Wonderful 3/29/2006

I have been here a number of times and have never been disappointed. It is very large with very comfortable seats. If you are seeing an epic film, the giant screen and great audio really makes it come alive more than would be the case in a small 70-person cinema. It is quite clean and while it can be a bit expensive, it is generally worth it. more

its a balcony... INSIDE the theater! 3/22/2006

I didn't see any mice.... and, there was no one else in the theater when I went. Probably because we saw "the Island" and of course, that was super lousy. I liked the theater! we sat in the balcony, because of course, there IS a balcony; the screen is huge, and the chairs comfy enough. It's right across from the metro, I'd feel safe walking around outside the theater late at night, Sala Thai is right across the street, I can't think of anything else I'd like to see here; except... more movies, although of course, with only one theater they can't have much diversity, but really.... March of the Penguins was there for like, 63 months... more

What a Shame 3/21/2006

This could really be the best place in town to see a movie. The screen is huge, the sound is great and the balcony takes you back to days before the multiplex ate its competitors. However, when you notice mice running around during a movie showing and complain to the manager it would be nice to hear shock or horror, not a shrugged off "happens all the time." If you can overlook rodent companionship try ignoring the exhaust fans in the ceiling that make an unholy racket or the fact that anyone entering the theater during a daytime showing casts a shadow on the screen. And don't get me started about the state of the bathrooms -ugh. Hopefully someday management will wake up and stop wasting this gem of a theater. Until then I'll be at the mall. more

Don't believe the hype 12/30/2005

Everyone in DC seems to love The Uptown Theater. It is a very large theater with a quality screen that shows the latest and biggest movies. But each time I attend this theatre the crowd is obnoxiously loud and the floor and bathrooms are very dirty. I try staying away from this theatre because I’ve had the same annoying experience frequently over the past year more

What can I say - a classic! 8/20/2005

The uptown is an institution in washington dc. It is a old, grand theater in the style that hollywood is founded on. It had big red velvet curtains and a balcony of seats. True, it has gotten a little run down over the years, the seats are not in the best nick, and the floor is usually a little bit too sticky. Still, there is nothing like watching Star Wars or Lawrence of Arabia on that big huge screen. more

The Whole Experience Makes it the Best in DC 8/18/2005

It's not just the gigantic screen and the great sound system that continues to make the Uptown the best place in DC to see a new release. It's the building itself, with the balcony seating and the cavernous room with the almost floor to cieling screen. It's the fact that it's the centerpiece of Cleveland Park and located at the top of the Metro station. And it's the fact that there are literally dozens of spots to hit after a movie within a block of the theater to hang out and talk about the movie. My favorite, of course, is Ireland's Four Provinces. more

Even crappy sci-fi looks good on this screen 8/15/2005

At the uptown, even the worst movies shine. It is a grand old theater that hasn’t yet been chopped up into mini-theaters. With men’s and lady’s lounges, a balcony that many swear by, tolerably comfortable seats, and tons of great restaurants in the neighborhood, you can’t go wrong. Unless they’re showing “The Island.” No-one could watch that thing. Uugh. more

The best place to see a movie in DC! 8/5/2005

Uptown is the best movie theater in town! The old-style theater (complete with a balcony!) features the largest movie screen in DC – at 32 feet x 70 feet, it's IMAX-sized. The single-screen venue features first-run movies (it’s the perfect theater for action/adventure movies with special effects -- hence, the LONG lines fir the new Star Wars movies), but has shown classic movies on weeknights in the past. more

Best Theatre In the City 7/14/2005

You can’t come to the nation’s capital without catching a movie at the renowned Uptown Theater In the heart of downtown D.C. This is a one screen theater that only shows very “high in demand” movies, so you won’t catch your small low budget movie here. The curved screen it about 40ft high and over 60ft wide; it is a sight to see. There is only one ticket both so you should arrive early to avoid the long lines. The biggest down side is parking, which is slim to none, your best bet is to catch the metro which is two blocks down the street. more
