Carolina Western definitely has its own crowd. People are friendly, but don't come in here with any sorts of high standards. There are numerous smokers (mostly bikers) outside in the gravel parking lot, some of which stand out in a tiny metal storage shed out back when it gets colder. The place has a cement outside with what looks like boarded-up windows (there really are no windows inside). The working-class neighborhood where it's located has some abandoned cats, and while it's sweet that they feed the cats, there are now 2-3 kittens that you have to watch out for in the small parking lot. There are numerous 7 foot pool tables inside, and they are like the coin-operated kinds where the balls get stuck rolling down the chutes to the main ball area. There are maybe 1-2 bridges in the whole place, which you have to walk around to find when you need one, since the cheaper tables don't have hooks on the sides to hold them. They play mostly country music or oldies here, and it's pretty clear that the people hardly listen to anything else (and don't really care to, either). I see lots of kids playing here, which doesn't make made much sense to me, given that every other picture on the walls contains at least one nude female, and Playboy magazines are openly laid out at the bar. Haven't tried the food, but it's the first place where I've paid $1.50 for a soda, and have only gotten a cold 10 oz. can from the bar (there are no waiters/waitresses). Like I said, the customers are friendly, and the people working the bar are friendly, but honestly the place really is a dive. If you've been to plenty of pool halls, this may not fall at the top of your list. It's a well-established place in Winston, and it's one of the few decent-sized pool halls in the area. However, it's stuck in its ways, so deal with it as best as you can.
