Great place for kids to learn respect and focus 3/17/2006

I enrolled my 6 year old at Tai Yim because it's right around the corner, and I had heard good things independently from some Asian friends. We are very pleased with the school. Before we signed up, we got a tour of the school, some free individual lessons on the basics, and could ask all the questions we wanted. The classes are held at convenient times and you can pick the schedule that's right for your family. Classes for different levels of students are held concurrently in the studio, which at first struck me as being very distracting for small kids. But the benefit is that they can see what working hard to get to the next level will bring, and also learn to tune out the other noise when it is time to focus on their teacher. The other benefit is that the room is full of teachers, some of whom circulate from class to class. These teachers will pull out a child who isn't getting the hang of it and give them one-on-one attention, or help with a child who is disrupting the class (which doesn't happen often). There are also classes for adults, so you can take a class at the same time as your child. The small ones also see that kung fu is for all ages and that even adults have to work hard to learn the skills. Classes almost always start on time and are well-organized and executed. The teachers work to not only command respect, but make the classes interesting and challenging for the kids. The fees are very reasonable and slightly lower than a couple of the other places I looked at. You can pay month-to-month, but if you sign up for a whole year, you get a 10% discount and a free uniform (which is a T-shirt and loose fitting pants). You can buy shoes there for about $12 if you choose. There is a charge for testing when your child is ready to move up to the next level, but that is standard. In sum, I highly recommend this school. The only downside is that parking is tight, but I have always gotten a spot even if I had to wait around for someone else to leave at times. more
