By all accounts Tan A should be a specialty food shopper's paradise. Its size alone makes you wishful that perhaps it might be actually be a one stop shopping Asian grocery store. That really hasn't been the case for a while now. Since a while back I haven't bothered checking out their fresh seafood section because it's just a waste of time but I finally arrived at the conclusion that going there at all is a fruitless effort when I was sifting through their selection of eggplant during a recent trip and found mold on practically every package. I used to visit a smaller mom and pop place called Far East, located on Horsepen about a block away right, after I visit Tan A because inevitably I would unhappy with the degree of freshness (or the lack thereof) of the perishable goods at Tan A. Things are much fresher, especially the produce and the seafood, at Far East. I don't even waste my time visiting Tan A anymore for my weekly groceries. To give Tan A its due, they do stock a large enough variety of any particular non perishable good. I'll just warn you to remember to check the expiration dates on these items before buying. These days I only visit Tan A for a specific brand of soy sauce I've used forever that I can't find anywhere else. Or when I'm feeling particularly masochistic and feel I need a dose of their cashiers' rude attitude.
