ABK was a huge lifesaver for me when I first moved to Buffalo about 4 years ago. The staff seemed friendly and were very kind towards my dog.

Editorial review from Citysearch 7/18/2014

Please read my review from Google. I do NOT recommend this kennel. \r \r To add to my review from my Google account I was told if there was a problem they would move the dogs to a more suitable place for their comfort and safety. They were never moved. \r \r \r more

My beloved dog who passed away 1 yr 5/21/2012

My beloved dog who passed away 1 yr ago stayed many times at Amherst boarding kennel. She had MANY medical problems and the staff was always wonderful with her despite all of her medical issues and multiple daily medications. My current dog, Lilly has also stayed many times at Amherst Boarding Kennel and usually does not want to come home! Lilly is very active and LOUD, but the staff always welcomes her. more

Terrible...Almost Killed My Dog 9/2/2011

These guys are awful, and they almost killed my dog. I have an older greyhound with arthritis, and we had boarded him at the kennel a few times. We left him there for about a week, and when we came back they said he had been limping and that they had run out of his arthritis medication, even though we had left extra with them in case they lost any pills. When we got him home, we realized he had lost a significant amount of weight in that week and he wasn't just limping-one of his paws had swollen considerably! We called the vet and brought him in right away, and the vet informed us that our dog had likely been overdosed by the kennel on his medication (despite us leaving explicit written instructions about dosage with the kennel) and that he was in renal failure and had a good chance of dying. We took our dog to a vet hospital and, thank goodness, he recovered after spending a few days there, although it racked up a $3,000 vet bill. To their credit, Amherst did cover the bill. Regardless, I highly encourage you to board your dog elsewhere! more

12 hours without bathroom opportunity 10/3/2010

I very rarely leave my 2 golden retrievers at a kennel, but when I did, I always felt confident about leaving them at Amherst Boarding Kennel up until this last time. My dogs were there for two nights. What I discovered when I picked them up was that my 11 year old male golden had urine along his left flank, belly and chest. There was not mention of any issues in the ""report card"" and I called when I got home. I was transferred to the kennel staff who said that actually both dogs had been bathed that morning as they had had ""accidents"".overnight. This was so unusual- I was astonished. When I pushed, asking what time they were let out, I was told the morning staff lets them out at 7:30 am. When I asked about the dog doors tthat the website states they have access to for the outside- I was told they close the dog doors at 7:30- meaning minimally- if your dog is the last dog to have the dog door closed and the first dog let out- They are without access to the outside to urinate etc. for 12 HOURS MINIMUM. So, the dogs (both are in same kennel) urinate on the floor and have to sleep in that same kennel all night. The website states: Doggie doors make easy access for your pet to enjoy the outdoors in large runs that are covered to protect them from the elements. When I took the tour, no mention was made of the dog door only being accessible for only 12 hours. They stated they have access to it ""all day"" when I initially asked. No one volunteered that for 12 hours it is shut. When I expressed my dismay over this, I was told ""It's not our choice, no one wants to hear dogs barking. Blame the town of Amherst"". The website also boasts of a treat before they are tucked into bed, insinuating a nice treat around the normal ""bedtime"" which I think most people would peg at around 9pm or later. Not too many families let the dog out for the last time at 7:30 (or earlier if your dog hadn't gone out through the dog door in a while - I'm sure all the dogs aren't encouraged to go out prior to the locking of the kennel dog door and/or if your dog is one of the first dogs who has their door locked). I think it is interesting that I wasn't told they gave the dogs a bath- It appears that more often then not, dogs must end up being in their own urine. When I stated this, I was told ""no, usually there's just a puddle that get hosed down- they may have walked in it, but usually don't lay in it. Unfortunately I will need to find another kennel for my infrequent need. more

Treat animals well, but not humans... 11/25/2008

My family dog used to go to both daycare and boarding at Amherst Boarding Kennel. Their prices are quite good, but we found that our dog did not get as much playtime as at some other daycares we used. While we felt our dog was treated well, I found the staff at ABK to be very rude on a number of occasions. They are very abrupt when you interact with them and quite inflexible. The kicker for me was when they lost my deposit for a boarding stay and assumed I was trying to con them out of money. (My family has never missed a payment to them.) When I produced the deposit receipt, they accepted that I had paid but did not apologize for their mistake. I felt like my business did not matter to them, so I took it elsewhere. more

Totally worth trying it out. 7/16/2008

My one year old dog is very familiar with daycare as I have been taking him periodically to Luv Your Dog Inc. since this past winter after we completed a basic obedience course there. Daycare helped rid him of his shy and nervous tendencies and he is confident in all situations now. I was looking for a more affordable option than Luv Yor Dog Inc. (8am to 6pm is $25.01) since I'll be out of town for over a week next month... I didn't want to board him so my mother agreed to watch him in the evenings and while at work leave him in daycare. So I found Amherst Boarding Kennel while searching online and decided to give it a try before actually leaving town... Pros: Clean facility, Friendly staff, All dogs accepted and sorted into play group accordingly Cons: Big establishment, Not intimate, Closed daily from 1pm-4pm more

I have done my research ABK is by far the BEST in WNY 7/10/2008

I have to say to the complainer of bringing your dog with you to Manhattan. You must be just another rude New Yorker that feels the world owes you something! I would love to bring my dog to NYC it would most certainly be a fun vacation especially visiting Central Park. Live a little! As for your failure to reading policies and procedures I suggest paying attention to specifics. All businesses are not your normal 9-5 as you literally imagine. Pay attention! I have been bringing my dog here for a couple of years and I would never go anywhere else. They are very helpful and the staff is completely courteous and professional and my dog is happy every time we pick him up and drop him off. Keep up the good work ABK Crew! more

extremely poor service 6/26/2008

I was recently forced to bring my 90lb dog into downtown manhattan because the people at the boarding kennel neglected to inform me that they close down at 1:00 pm for the afternoon. Although i was there only five minutes past, had a reservation, and the owner was still there with doors open i was turned away in a highly rude manner. If that is how they treat the customer I certainly dont reccomend that anyone bring their pet to this unprofessional facility. more

Boarding good, Grooming bad 6/9/2008

I boarded my dog there and also had it groomed before she went home. I was not happy at ALL with the grooming job that was done. It didnt even looked like the "groomer" brushed my dog. I will board there again, but as for grooming...never again. more

My Dogs love going here! 5/1/2008

I have used Amherst Kennels for about 5 years, now. Have left them there for up to 2 1/2 weeks and they are always healthy and happy when we return. I use them often for Doggy Day Care, too...sometimes 2-3 times a week. They LOVE going there...rushing out of the car to see their friends...being the staff and the other dogs. It's like day camp to them...I think. The staff is wonderful. I have one dog that has medical issues, and needs daily meds and special foods. When we board them...they take such good care of my special needs girl, I never have to worry. I highly recommend this place. The reviewer who was annoyed about them not asking your dog's name..well..I can't believe they didn't already have it as you have to give that information when you make the reservation. I know it gets hectic, sometimes...when they are signing in boarders. The most important thing is that they take great care of your animals. more

A vacation trip for your dog! 2/24/2008

My golden loves this place!\r \r We board him for vacations, and have also used it occassionally for the day care. They know him by name, and treat him very kindly. He is always in great shape when we pick him up.\r \r The owners are truly dog lovers, and it shows in this first-class operation. more

amherst bording 5/4/2007

When I brought my dog in for the first time on may 4th 2007 I was not asked what my dogs name was, I had to offer it myself. The environment seemed clean but I was not given much attention. I am going to see what happens when I pick her up. more

Clean environment, you won't have to worry about any deseases or sicknesses your pet could catch.
