Glad to see so many others gave this place a thumbs down - the food was terrible. Dishes came out without sides, the meat overcooked, the noise level is way too loud. On top of it all the owner was at a table next to us screaming at a woman who did not like her food. An overall bad experience. more

Very Romantic Second Floor Dining Room 1/30/2008

My boyfriend and myself dined at Avalon Restaurant this past Saturday ad had a wonderful experience. We were first greeted by the host who asked if we would like to be seated in their more romantic second floor dining room. The room was small, quiet and lined everywhere with candles (very cool). Our server was pleasant and very knowledgeable about the menu. We shared an Antipasti plate of black olives, roast peppers, artichokes, calamari salad and Italian tuna. Everything was very good. calamari salad had little too much onion for me. For our entrees we had grilled salmon with cous cous and meatloaf with mac and cheese. The salmon was very good and cooked a perfectly as the server suggested med rare. The mac and cheese with the meatloaf was awesome. We shared a liquid center chocolate cake, very good but could use a little ice cream. I highly suggest a visit to Avalon. We have now made it our date night. Pros: BYOB, Romantic, Great Service Cons: More ice cream on dessert more

DO NOT EAT HERE 1/28/2008

I don't know who wrote the reviews with more than one star, but this place had the worst food I've ever eaten in a restaurant. Two people in my party ordered salmon. It arrived seared (who sears salmon?), and had a strong, acerbic fishy smell. The consistency was not firm; it was mushy and a bit slimy. They politely requested it be cooked for longer, in hopes of this improving the texture. It did not. It now smelled like older leftovers and neither ate it. No one will believe this unless they try it, but the couscous side dish tasted exactly like CHEF BOYARDEE. What else can I say? I ordered mahi mahi, and received another fish altogether. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't mahi. It was compact, dry, and thick like swordfish, but a bit milder, maybe tilapia. Did they think no one would notice? They should have just told me they ran out of mahi. The 4th member of our party ordered steak. It was cooked perfectly, but tasted strongly of fish. No one believed him, so all tried it and it DID taste very strongly of fish. He hates seafood, and so explained this to the waitress (politely again), who rudely explained "it will taste exactly the same way if we cook another one." He ordered pasta. I was offended by how appallingly bad the food was here. Please do not eat at Avalon. You will be frustrated and feel you have wasted your money, unless you frequent Pizza Hut and Friendly's, in which case this *might* be a step up. more

Nice Time 1/6/2008

Went this Saturday Night with son and his fiance. My wife and I have never been here before but we picked Avalon because that is where my son lives in New Jersey. We sat upstairs in a small dining room, which we discovered was a good choice (when we left, the main dining room was very busy). Our server was very friendly and seemed like he was having a great time. Pros: food and service Cons: coffee more

We sat upstairs in a small dining room, which we discovered was a good choice (when we left, the main dining room was very busy). Our server was very friendly and seemed like he was having a great time. Food was very tasty. My son had the duck and was told it had a little spice to it, which it did. His fiance had crab over pasta that she loved. My wife had the mahi mahi which the server told her was "fantastic." My wife agreed. And i had the chicken and was informed it would be served with mashed potato, which made me very happy (I was going to ask for mashed potato instead of sweet potato anyway). After dinner we shared a chocolate lava cake that we all loved. I had a coffee that I didn't like. My son told me this morning that it was one of the best dinners he'd had in a while, so I'm sure we'll be heading back next time he is up for a visit. Pros: food and service Cons: coffee more

Avalon Restaurant 12/26/2007

I was disappointed in the service. There seemed to be no communication between wait staff of what was going on and who had what tables. We were asked 3x in a row if we wanted water, (and then waited 10 mins for water) An obnoxious waiter interrupted our waitress in the midst of her telling us about the menu, to have her address another table. The Calamari was very chewy, but our entrees were Very Good, (Veal shank and Tilapia) We then ordered 2 Cappuccinos which came out luke warm and had to be sent back. There was also a surprise corkage fee which is nowhere mentioned, or told to you upon a reminder call. The restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere and a nice feel to it. I am almost thinking that because of the Holidays the hustle and bustle may have taken over for the night. I would like to try again during the warmer months to eat outside............ Cons: Corkage fee not listed...... more

Best BYOB in West Chester 11/8/2007

Avalon has got to be my favorite restaurant. I recently dined there last Sunday and the food and service was as great as always. We started out with the cheese and meat platter. Let me tell you amazing! If that was all I had to eat that night I would have been completely happy. I recommend the prosciutto and parmigiano reggiano. After that i had the pumpkin butternut squash raviolis which was just plain comfort. My boyfriend had a chicken dish that was equally as enjoyable. You will not be disappointed by Avalon and your experience will definitely make this restaurant one of your favorites. more

Poor service, boring food 7/1/2007

When we arrived, no hostess was at the desk. The line was out of the door. As a harried waitress came over to seat us, the hostess finally arrived. We were seated told our waiter would be over soon. The waitress who seated us got us water. Another person gave us bread and a third person opened our wine. Each told us our waiter would be over soon. He showed up after the meal was finished to try to sell us on dessert. No one came over to us during dinner to ask if the meal was okay. We started off with the cheese plate. Three very nice cheeses were served with quince jelly, nice crostini and fruit. They should have left off the strawberries as they were not fresh. We ordered the Summer Seafood Melange. It had no taste to it, which was very disappointing. It was like poached seafood in a broth that had less taste than canned boullion. We also had the pork tenderloin, which was to be served with mashed potatoes. We received pasta instead - we were not told of this substitution when we ordered. The pork had a very nice flavor to it and it was well prepared. The portions were adequate to small, pricing was not a bargain given the food we were served. We were very disappointed with the blandness of the food and the fact that our server didn't think that it was important to check in on us. The folks who did help us were very nice and knowlegable. However they had other tables to serve. We ate on the back patio, which was quite lovely. We will not go back given the food quality and the lack of attention from our designated server. Pros: Beautiful outdoor dining area Cons: Food was bland, service not good more

This Place Is Just Plain Bad 6/27/2007

Save your $$$$... The restaurant can only be as good as the owners and they are bad. The general attitude from the ""rude wife"" host to the husband who kept shouting ""I am the Owner"" was.. ""I don't need your business ""get out of my place"". I left out the four letter words he was shouting. The funny thing about it is we never even complained, they overbooked and took it out on their customers. They just started making people leave because they couldn't seat us. I expected to have a nice relaxing evening and it turned out to be a upsetting experience I will never forget nor will my guests. There are so many nice places in West Chester I would not waste my time even once trying this place. Yes this is the worst restaurant I have ever been to. Cons: Verbally Abusive Owners, Noisy, Crowded, Over Priced, Cold Food, etc.etc. more

One of West Chester's Best! 3/16/2007

Since re-doing their dining-room to make it trendier and bringing in a new chef I think it is one of the best restaurants in the area. It is great to have a restaurant with a Manhattan type of feel to it in West Chester. Aside from great atmosphere and great food, everyone from the staff to the owners go way out of their way for the customers. Pros: Ambience is great, Creative food without being crazy, Excellent & Informative Staff, BYOB Cons: Loud on weekends more
