Fantasic Night Out at Amma 11/9/2008

Amazing food and customer service. My husband and I dined at Amma for my birthday and were very well taken care of by the staff. We were served a house appetizer as well as one that we ordered. I had the Butter Chicken and my husband had the Lamb Chops. Both dishes were outstanding! Even better than the food was the customer service. We never once had to ask for anything, the staff was very observant and could anticipate our every need. They also surprised me with singing happy birthday and giving me a mango cheesecake on the house. I would definately recommend this place! It is a little bit spendy, but well worth it. -Julie Pros: great customer service. friendly staff. mouth-watering food more

Editorial review from GrubHub 2/15/2008

We were very happy with our order. It arrived quickly and the food was not greasy like we've experienced from some other Indian food restaurants. Just the right amount of spices for us too. We will definitely order from here again. more

overhyped overpriced overcrowed dont understand whats the fuss is about amma?? i went there n had the worst experience. had to wait 45 even we had reservations. i brought a special friend who had to stand as no chair was available. very cramped place. loud noise - i cant say its a fine dining experience as we cudnt even hear each other. we were sitting in the aisle where waiters are walking every minute n their plates n arms almost touch u as there is no room. food is way too expensive n the portions are too small - i have never experienced anything like this. we had tasting menu but didnt enjoy the food at all. other fine indian restaurants have much more flavorful food. i would never be back - they ruined my evening. food has no taste. please take my sincere advice and try some other restaurant. dont waste your money here. Pros: cant think of one Cons: overcrowed, very noisy, tiny portions, very pricey more

Tactless and Rude 7/16/2007

My boyfriend and I had anniversary dinner reservations. On the day of the dinner, the restaurant called and left us a message informing us that they decided to rent the space out to a private party, but that we could stop by for lunch instead. This was simply tactless and rude, and made us scramble to find a last-minute dinner reservation - not exactly what you want to be doing on your anniversary! There are other amazing Indian restaurants in the city - we've dined at many of them - so we will take our patronage to them instead - as they have always honored our reservations and have treated us with great kindness. more

Worst customer service, would not go there again 1/31/2007

We have visited this restaurant couple of times now. But our latest visit was totally disappointing to say the least. We had made reservations for Xmas day dinner and we had our 5 yr old with us. We needed a earlier time, so we called and they gave us a 7:00 p.m. table. When we arrived at the restaurant, they didn't have any table for us and the staff behaved very rudely with us as if we were walk-ins. They asked us to come back at 9:30 if we need a table, as if there is no other place in NYC !! And then they offered a table in the aisle with a high chair for 5 year old in the aisle where they carry hot plates almost every minute !! I don't need to eat their food that badly, I guess. Pros: unique indian food Cons: poor service, small place and poorly placed tables more

But the whole thing was handled very badly and the manager should have diffused the situation, but she ignored us completely and we left the place. We then went to Diwan and the restaurant was almost empty and we enjoyed our Xmas dinner there. Needless to say, we will never return to Amma. GREAT FOOD & Ambiance. Be there early to try the full course menu. 12/10/2006

The food is fantastic. Unlike many Indian restaurants where fusion means - changing the entire flavor of the indian dish - here at Amma they maintain the flavor as it is. If I think back, there wasnt any item that I havent had before, but never in this combination or format. They have done a great job in creating the great combination of different dishes into each of their dishes. The ambiance is great and relaxing. Good setting for a date. Pros: Good food and ambiance Cons: The full course menu is available only before 9pm more

They have done a great job in creating the great combination of different dishes into each of their dishes. The ambiance is great and relaxing. Good setting for a date. What I did not enjoy is the fact that the tasting menu which covers almost all of their entire menu into one 6 course dinner, cannot be ordered after 930pm. Their explanation was valid that it will take 2 hrs to eat that and since they close around 11pm, they didnt want to rush us through the courses. Someone wanting to experience indian food has to try the tasting menu, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. Make sure you reach there early (around 7pm) and eat slow for 2 to 3 hrs, enjoying each course. If not your going feel like a bubble... all night. Expensive in comparison to other indian restaurants. A dinner for 2 ended up to be around $130. Tasting menu for 2 with wine will end up to be around $150-$160. The manager was kinda rude. But the others are gr8. Pros: Good food and ambiance Cons: The full course menu is available only before 9pm more

very delicious 11/8/2006

Have ordered dinner for delivery from here and was very satisfied. the chicken curry I had was very flavorful and the rice was fluffy. The lamb, garlic, and vegetable naan were all hot, fresh, and fluffy. The only downside to the meal was that I felt very thirsty shortly after the meal, probably due to the strong spices and all. more

Amma Doing justice to its name 6/15/2006

Having heard so much from family and friends in Westchester county. We finally made it to Amma. The day we made the reservation was a Wine pairing dinner evening It was love at first sight. The food was exellent. The choice of wines were stunning. The staff did a wonderful job in explaing each course with the wine pairing. The place was packed with wine pundits, who seemed to be so regulars at the restaurant. We just love this place Pros: Food, wine and the staff Cons: Samll dining area but romantic more

Yukky food! 5/21/2006

I am Indian, and I have tried many Indian places in NY. I went to Amma after a friend recommended it. The food was absolutely horrible! And their prices are very high - they actually think that they can get away with charging such prices for such terrible food and service! There are much better places in NY with better prices. We actually gave 10% tip (which we have never done despite mediocre food and service), because we felt totally ripped off. In fact, while leaving the place we saw two people looking at the menu, and I couldn't help telling them that the food was horrible. Pros: Romantic ambience Cons: Terrible food, Average service more

  • The Scene
A discerning crowd of mostly families comes here expecting--and receiving--food that's a cut above. The small, peaceful dining room is peach-colored with handsome fabric art and a general air of spotlessness. The hovering service staff describe everything in detail. Dishes are served individually, rather than family-style.

    The Food
The clean-flavored, delicate version of Indian cuisine served here is impressively tasty; several discrete notches above the average decent neighborhood establishment. Spinach chaat--peppery, batter-fried leaves topped with zingy mung sprouts--makes a terrific starter; so does a trio of small, subtle samosas. Tandoor-grilled lamb chops are incredibly juicy and savory, and a pear chutney sets them off terrifically. Kararee bhindi--crisp, tangy okra and onion salad--is memorably pungent. Madras chicken and the tomatoey Malabar salmon are standard, while desserts are a must-try, particularly the fluffy housemade mango cheesecake and kulfi in citrus soup.
