The 2nd weekend of August, Amish Acres holds a HUGE Arts & Crafts festival where people from all over the USA come to eat, shop & enjoy a weekend of a & c.
Nappanee, Indiana is a small town located on the intersection of US 6 & SR19 N. It has population of Amish people, "English" people (read as regular white people) and a variety of ethnic diversity that has moved into the area within the past 12-15 years.
Nappanee is a quaint town with lots of great antique stores, food, and a peaceful drive in the country. This is prime farmland with lots of wide open spaces for the eye to feast upon.
Speaking of feast, when you stop by Amish Acres, you'll learn about the Amish people...or at least a version of them. Amish Acres is a tourist place to visit, but there are lots of hidden gems here!
There is The Round Barn Theater that hosts a variety of plays, musicals & even events for children. Bus loads of people from all over the USA stop in when they are traveling throughout the area.
Enjoy the variety of activities and foods throughout your visit, drive throughout the area to see the real Amish people. Please be kind & do not ask to take their photos. They wish to NOT be photographed. They are soft-spoken & kind, ride in black Amish buggies pulled by a horse or two. If you're lucky, you'll see some great photo opportunities from your car of "laundry day" with many solid colored dresses or shirts hanging from their clothes line.
Be sure to visit the wonderful antique stores in the center of Nappanee - US 6 & SR 19. Antiques on the Square is one of the rare gems in antique stores that you can find great items at good prices with friendly locals that love to meet new people. When you're done, you can head to Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana or head east on US 6 to Lake Wawasee & Syracuse.
