hot, cooked to perfection seafood to the table. The shrimp were enormous and the fish was incredibly fresh. The fries and onion rings were crunchy and just the way I like them. If you have the time then the food is worth the wait. Its just as good as the ""other"" seafood place close by and is more reasonably priced! Pros: Fresh seafood Cons: Long waiting times for food more
