What's the hood without a local Chinese takeout place to serve your every need. If you've been all through uptown, the Bronx and Brooklyn, then you're no stranger to these Chinese takeout palaces that can have your meal prepared in a matter of minutes. If you're not up for walking in and getting a meal, then just call and someone will usual deliver for you and you'll get a free can of soda with at least an $8 purchase. While there are few noticeable differences from one takeout place to another, the one you frequent will begin to feel more and more familiar as you continue to sample the MSG-heavy food. Enjoy!

This place has anointed itself as the home of the falafel and grill, so who's to argue with that? BUt seriously, if you're a NYU student, then you've probably eaten here and sampled the assortment of the eatery's Mediterranean platter. You can either eat in or take your meal to go and the lunch specials are mostly decent. Be sure to sample one of the salads or sink your teeth into one of the delicious grilled kebob dinner platters.

With piles of restaurants cleverly decorating seemingly every block of Manhattan, it's easy to say that you'll never starve in New York. With that in mind, you may want to take your dining experience to another level by enjoying a night at Cleopatra's Needle. This place usually caters to a much older crowd (think 30s and above) but you'll enjoy a decent Mediterranean cuisine. The bar is located directly in the middle of the space, while most of the tables line the walls. There is also a back room for dining as well, but the real treat comes in the form of the live jazz music you can enjoy on any given night of the week. The restaurant book local acts and musicians from abroad and as the night progresses, you just see other musicians slide right in with their own instruments.

There are still a ton of places here in the city where you can get a genuine mean at a minor hit to your wallet, and the soul food cuisine of M&G Diner is right along those lines. While the decor of the eatery in West Harlem, on 125th Street, may appear to be a flash from the 60s or 70s in terms of its no nonsense aesthetic that refuses to update to the look of more trendy spot, the food is unapologetically soul and delicious. There simply isn't another place where you can get better fried chicken, and for soul food lovers, you'll find exactly what you need there. For locals of the neighborhood, M&Gs is synonymous with soul food at its best.

While there's a million places to eat in the city, it could be easy to neglect what's really happening with food uptown. For a break from the usual standard of midtown and downtown restaurants with similar menus, a soul food experience like Copeland's could have heading uptown more often. The staff at this establish is warm and friendly and when you step in this restaurant, you'll feel like it late in the day (or even night) no matter what time it is since the windows are covered so you can enjoy your meal. The menu features some of the best down south cooking that the city can offer and you'll certainly get your dollar's worth.

If you've ever made the trek to Spanish Harlem for a meal, then you already know about Sandy's. For those that don't know, this restaurant is what it's all about for some of the best in Spanish food in the area. With a mix of dishes that originate from places like Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, you would swear that the cuisine was home cooked. While there may be a ton of other eateries in the area, Sandy's has been on the map in this area for as long as I can remember (years!) and has stood the test of time, even as the neighborhood has progressed. If you're in the neighborhood then stop by for one of Sandy's amazing dishes that can either be eaten there or available for take-out.

If you're in the market for one of those free wine & Chinese food places, then the Cottage is certainly up your alley. Like similar establishments, the Cottage keeps the whole theme simple: cheap Chinese food and free wine. Head there at any night of the week and it will surely be packed (especially on Fridays and Saturdays) And if you're not there early to put your name on the list to get in, you'll be waiting for a while, because the people already inside are doing their best to stretch out their meals so they can fill up on the seemingly endless jugs of wine that the waiters seem to be eager to bring over. The menu is less than memorable, but you'll get a decent meal and a decent buzz from all of the wine you'll sure to be consuming.

If you're a student at NYU or just looking for a meal after a night at the club, then you've already heard of Cozy Soup + Burger on Broadway near Union Square. What sets this place apart from the rest is the menu and a cooking staff that can prepare just about anything at all hours of the night. I've gone there a bunch of times at various hours and you'll get a sense of comfort from the waiters who are decent and very helpful. The place is usually packed at night after hours, filled with folks fresh out of the club, looking for a bite. You can get breakfast here at any hour and the menu will absolutely have something for everyone. Be sure to try the milkshakes, malts and the grilled chicken wrap, among other things.

If you're down for a little something different from all of the other restaurants in the SoHO area, point your attention towards the ACME Bar and Grill. I went there on a Friday night, had no problem getting a table and felt immersed in the overall vibe of the venue. The waiters can be a bit slow for a bar/restaurant that isn't that large, but the food is well worth it. From the Po' Boy sandwiches to the gumbo and jambalaya, you won't be disappointed. The back of the restaurant serves as a bar area and there is a wide selection of beers at your disposal. One thing you'll notice while you eat is that the "ledge" bordering the walls of the restaurant are adorned with tons of different hot sauses and spices from all over the world. The vibe is pretty decent, though if you are picky about having a quiet dinner alone with someone, beware of the people in other tables sitting about a foot away from you as they tables are grouped so tightly together. This is definitely a place I recommend if you're hanging out with a group of friends. And be sure to check this place out during the weekend from 10-4, as there is a brunch special, including open bar.

Whether you want to get a bite before a Yankee game or just heading back from the club after a night out, Crown Donut never fails to be that Bronx destination that is always open for your business. The diner is located just north of Yankee Stadium and really is the only business open after hours. The staff is cordial and you'll get decent service. Prices are fair and while the food is just alright, you have more than enough choices on the menu, so bring your appetite. The late night crowd will usually be people on their way home from the club or paramedics in the area taking a break during a shift.
