Just got back from B. Smith?s Thanksgiving offering. The place was buzzing and all the 6:00 reservations seemed to arrive at the same time. My niece & I were seated promptly enough, and as neither of us are fans of turkey, we opted for other selections from the Thanksgiving menu. I asked for a sparkling wine and she, one of the non-alcoholic punches. I received a very sweet white wine and she got something poured out of a Tropicana carton. We both had a good laugh about it. \r
However, when I pointed out to our waiter that I asked for a sparkling wine, he announced that what they had was not sold ?by the glass.? From there, things got progressively worse. When my niece ordered the black eyed pea soup, the waiter felt he had to mention that it was indeed a soup, to which she replied ?I know.? I ordered the lamb, but received a cut of beef covered in the advertised sauce (but no mint jelly) and with the listed sides. I pointed this out to our waiter as well, and he very politely apologized and explained that things were pretty hectic in the kitchen. There was no effort made to rectify the situation as I just had them take the plates away. \r
It strikes me as a place that cuts a lot of corners?from the drinks, to the entrees, to the desserts. Even though this was the prix fix menu, with everything probably pre-made in the back, I couldn?t help but feel like I was being patronized. B. Smith?s husband, Mr. Gasby was charming enough, even stopping by to engage us in light conversation, but the staff really made us feel like we were just taking up table space. The bussing staff began changing the linens before we were ready to leave. And it wasn?t like there was a line outside the door. This place leaves a lot to be desired when things are ?hectic,? which I?m not surprised, is not very often. My advice is to go with your pals (or alone at those prices) before inviting out-of-towners, and see if you would recommend it. \r
Pros: The husband's greeting is welcome and appreciated.
Cons: Some of the waitstaff can be condescending
