Aqua Dive Services supply underwater evaluations and support for floating homes--a necessary resource for those of us living on the water. James and his crew do a great job of assessing any problems, arriving quickly in an emergency and doing reliable work. This unique trade is so important to a small number of home (!) owners. It is great to have such a good group to call on.

Louisa's has great food, especially for breakfast! The bakery goods are delicious, ample and can be served warm. The cinnamon buns are incredible and difficult to refuse. They make great hot cereals, quiches and to-order egg dishes. The atmosphere is homey and friendly. The walls often feature local artist's creations. The staff, especially owners Luise and Michael, are very friendly and helpful.
The cookies, especially the bar cookies are also very special. I have often bought a variety of the brownies, Nanimo lemon bars, cut them in quarters and served them to company. Of course, if I am honest, I have to confess I did not make them! Try it. You will return to Louisa's.

Global Partnerships is a Seattle-based nonprofit that supports groups in Central America who are working to eliminate poverty in their countries. As part of educating people about the issues, Global Partnerships offers tours to the countries they serve--Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala. This fall, the tour is to Guatemala.
I traveled to Honduras in April 2005. We visited several villages and met the people, mostly women, who are receiving small grants to start or improve their local businesses. We also met their families, members of the community, government officials and those running the local lending organization. I learned so much about Honduras and how the issues of poverty are being addressed. I also had an opportunity to see some of the tourist sights. When I returned home, I felt I had really seen a country from all sides and met some wonderful people along the way. The Global Partnerships team were terrific. Well organized, they offered many options for us in the planning process and in Honduras. We all had a great time, felt very well cared for and came away with a new understanding of Central America and its people.

Paint the Town is a wonderful ceramics painting studio located in University Village. You choose which ceramic item you wish to paint--plate, mug, platter, bowl, etc. Then following the helpful instructions from the friendly staff, you draw or copy a great design, find the colors you want to use and proceed to paint. You leave the finished piece to be fired. You will be told when to return to pick it up! Each ceramic style is priced and you are also charged by the hour for the time you paint--Seniors paint for half price on Wednesdays! It helps to plan ahead and have some idea of what you want to make, though the owner and staff members are very helpful and have suggestions. This is a great project for groups of young people--come together and each paint something for mom! You will want to return, it is such fun.

The FriendShop is located on the third floor of the new and exciting downtown Seattle Public Library. The building is worth a visit and tour (ask at the information desk) but the gift shop is a REAL find! The space is filled with special items that are related to reading and books and travel and fun! Of course, postcards, books, pens and T-shirts and many other items feature the new library. But there are many other treasures such as jewelry, some made from typewriter keys, and the infamous Nancy Pearl Action figure! The shop specializes in items made by local crafts persons that you will find nowhere else. The FriendShop is staffed mostly by volunteers and the shop's proceeds support the special programs of the library. Stop by! You will come back again and again...the stock keeps changing.

This is the second of the Seattle Blue C Sushi restaurants. Located in the SW corner of University Village, it is sleek and modern. One sits in a booth or at the counter and chooses which of the many fresh items you wist to try. They move along in front of you on a conveyor belt, each with a label telling what it is. Prices are determined by the color of the plate rim, which corresponds to one of the colors of the various subway lines in Tokyo! You decide how much you want to eat AND how much you want to spend. Take-out is easy. Grab a box at the desk and pick what you want. A wait person will tally your bill. Pay and off you go. Fun place for a quick, healthy meal.

This funky eating spot is worth the trip. Located on the Olympic Peninsula at 21 North Water St. in PORT HADLOCK, it is a converted frame house filled with hand painted chairs and decorated with hundreds of hats of all kinds from cowboy and Hawaiian hats to going-to-church hats to bunny ears to pirate hats with stringy black hair. Anything goes. It is recommended that you change hats with each course and I suggest you have lots of courses. The food is great and plentiful. Crab cakes are fabulous. The seafood stew was the best I have ever had with lots of shell fish, salmon, shrimp, calamari and white fish in a delicious, lick-the-bowl sauce. The chocolate cheese cake put us in heaven! The place is noisy, but everyone is having a great time, dodging guests as the get up to try on another hat! It is across the street from the Sound. Lovely.

This lively place often has a line for a table, but it is well worth the wait. The food is fresh, plentiful, inventive and good! Drinks are imaginative and delicious. You can eat inside or on the deck overlooking Portage Bay. You can also do take out and eat on the steps or picnic tables next to the restaurant. Or better yet, do take out and rent a kayak at the dock below and eat on the water!

This restaurant has been a favorite of mine since it opened with only 6 or 8 tables. Now expanded, it still serves the best home-made pasta in the city, especially the ravioli. They melt in your mouth! The oven baked pizzas are also splendid. The service is good, the wait staff friendly and the desserts wonderful. They have a good wine list.
