Hobees is a chain of restaurants in the Bay Area--and if the others are anything like the one in Mountain View I can see why they have managed to not only stay in business, but to expand since 1974. In fact, this Hobees in Mountain View was the first one--the mother ship that sits proudly at the corner of Central Expressway and Rengstorff Ave..
Hobees has a wonderful California/American menu with many vegetarian items. My husband and I went there for breakfast recently --this is the meal they are really famous for--and he had the Banana Streusel French Toast Sandwich --which I had a nibble of--to die for! It is made with two extra-thick slices of orange swirl French toast filled with bananas sauteed in butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. Topped with toasted almonds and served with Strawberry-Yogurt sauce.--only $7.95! All of their prices are modest in my book.
I had the Hi Hat Hashbrowns--hash browns topped with diced ham and Jack and Cheddar cheese ($6.95). Yum! And since I avoid dairy, I brought my own goat milk cheddar cheese which they were happy to substitute. These folks are really willing to go out of their way for the customer with special dietary needs. They even had soy milk for my coffee--and real maple syrup for sweetener!
They are open 7 days a week and serve a wide variety of delicious dishes. I highly recommend this place for either breakfast or lunch (but don't come for dinner... because they don't serve it!). Maybe try the breakfast some Sunday, but know that. they close at 2:30 daily--so don't sleep too late!

This is a small friendly repair shop that works on everything under the sun. They are located at the end of Castro St. near the Cal Train station--kind of in the parking lot behind the stores that front on Castro St.
The guys there are the best. Mark Downey is the manager and is always willing to go a little out of his way to accommodate. And Derek Bros, the red-haired kid, is a whiz at fixing anything--plus is willing to be late to his advanced automotives class to take care of you.
They do free brake inspections--and I do mean free! They had to slave over my rusted rear brake drums and it took a long time. They finally got it off and everything was fine inside--but there was no grumbling or attitude. They didnt charge me anything and were still friendly!
Their prices are not cheap--$91.50/hr--but they charge for fractions of an hour. I have always gotten good service here and feel like it was worth the money because they are so honest and are willing to go the extra mile for you and not charge you for every inch of it!

Country Sun Health Food store is located in Palo Alto on California Avenue, and they are an old hippy style place gone modern. It is frequented by many of the faculty and students of Stanford Univ. This store still has a social conscience and gives senior discounts on Sundays and Wednesdays. This is a larger version of Bumblebee Foods. more of everything and they have a small organic produce department as well. They have a huge vitamin section and a couple of the staff are very knowledgeable--and a couple aren’t. Look for the older ladies. Wisdom comes with age! Again most all of their staff is very friendly and helpful. their prices are a little high--but not too bad. They have goat milk cheeses here also with better prices than Bumblebee. Parking can be a bit of a problem, but usually I can find a spot in the parking garage behind the store.

Piazza’s groceries on Middlefield Street in Palo Alto is an excellent choice for an in-between size grocery store with lots of personal service. I LOVE Marissa in the health and beauty aid department. We always get talking about health and travel when I come in. We are both fans of Glastonbury in England--home of the Chalice Well whose waters are famous for healing. This store also has an excellent meat and fish dept. Many health food and organic items can be found through the store--including organic meats. The produce department is large and luscious looking. This store even carries dried goat-milk powder--one of the rare items I have come to depend on since I gave up cow’s milk for health. They sell it cheaper here than any other store in the area. Again--everyone is very friendly and the lines are short--unlike Albertson’s and Safeway usually. The customers are a little snooty and rude sometimes, being an upscale kind of place I guess, and the prices are high for most things, but still, this is a very good place to shop.

This is a very nice health food store--albeit small. Bumble Bee Health Foods is on Escuela Ave. in Mountain View. They have most of the usual health food store items--but no produce. Very friendly service. They are VERY knowledgeable about vitamins and health foods and health in general, and the owners are IN the store--and are very nice. They have the hard-to-find stuff like Tofutti Sour Supreme--a soy sour cream substitute that tastes as good as the real thing. Their prices are a little high, but I like to patronize them often just because I believe in supporting small businesses, and this is an excellent store.

Mi Pueblo grocery store on Rengstorff St. is great for low prices on produce and meat. It has almost as large an array as the Milk Pail--including some unusual Mexican items, but nothing organic and the shelves are loaded with sugary items. The meat department, however, is excellent--with a staff of very energetic, friendly and upbeat young men to serve you--no waiting--and the floor show is great! The whole atmosphere is very party like with gay Mexican music playing and happy faces all around. A pleasure to walk into. In fact, when I am depressed I go in there just for a lift of spirits!

If you love cheese, the very best place in Mountain View to buy it is at the MIlk Pail, on California St. near San Antonio Ave. They have an unbelievable array of every sort imaginable--including many sheep or goat or buffalo cheeses. They also have some grains, seeds and nuts in bulk and a large produce department with low prices and the freshest fruits and vegetables around. They also have Uncle Eddie’s free range eggs for only $2.55/doz. Nice deep yellow yolks. I love the old world street market atmosphere at this store too--although if you don’t like being bumped and jostled a bit, this is not your place. The aisles are tiny!

Trader Joe’s grocery store in the San Antonio Mall is great for specialty foods and some organic or health food kinds of items. They have a very good selection of cheeses, but hardly any produce. Big selection of wines. Parking can be a problem here as well, and the service, while adequate does not have the ring of true fiendliness that Mi Casa or Bumblebee or Piazza’s. Their porices are prety good on the items they have--but they do not have a lot of what I am usually looking for.

Albertson’s is the other major grocery store and it does not have much in the way of organic items, but what it does have which can be a lifesaver if you are super busy or laid up, is HOME DELIVERY! It costs only $9.95 flat rate, no matter how much or how little you buy. You order on line at Albertsons.com and, if you do it before 8 a.m., you get your delivery that day. After 8 am. you get it the next day. Just pay by credit card on-line. Super service to my mind!

My favorite grocery store in Mountain View for basic items is Safeway--of which there are three locations, on California St., Shoreline Blvd., and MIramonte Ave. I usually shop the California Ave. one, but the other two are nice also. These stores carry a large line of organic foods--not in one section of the store, but throughout the store. You can recognize the organic products by the bright primary colored boxes with the big letter “O” on them for organic. They also have a pretty good selection of organic produce there. I always buy their butter because it is organic and it it costs less than anyplace else--$4.97. Did you know that regular butter is one of the worst foods you can eat in terms of chemical residues? Apples and raisins are close seconds and thirds. I always buy these organic--also my green leafy veggies. I can’t afford to buy everything organic, so I pick the most important items that are most heavily sprayed or contaminated in the regular form. Another good buy is their organic soy milk in boxes--only $1.49 yesterday.
