Elmwood Park Zoo is a nice quite zoo away from the city. The Zoo received a total makeover several years ago and continues to add more animals and trails. The animals are sometimes rescued animals. There are live shows where the kids can get up close and personal with owls, and reptiles. My nephews had their birthday party there and the kids had a blast. There are pony rides too. There is a great gift shop which doesn't charge you and arm and a leg like the big Philadelphia Zoo does. It's a great place to spend an afternoon with the kids.
