Good but definitely not Great 11/30/2008

If you think Rainbow Roll is GREAT SUSHI, you should not review any sushi restaurant. Great sushi should give you the pure taste and texture of the particular ingredient you are tasting, not a jumbo Sushi Chopsuey. It is a disgrace for the fish who died for the cuisine. Now, lets get back to the restaurant itself. They do have fresh ingredient. And it is a decent sushi bar east of 605 FWY. But the size of the Sushi does not mean greatness. I would actually give it 3 & half stars if it is not over priced for their food. And I would not want to wait in-line to get into this place. Pros: It would not go wrong. Cons: Not the best deal people has been raving about. more

Hottest sushi chef EVER 11/22/2008

This place is unbelievable. No skimpy portions here. Rolls that would normally take one bite at a lesser establishment take 3 bites at AKASAKA. It's no joke. TRY to put the entire piece of rainbow roll in your mouth...it's not going to happen.\r \r The edamame and miso are always outstanding, as is the PONZU. I don't even use soy at this place, as the ponzu is THAT GOOD. \r \r I work near this fine establishment, and am there 2-3 times a week for lunch. \r One more thing- order some VINNIES!! Pros: sit at the bar for the best service Cons: can be crowded! more

Best sushi in southern California!! 4/18/2008

This is an authentic whole in the wall, great food, and the quality of sushi is always fresh, I have been going here for 8 years. Went to a sushi place in vegas and was chatting up a sushi chef and mentioned akasaka, and THEY NEW ABOUT THEM!! he said that Akasaka is famous for having some of the best sushi. more

A real Japanese restaurant with outstanding cuisine 1/1/2008

I have been searching for an authentic Japanese restaurant in my area. I found a hidden treasure in Akasaka. The sashimi is sliced thick and is fresh and flavorful with much variety. The beef teriyaki tastes like real steak teriyaki. My search is over - Akasaka rules. Pros: The real deal for Japanese food aficionados. more

Great Sushi in the middle of nowhere.... 5/24/2007

This tiny hole in the wall is a great place to go if you happen to be driving nearby or actually work nearby (as I do). The sushi is HUGE so therefore the price is more $$, but worth it. You get large cuts of Sashimi and HUGE rolls. My favorite are the handrolls...any type! True about the slower service especially during lunch time, but if you go a little after it's not too bad. If you have a large group, make sure you call beforehand for reservations. The place is pretty small, but defintiely a great place for sushi! Pros: Fresh fish, huge portions Cons: small and often busy more

Great Sushi 11/17/2006

The service is a bit slow and expensive. The sushi is outstanding and worth the wait. They customize rolls and offer some exotics. A very good sushi bar in the middle of the Industrial District Pros: Great food Cons: slow service, expensive more

Can you say roll? 10/29/2006

The rolls are ginormous! Try the spider roll, eel roll and/or the rainbow roll...all are just delish! You've got to show up hungry! My husband and I have been going there for years and it's one of the best sushi spots in town. You'd never guess it was there! The place is in the middle of an industrial area and looks like someone's house! The sushi chef is female...that's a huge and rare honor! All the sushi staples are great, but you've got to try some of their other dishes. The Chirashi bowl, Ankimo, Uni Hand Roll and Kama are all great! \r We have taken sushi fanatics there and they have all loved the place! It's a small little place so make sure you call ahead and make reservations or show up early. Pros: Huge portions, Very Fresh Fish Cons: Can be a long wait, Need more servers more

best sushi in LA... 12/8/2005

my family & i have been dining at Akasaka for over 10 years now. this place is so tucked into a residential area, which to me is good, cuz i'm sure it can be even more crowded than it is now, esp. the wknd. all their sushi & sashimi are wondering. i don't think i have better ones elsewhere. there are warnings though... each piece of sushi/sashimi they serve is at least 3 times bigger than other places, which justify the high price. also, u better call before u come, cuz for some reason, the owners love to take month-long vacation whenever they want. make sure u come hungry... Pros: fresh fish, huge portion, tasty Cons: parking, pricey more

Best Sushi in LA 11/30/2005

My family and I have been visiting this Restaurant for over 5 years and their sushi and sashimi are always consistently good. Although it can get a little pricey, but the food quality is worth every dollar spent. Pros: Fresh Sushi, Fresh Sushi , Fresh Sushi Cons: Short hours more

Another fair restaurant 9/30/2005

Was recommended that this place was good and that all the locals dine here. Parking looks like it could be a problem if you go on a busy night (weekend). Luckily, we dined on Thursday at ~8PM. Service was slow and we had to ask for the tempura sauce. I also overheard the other table asking for their rice. The salad dressing and the miso soup was very good. We ordered the crunchy roll, spicy tuna handroll and a combo plate - very good. Our tab came out to $57 ($66 with tip) for the 2 of us. Kinda expensive for the appearance of the restaurant but worth it for occasional visits. Pros: good food , hot soup Cons: ambience, service, parking more

Good food! 9/11/2005

I have been to this restaurant for more than 10 times for less than 6 months. The food is great and I especially love the Nabeyaki udon. It's one of the best udon that i ever had in LA. My boyfriend loves their uni sushi and their Fried Tempura Roll. However, I guess it's always too busy, and I usually need to wait at least 15 minutes b4 I can order. The waitress won't refill the drinks for us until we ask for it and waited another 10 minutes as well. But I still recommend this restaurant to people cuz their food quality is excellent! Pros: Huge sushi, Fresh food Cons: Crowded more

Hacienda Heights Biggest Secret! 6/15/2004

Akasaka is different! Hidden in an industrial area on a side street, when you take your first glance you think it's a house, but it's the restaurant all the locals told me about. Suprizingly cozy atmosphere, great place to take family and friends, what more can you say about a place that has been running strong for more than 30 yrs. by word of mouth. Sushi rolls are huge and menu is excellent, oh yeah! and the cool, and sexxy hot sushi bartender great service and good conversations, much love!!!!!!! Pros: great parking, priced right, good service more

The Rainbow Roll is HUGE!! 5/19/2004

I agree, you'll never find this place unless somebody recommend. This place is hidden in the industrial area and has been around for, I believe, 30 years. The food is great especially Sushi. Their rolls are HUGE and very deliciuos as the prices are reasonably high. But it's worth it. Believe me! more

Female Sushi Chef! 12/23/2003

I've eaten here twice, once at the sushi bar and once regular dining. Both are great! The pieces of fish at the sushi bar were larger than most and very fresh and the price was very reasonable. The regular dining was kind of pricey. However, you get lots of food for the price. You would never find this place if you don't know about it. It is located on a side street and all their customers know this place from word of mouth. The owner is the sushi chef and is very good. Dont forget reservations! more
