The Hidden Bar 5/3/2006

This little pub is hidden away, nestled into a neighborhood and far from the busy streets. This is probably one of the last of a breed of neigborhood pubs in the classic sense of the word. Imagine if that uncle you have who has a fancy wood bar in the basement decided to put that bar on the first floor and opened it up to the public. This is what the Newark Nook is like. It's like walking into someone's house and ordering a drink. This is a no-frills kind of place. This is a place where people in and around the area of Chicago known as Norwood Park can literally walk to the bar and spend some time with neighbors and friends. No food, just booze. Decent selection, but nothing fancy. There's a TV for watching the games and enough fire department memorablia to make you think the guy who opened the place might be a retired fireman. The cleanliness leaves a little to be desired. I remember thinking the bathroom could use a good cleaning. Just for the charming aspect alone, it's worth finding. Good place to meet up with a friend, have a drink, catch the game and talk. No loud thumping music and nothing but people talking and drinking. more
